Prayer for the Punishment of the Wicked.

For the music director; set to [a]Al-tashheth. A [b]Mikhtam of David.

58 Do you indeed [c]speak righteousness, you [d]gods?
Do you (A)judge [e]fairly, you sons of mankind?
No, in heart you (B)practice injustice;
On earth you (C)clear a way for the violence of your hands.
The wicked have turned away (D)from the womb;
These who speak lies (E)go astray from [f]birth.
They have venom like the (F)venom of a serpent;
Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear,
So that it (G)does not hear the voice of [g](H)charmers,
Or a skillful caster of spells.

God, (I)shatter their teeth in their mouth;
Break out the fangs of the young lions, Lord.
May they (J)flow away like water that runs off;
When he [h](K)aims his arrows, may they be as [i]headless shafts.
May they be like a snail which goes along in slime,
Like the (L)miscarriage of a woman that never sees the sun.
Before your (M)pots can feel the fire of thorns
He will (N)sweep them away with a whirlwind, the [j]green and the burning alike.

10 The (O)righteous will rejoice when he (P)sees vengeance;
He will (Q)wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 And people will say, “There certainly is [k](R)a reward for the righteous;
There certainly is a God who (S)judges on the earth!”

Prayer for Rescue from Enemies.

For the music director; set to [l]Al-tashheth. A [m]Mikhtam of David, [n]when Saul sent men and they watched the house in order to kill him.

59 (T)Rescue me from my enemies, my God;
[o](U)Set me securely on high away from those who rise up against me.
Rescue me from (V)those who practice injustice,
And save me from (W)men of bloodshed.
For behold, they (X)have [p]set an ambush for my [q]life;
[r]Fierce men (Y)attack me,
(Z)Not for my wrongdoing nor for my sin, Lord,
[s](AA)For no guilt of mine, they run and take their stand against me.
(AB)Stir Yourself to [t]help me, and see!
You, (AC)Lord God of armies, the God of Israel,
Awake to [u](AD)punish all the nations;
(AE)Do not be gracious to any who deal treacherously in wrongdoing. Selah
They (AF)return at evening, they howl like a (AG)dog,
And prowl around the city.
Behold, they (AH)gush forth with their mouths;
(AI)Swords are in their lips,
For, they say, “(AJ)Who hears?”
But You, Lord, (AK)laugh at them;
You (AL)scoff at all the nations.

Because of [v]his (AM)strength I will watch for You,
For God is my (AN)refuge.
10 [w]My God (AO)in His faithfulness will meet me;
God will let me (AP)look triumphantly upon my enemies.
11 Do not kill them, (AQ)or my people will forget;
[x](AR)Scatter them by Your power and bring them down,
Lord, (AS)our shield.
12 [y]On account of the (AT)sin of their mouths and the words of their lips,
May they even be (AU)caught in their pride,
And on account of (AV)curses and lies which they tell.
13 [z](AW)Destroy them in wrath, [aa]destroy them so that they will no longer exist;
So that people may (AX)know that God [ab]rules in Jacob,
To the ends of the earth. Selah
14 They (AY)return at evening, they howl like a dog,
And prowl around the city.
15 They (AZ)wander about [ac]for food
And [ad]murmur if they are not satisfied.

16 But as for me, I will (BA)sing of Your strength;
Yes, I will (BB)joyfully sing of Your faithfulness in the (BC)morning,
For You have been my (BD)refuge
And a (BE)place of refuge on the day of my distress.
17 (BF)My strength, I will sing praises to You;
For God is my (BG)refuge, the [ae]God who shows me favor.

Grieving over Defeat in Battle, and Prayer for Help.

For the music director; according to [af]Shushan Eduth. A [ag]Mikhtam of David, to teach; [ah]when he fought with Aram-naharaim and Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and killed twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

60 God, (BH)You have rejected us. You have [ai](BI)broken us;
You have been (BJ)angry; (BK)restore us!
You have made the [aj](BL)land quake, You have split it open;
(BM)Heal its cracks, for it sways.
You have [ak](BN)made Your people experience hardship;
You have given us [al]wine to (BO)drink that makes us stagger.
You have given a (BP)banner to those who fear You,
That it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah
(BQ)That Your (BR)beloved may be rescued,
(BS)Save us with Your right hand, and answer [am]us!

God has spoken in His [an](BT)holiness:
“I will triumph, I will divide up (BU)Shechem, and measure out the Valley of (BV)Succoth.
(BW)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
(BX)Ephraim also is the [ao]helmet of My head;
Judah is My (BY)scepter.
(BZ)Moab is My washbowl;
I will throw My sandal over (CA)Edom;
Shout loud, (CB)Philistia, because of Me!”

Who will bring me into the besieged city?
Who [ap]will lead me to Edom?
10 Have You Yourself not (CC)rejected us, God?
And (CD)will You not go out with our armies, God?
11 Oh give us help against the enemy,
For (CE)rescue [aq]by man is worthless.
12 [ar]Through God we will (CF)do valiantly,
And it is He who will (CG)trample down our enemies.

Confidence in God’s Protection.

For the music director; on a stringed instrument. A Psalm of David.

61 (CH)Hear my cry, God;
(CI)Give Your attention to my prayer.
From the (CJ)end of the earth I call to You when my heart is (CK)faint;
Lead me to (CL)the rock that is higher than I.
For You have been a (CM)refuge for me,
A (CN)tower of strength against the enemy.
Let me [as](CO)dwell in Your tent forever;
Let me (CP)take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Selah

For You have heard my (CQ)vows, God;
You have given me the inheritance of those who (CR)fear Your name.
You will [at](CS)prolong the king’s [au]life;
His years will be like generations.
He will [av]sit enthroned (CT)before God forever;
Appoint (CU)faithfulness and truth that they may watch over him.
So I will (CV)sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may (CW)pay my vows day by day.

God Alone a Refuge from Treachery and Oppression.

For the music director; [aw]according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

62 (CX)My soul waits in silence for God alone;
From Him (CY)comes my salvation.
He alone is my (CZ)rock and my salvation,
My (DA)stronghold; I will not be greatly shaken.

How long will you attack a man,
That you may murder him, all of you,
Like a (DB)leaning wall, like a tottering fence?
They have planned only to thrust him down from his high position;
They (DC)delight in falsehood;
They (DD)bless with [ax]their mouth,
But inwardly they curse. Selah

My soul, (DE)wait in silence for God alone,
For my hope is from Him.
He alone is (DF)my rock and my salvation,
My refuge; I will not be shaken.
My (DG)salvation and my glory rest on God;
The rock of my strength, my (DH)refuge is in God.
(DI)Trust in Him at all times, you people;
(DJ)Pour out your hearts before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah

People of (DK)low standing are only (DL)breath, and people of rank are a (DM)lie;
In the (DN)balances they go up.
Together they are lighter than breath.
10 (DO)Do not trust in oppression,
And do not vainly rely on (DP)robbery;
If wealth increases, (DQ)do not set your heart on it.

11 God has (DR)spoken [ay]once;
[az]Twice I have heard this:
That (DS)power belongs to God;
12 And faithfulness (DT)is Yours, Lord,
For You (DU)reward a person according to his work.

The Thirsting Soul Satisfied in God.

A Psalm of David, [ba]when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

63 God, (DV)You are my God; I shall be watching for You;
My soul (DW)thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You,
In a (DX)dry and exhausted land where there is no water.
So have I (DY)seen You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and glory.
Because Your [bb](DZ)favor is better than life,
My lips will praise You.
So I will bless You (EA)as long as I live;
I will (EB)lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul is (EC)satisfied as with fat and fatness,
And my mouth offers (ED)praises with joyful lips.

When I remember You (EE)on my bed,
I meditate on You in the (EF)night watches,
For (EG)You have been my help,
And in the (EH)shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
My soul (EI)clings [bc]to You;
Your (EJ)right hand takes hold of me.

But those who (EK)seek my [bd]life to destroy it,
Will go into the [be](EL)depths of the earth.
10 [bf]They will be [bg](EM)turned over to the power of the sword;
They will be a [bh](EN)prey for foxes.
11 But the (EO)king will rejoice in God;
Everyone who (EP)swears by Him will boast,
For the (EQ)mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped.

Prayer for Rescue from Secret Enemies.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

64 Hear my voice, God, in (ER)my [bi]complaint;
(ES)Protect my life from dread of the enemy.
Hide me from the (ET)secret discussion of evildoers,
From the restlessness of (EU)the workers of injustice,
Who (EV)have sharpened their tongues like a sword.
They (EW)aimed bitter speech as their arrows,
To (EX)shoot [bj]from concealment at the innocent;
Suddenly they shoot at him, and (EY)do not fear.
They make firm for themselves an evil [bk]purpose;
They [bl]talk of (EZ)setting snares secretly;
They say, “(FA)Who can see them?”
They [bm]devise injustices, saying,
“We are [bn]ready with a well-conceived plot”;
For the [bo](FB)inward thought and the heart of a person are [bp]deep.

But (FC)God [bq]will shoot an arrow at them;
Suddenly [br]they will be wounded.
So [bs]they [bt]will (FD)make him stumble;
(FE)Their own tongue is against them;
All who see them will (FF)shake their heads.
Then all people [bu]will (FG)fear,
And they [bv]will (FH)declare the work of God,
And [bw]will consider [bx]what He has done.
10 The righteous person will be (FI)glad in the Lord and (FJ)take refuge in Him;
And all the upright in heart will boast.

God’s Abundant Favor to Earth and Mankind.

For the music director. A Psalm of David. A Song.

65 There will be silence [by]before You, and praise in Zion, God,
And the (FK)vow will be fulfilled for You.
You who hear prayer,
To You (FL)all [bz]mankind comes.
[ca](FM)Wrongdoings prevail against me;
As for our offenses, You [cb](FN)forgive them.
(FO)Blessed is the one You (FP)choose and allow to approach You;
He will dwell in Your courtyards.
We will be (FQ)satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
Your holy temple.

By (FR)awesome deeds You answer us in righteousness, (FS)God of our salvation,
You who are the trust of all the (FT)ends of the earth and the farthest [cc](FU)sea;
Who (FV)establishes the mountains by His strength,
Who is (FW)encircled with might;
Who (FX)stills the roaring of the seas,
The roaring of their waves,
And the (FY)turmoil of the nations.
They who dwell at the (FZ)ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs;
You make the [cd]sunrise and the sunset shout for joy.

You visit the earth and (GA)cause it to overflow;
You greatly (GB)enrich it;
The [ce](GC)stream of God is full of water;
You prepare their (GD)grain, for so You prepare [cf]the earth.
10 You water its furrows abundantly,
You [cg]settle its ridges,
You soften it (GE)with showers,
You bless its growth.
11 You have crowned the year [ch]with Your (GF)goodness,
And Your [ci]paths (GG)drip with fatness.
12 (GH)The pastures of the wilderness drip,
And the (GI)hills encircle themselves with rejoicing.
13 The meadows are (GJ)clothed with flocks
And the valleys are (GK)covered with grain;
They (GL)shout for joy, yes, they sing.

Psalm 58[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[b]

Do you rulers indeed speak justly?(A)
    Do you judge people with equity?
No, in your heart you devise injustice,(B)
    and your hands mete out violence on the earth.(C)

Even from birth the wicked go astray;
    from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
Their venom is like the venom of a snake,(D)
    like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
that will not heed(E) the tune of the charmer,(F)
    however skillful the enchanter may be.

Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;(G)
    Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!(H)
Let them vanish like water that flows away;(I)
    when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.(J)
May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along,(K)
    like a stillborn child(L) that never sees the sun.

Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns(M)
    whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away.[c](N)
10 The righteous will be glad(O) when they are avenged,(P)
    when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.(Q)
11 Then people will say,
    “Surely the righteous still are rewarded;(R)
    surely there is a God who judges the earth.”(S)

Psalm 59[d]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[e] When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house(T) in order to kill him.

Deliver me from my enemies, O God;(U)
    be my fortress against those who are attacking me.(V)
Deliver me from evildoers(W)
    and save me from those who are after my blood.(X)

See how they lie in wait for me!
    Fierce men conspire(Y) against me
    for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
I have done no wrong,(Z) yet they are ready to attack me.(AA)
    Arise to help me; look on my plight!(AB)
You, Lord God Almighty,
    you who are the God of Israel,(AC)
rouse yourself(AD) to punish all the nations;(AE)
    show no mercy to wicked traitors.[f](AF)

They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,(AG)
    and prowl about the city.
See what they spew from their mouths(AH)
    the words from their lips are sharp as swords,(AI)
    and they think, “Who can hear us?”(AJ)
But you laugh at them, Lord;(AK)
    you scoff at all those nations.(AL)

You are my strength,(AM) I watch for you;
    you, God, are my fortress,(AN)
10     my God on whom I can rely.

God will go before me
    and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,[g](AO)
    or my people will forget.(AP)
In your might uproot them
    and bring them down.(AQ)
12 For the sins of their mouths,(AR)
    for the words of their lips,(AS)
    let them be caught in their pride.(AT)
For the curses and lies they utter,
13     consume them in your wrath,
    consume them till they are no more.(AU)
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
    that God rules over Jacob.(AV)

14 They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
15 They wander about for food(AW)
    and howl if not satisfied.
16 But I will sing(AX) of your strength,(AY)
    in the morning(AZ) I will sing of your love;(BA)
for you are my fortress,(BB)
    my refuge in times of trouble.(BC)

17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
    my God on whom I can rely.(BD)

Psalm 60[h](BE)

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A miktam[i] of David. For teaching. When he fought Aram Naharaim[j] and Aram Zobah,[k] and when Joab returned and struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.(BF)

You have rejected us,(BG) God, and burst upon us;
    you have been angry(BH)—now restore us!(BI)
You have shaken the land(BJ) and torn it open;
    mend its fractures,(BK) for it is quaking.
You have shown your people desperate times;(BL)
    you have given us wine that makes us stagger.(BM)
But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner(BN)
    to be unfurled against the bow.[l]

Save us and help us with your right hand,(BO)
    that those you love(BP) may be delivered.
God has spoken from his sanctuary:
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem(BQ)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.(BR)
Gilead(BS) is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim(BT) is my helmet,
    Judah(BU) is my scepter.(BV)
Moab is my washbasin,
    on Edom I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.(BW)

Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
10 Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?(BX)
11 Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.(BY)
12 With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down our enemies.(BZ)

Psalm 61[m]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. Of David.

Hear my cry, O God;(CA)
    listen to my prayer.(CB)

From the ends of the earth I call to you,
    I call as my heart grows faint;(CC)
    lead me to the rock(CD) that is higher than I.
For you have been my refuge,(CE)
    a strong tower against the foe.(CF)

I long to dwell(CG) in your tent forever
    and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.[n](CH)
For you, God, have heard my vows;(CI)
    you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.(CJ)

Increase the days of the king’s life,(CK)
    his years for many generations.(CL)
May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever;(CM)
    appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.(CN)

Then I will ever sing in praise of your name(CO)
    and fulfill my vows day after day.(CP)

Psalm 62[o]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

Truly my soul finds rest(CQ) in God;(CR)
    my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock(CS) and my salvation;(CT)
    he is my fortress,(CU) I will never be shaken.(CV)

How long will you assault me?
    Would all of you throw me down—
    this leaning wall,(CW) this tottering fence?
Surely they intend to topple me
    from my lofty place;
    they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
    but in their hearts they curse.[p](CX)

Yes, my soul, find rest in God;(CY)
    my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God[q];
    he is my mighty rock, my refuge.(CZ)
Trust in him at all times, you people;(DA)
    pour out your hearts to him,(DB)
    for God is our refuge.

Surely the lowborn(DC) are but a breath,(DD)
    the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance,(DE) they are nothing;
    together they are only a breath.
10 Do not trust in extortion(DF)
    or put vain hope in stolen goods;(DG)
though your riches increase,
    do not set your heart on them.(DH)

11 One thing God has spoken,
    two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,(DI)
12     and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”;(DJ)
and, “You reward everyone
    according to what they have done.”(DK)

Psalm 63[r]

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,(DL)
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.(DM)

I have seen you in the sanctuary(DN)
    and beheld your power and your glory.(DO)
Because your love is better than life,(DP)
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,(DQ)
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.(DR)
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;(DS)
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.(DT)
Because you are my help,(DU)
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.(DV)
I cling to you;(DW)
    your right hand upholds me.(DX)

Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;(DY)
    they will go down to the depths of the earth.(DZ)
10 They will be given over to the sword(EA)
    and become food for jackals.(EB)

11 But the king will rejoice in God;
    all who swear by God will glory in him,(EC)
    while the mouths of liars will be silenced.(ED)

Psalm 64[s]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint;(EE)
    protect my life from the threat of the enemy.(EF)

Hide me from the conspiracy(EG) of the wicked,(EH)
    from the plots of evildoers.
They sharpen their tongues like swords(EI)
    and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.(EJ)
They shoot from ambush at the innocent;(EK)
    they shoot suddenly, without fear.(EL)

They encourage each other in evil plans,
