Psalm 27:7-14

⁷^(A)Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;
    be gracious to me and answer me!
⁸You have said, ^(B)“Seek^[a] my face.”
My heart says to you,
    “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”^[b]
⁹    ^(C)Hide not your face from me.
Turn not your servant away in anger,
    O you who have been my help.
Cast me not off; forsake me not,
    ^(D)O God of my salvation!
¹⁰For ^(E)my father and my mother have forsaken me,
    but the Lord will ^(F)take me in.

¹¹^(G)Teach me your way, O Lord,
    and lead me on ^(H)a level path
    because of my enemies.
¹²^(I)Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;
    for ^(J)false witnesses have risen against me,
    and they ^(K)breathe out violence.

¹³I believe that I shall look^[c] upon ^(L)the goodness of the Lord
    in ^(M)the land of the living!
¹⁴^(N)Wait for the Lord;
    ^(O)be strong, and let your heart take courage;
    wait for the Lord!

The Call of Gideon

¹¹Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash ^(A)the Abiezrite, while his son ^(B)Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. ¹²And ^(C)the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, ^(D)“The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” ¹³And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are ^(E)all his wonderful deeds ^(F)that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” ¹⁴And the Lord^[a] turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; ^(G)do not I send you?” ¹⁵And he said to him, ^(H)“Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, ^(I)my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.” ¹⁶And the Lord said to him, ^(J)“But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” ¹⁷And he said to him, ^(K)“If now I have found favor in your eyes, then ^(L)show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. ¹⁸Please ^(M)do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.”

¹⁹So Gideon went into his house ^(N)and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes from an ephah^[b] of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them. ²⁰And the angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them ^(O)on this rock, and ^(P)pour the broth over them.” And he did so. ²¹Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes. ^(Q)And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. ²²Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the Lord. And Gideon said, ^(R)“Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.” ²³But the Lord said to him, ^(S)“Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.” ²⁴Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, ^(T)The Lord Is Peace. To this day it still stands at ^(U)Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.

¹¹The angel of the Lord^(A) came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah^(B) that belonged to Joash^(C) the Abiezrite,^(D) where his son Gideon^(E) was threshing^(F) wheat in a winepress^(G) to keep it from the Midianites. ¹²When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you,^(H) mighty warrior.^(I)”

¹³“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders^(J) that our ancestors told^(K) us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned^(L) us and given us into the hand of Midian.”

¹⁴The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have^(M) and save^(N) Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?”

¹⁵“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan^(O) is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.^(P)”

¹⁶The Lord answered, “I will be with you^(Q), and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.”

¹⁷Gideon replied, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign^(R) that it is really you talking to me. ¹⁸Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you.”

And the Lord said, “I will wait until you return.”

¹⁹Gideon went inside, prepared a young goat,^(S) and from an ephah^[a]^(T) of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak.^(U)

²⁰The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock,^(V) and pour out the broth.” And Gideon did so. ²¹Then the angel of the Lord touched the meat and the unleavened bread^(W) with the tip of the staff^(X) that was in his hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. ²²When Gideon realized^(Y) that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”^(Z)

²³But the Lord said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid.^(AA) You are not going to die.”^(AB)

²⁴So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called^(AC) it The Lord Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah^(AD) of the Abiezrites.
