(A)And on that day (B)I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

Him Whom They Have Pierced

10 “And (C)I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and (D)pleas for mercy, so that, (E)when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, (F)they shall mourn for him, (G)as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. 11 (H)On that day (I)the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great (J)as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 The land shall mourn, (K)each family[a] by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of (L)Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of (M)the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14 and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves.

13 (N)“On that day there shall be (O)a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.

Idolatry Cut Off

“And (P)on that day, declares the Lord of hosts, (Q)I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, so that (R)they shall be remembered no more. And also (S)I will remove from the land the prophets and the spirit of uncleanness. And if anyone again prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, (T)‘You shall not live, for you speak lies in the name of the Lord.’ And his father and mother who bore him shall pierce him through when he prophesies.

“On that day (U)every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies. He will not put on a hairy cloak in order to deceive, but he will say, (V)‘I am no prophet, I am a worker of the soil, for a man sold me in my youth.’[b] And if one asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your back?’[c] he will say, ‘The wounds I received in the house of my friends.’

The Shepherd Struck

“Awake, O sword, against (W)my shepherd,
    against the man who stands next to me,”
declares the Lord of hosts.

(X)“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;
    I will turn my hand against the little ones.
In the whole land, declares the Lord,
    two thirds shall be cut off and perish,
    (Y)and one third shall be left alive.
And (Z)I will put this third into the fire,
    and refine them as one refines silver,
    and test them as gold is tested.
(AA)They will call upon my name,
    and (AB)I will answer them.
(AC)I will say, ‘They are my people’;
    and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”

On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations(A) that attack Jerusalem.(B)

Mourning for the One They Pierced

10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit[a](C) of grace and supplication.(D) They will look on[b] me, the one they have pierced,(E) and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,(F) and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.(G) 11 On that day the weeping(H) in Jerusalem will be as great as the weeping of Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.(I) 12 The land will mourn,(J) each clan by itself, with their wives by themselves: the clan of the house of David and their wives, the clan of the house of Nathan and their wives, 13 the clan of the house of Levi and their wives, the clan of Shimei and their wives, 14 and all the rest of the clans and their wives.(K)

Cleansing From Sin

13 “On that day a fountain(L) will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse(M) them from sin and impurity.

“On that day, I will banish the names of the idols(N) from the land, and they will be remembered no more,”(O) declares the Lord Almighty. “I will remove both the prophets(P) and the spirit of impurity from the land. And if anyone still prophesies, their father and mother, to whom they were born, will say to them, ‘You must die, because you have told lies(Q) in the Lord’s name.’ Then their own parents will stab the one who prophesies.(R)

“On that day every prophet will be ashamed(S) of their prophetic vision. They will not put on a prophet’s garment(T) of hair(U) in order to deceive.(V) Each will say, ‘I am not a prophet. I am a farmer; the land has been my livelihood since my youth.[c](W) If someone asks, ‘What are these wounds on your body[d]?’ they will answer, ‘The wounds I was given at the house of my friends.’

The Shepherd Struck, the Sheep Scattered

“Awake, sword,(X) against my shepherd,(Y)
    against the man who is close to me!”
    declares the Lord Almighty.
“Strike the shepherd,
    and the sheep will be scattered,(Z)
    and I will turn my hand against the little ones.
In the whole land,” declares the Lord,
    “two-thirds will be struck down and perish;
    yet one-third will be left in it.(AA)
This third I will put into the fire;(AB)
    I will refine them like silver(AC)
    and test them like gold.(AD)
They will call(AE) on my name(AF)
    and I will answer(AG) them;
I will say, ‘They are my people,’(AH)
    and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.(AI)’”
