You Will Not Abandon My Soul

A (A)Miktam[a] of David.

16 Preserve me, O God, for in you I (B)take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    (C)I have no good apart from you.”

As for (D)the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.[b]

The sorrows of those who run after[c] another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or (E)take their names on my lips.

The Lord is (F)my chosen portion and my (G)cup;
    you hold my (H)lot.
(I)The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the Lord who (J)gives me counsel;
    in (K)the night also my (L)heart instructs me.[d]
(M)I have (N)set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my (O)right hand, I shall not be (P)shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my (Q)whole being[e] rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to (R)Sheol,
    (S)or let your (T)holy one see (U)corruption.[f]

11 You make known to me (V)the path of life;
    in your presence there is (W)fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are (X)pleasures forevermore.

In the Shadow of Your Wings

A (Y)Prayer of David.

17 Hear a just cause, O Lord; (Z)attend to my cry!
    Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!
From your presence (AA)let my vindication come!
    Let your eyes behold the right!

You have (AB)tried my heart, you have (AC)visited me by (AD)night,
    you have (AE)tested me, and you will find nothing;
    I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.
With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips
    I have avoided the ways of the violent.
My steps have (AF)held fast to your paths;
    my feet have not slipped.

I (AG)call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
    (AH)incline your ear to me; hear my words.
(AI)Wondrously show[g] your steadfast love,
    O Savior of those who seek refuge
    from (AJ)their adversaries at your right hand.

Keep me as (AK)the apple of your eye;
    hide me in (AL)the shadow of your wings,
from the wicked who do me violence,
    my deadly enemies who (AM)surround me.

10 (AN)They close their hearts to pity;
    with their mouths they (AO)speak arrogantly.
11 They have now surrounded our (AP)steps;
    they set their eyes to (AQ)cast us to the ground.
12 He is like a lion eager to tear,
    as a young lion (AR)lurking in ambush.

13 Arise, O Lord! Confront him, subdue him!
    Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword,
14 from men by your hand, O Lord,
    from (AS)men of the world whose (AT)portion is in this life.[h]
You fill their womb with treasure;[i]
    they are satisfied with (AU)children,
    and they leave their abundance to their infants.

15 As for me, I shall (AV)behold your face in righteousness;
    when I (AW)awake, I shall be (AX)satisfied with your likeness.

The Lord Is My Rock and My Fortress

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, (AY)the servant of the Lord, (AZ)who addressed the words of this (BA)song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:

18 I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my (BB)rock and my (BC)fortress and my deliverer,
    my God, my (BD)rock, in (BE)whom I take refuge,
    my (BF)shield, and (BG)the horn of my salvation, my (BH)stronghold.
I call upon the Lord, who is (BI)worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.

(BJ)The cords of death encompassed me;
    (BK)the torrents of destruction assailed me;[j]
(BL)the cords of Sheol entangled me;
    the snares of death confronted me.

(BM)In my distress I called upon the Lord;
    to my God I cried for help.
From his (BN)temple he heard my voice,
    and my cry to him reached his ears.

Then the earth (BO)reeled and rocked;
    the foundations also of the mountains trembled
    and quaked, because he was angry.
Smoke went up from his nostrils,[k]
    and devouring (BP)fire from his mouth;
    glowing coals flamed forth from him.
He (BQ)bowed the heavens and (BR)came down;
    (BS)thick darkness was under his feet.
10 He rode on a cherub and flew;
    he came swiftly on (BT)the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his (BU)canopy around him,
    thick clouds (BV)dark with water.
12 Out of the brightness before him
    (BW)hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.

13 The Lord also (BX)thundered in the heavens,
    and the Most High uttered his (BY)voice,
    hailstones and coals of fire.
14 And he sent out his (BZ)arrows and scattered them;
    he flashed forth lightnings and (CA)routed them.
15 Then (CB)the channels of the sea were seen,
    and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your (CC)rebuke, O Lord,
    at the blast of (CD)the breath of your nostrils.

16 He (CE)sent from on high, he took me;
    he (CF)drew me out of (CG)many waters.
17 He rescued me from my strong enemy
    and from those who hated me,
    for they were (CH)too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into (CI)a broad place;
    he rescued me, because he (CJ)delighted in me.

20 The Lord dealt with me (CK)according to my righteousness;
    according to (CL)the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
21 For I have (CM)kept the ways of the Lord,
    and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For (CN)all his rules[l] were before me,
    and his statutes I did not put away from me.
23 I was (CO)blameless before him,
    and I kept myself from my guilt.
24 So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25 With (CP)the merciful you show yourself merciful;
    with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
26 with the purified you show yourself pure;
    and with (CQ)the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
27 For you save (CR)a humble people,
    but (CS)the haughty eyes you bring down.
28 For it is you who light my (CT)lamp;
    the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
29 For by you I can run against a troop,
    and by my God I can (CU)leap over (CV)a wall.
30 This God—his way is (CW)perfect;[m]
    the word of the Lord (CX)proves true;
    he is (CY)a shield for all those who (CZ)take refuge in him.

31 For (DA)who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is (DB)a rock, except our God?—
32 the God who (DC)equipped me with strength
    and made my way (DD)blameless.
33 He made my feet like the feet of a (DE)deer
    and set me secure on (DF)the heights.
34 He (DG)trains my hands for war,
    so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have given me the shield of your salvation,
    and your right hand (DH)supported me,
    and your (DI)gentleness made me great.
36 You (DJ)gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet did not slip.
37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them,
    and did not turn back till they were consumed.
38 I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise;
    they fell under my feet.
39 For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
    you made those who rise against me sink under me.
40 You made my enemies (DK)turn their backs to me,[n]
    and those who hated me I destroyed.
41 (DL)They cried for help, but there was none to save;
    they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
42 I beat them fine as (DM)dust before the wind;
    I cast them out like (DN)the mire of the streets.

43 You delivered me from (DO)strife with the people;
    you made me (DP)the head of the nations;
    (DQ)people whom I had not known served me.
44 As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me;
    (DR)foreigners (DS)came cringing to me.
45 (DT)Foreigners lost heart
    and (DU)came trembling out of their fortresses.

46 The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be the God of my salvation—
47 the God who gave me vengeance
    and (DV)subdued peoples under me,
48 who rescued me from my enemies;
    yes, you (DW)exalted me above those who rose against me;
    you delivered me from (DX)the man of violence.

49 (DY)For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and (DZ)sing to your name.
50 Great (EA)salvation he brings to his king,
    and shows steadfast love to his (EB)anointed,
    to (EC)David and his offspring forever.

The Law of the Lord Is Perfect

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

19 (ED)The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the sky above[o] proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
    and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
    whose voice is not heard.
(EE)Their (EF)voice[p] goes out through all the earth,
    and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for (EG)the sun,
    (EH)which comes out like (EI)a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
    and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
    and its circuit to the end of them,
    and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

(EJ)The law of the Lord is perfect,[q]
    (EK)reviving the soul;
(EL)the testimony of the Lord is (EM)sure,
    (EN)making wise (EO)the simple;
(EP)the precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is (EQ)pure,
    (ER)enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the Lord is clean,
    enduring forever;
the rules[r] of the Lord are (ES)true,
    and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than (ET)gold,
    even much (EU)fine gold;
(EV)sweeter also than honey
    and drippings of (EW)the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
    (EX)in keeping them there is great reward.

12 (EY)Who can discern his errors?
    (EZ)Declare me innocent from (FA)hidden faults.
13 (FB)Keep back your servant also from (FC)presumptuous sins;
    let them not have (FD)dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
    and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be acceptable in your sight,
    O Lord, my (FE)rock and my (FF)redeemer.

Trust in the Name of the Lord Our God

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

20 May the Lord (FG)answer you in the day of trouble!
    May (FH)the name of the God of Jacob (FI)protect you!
May he send you help from (FJ)the sanctuary
    and give you support from (FK)Zion!
May he (FL)remember all your offerings
    and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah

May he (FM)grant you your heart's desire
    and fulfill all your plans!
May we shout for joy over (FN)your salvation,
    and in the name of our God set up our (FO)banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!

Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed;
    he will answer him from his holy heaven
    with (FP)the saving might of his right hand.
Some trust in (FQ)chariots and some in (FR)horses,
    (FS)but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
They collapse and fall,
    but we rise and stand upright.

O Lord, save (FT)the king!
    May he answer us when we call.

The King Rejoices in the Lord's Strength

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

21 O Lord, in your (FU)strength the king rejoices,
    and in your (FV)salvation how greatly he exults!
You have (FW)given him his heart's desire
    and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
For you (FX)meet him with rich blessings;
    you set (FY)a crown of (FZ)fine gold upon his head.
He asked life of you; you (GA)gave it to him,
    (GB)length of days forever and ever.
His (GC)glory is great through your salvation;
    (GD)splendor and majesty you bestow on him.
For you make him most blessed forever;[s]
    you make him glad with the (GE)joy of your presence.
For the king trusts in the Lord,
    and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be (GF)moved.

Your hand will (GG)find out all your enemies;
    your right hand will find out those who hate you.
You will make them as (GH)a blazing oven
    when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his (GI)wrath,
    and (GJ)fire will consume them.
10 You (GK)will destroy their (GL)descendants from the earth,
    and their offspring from among the children of man.
11 Though they plan evil against you,
    though they (GM)devise mischief, they will not succeed.
12 For you will put them (GN)to flight;
    you will (GO)aim at their faces with your bows.

13 Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
    We will sing and praise your power.

Psalm 19[i]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The heavens(FR) declare(FS) the glory of God;(FT)
    the skies(FU) proclaim the work of his hands.(FV)
Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.(FW)
They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice[j] goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.(FX)
In the heavens God has pitched a tent(FY) for the sun.(FZ)
    It is like a bridegroom(GA) coming out of his chamber,(GB)
    like a champion(GC) rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens(GD)
    and makes its circuit to the other;(GE)
    nothing is deprived of its warmth.

The law of the Lord(GF) is perfect,(GG)
    refreshing the soul.(GH)
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,(GI)
    making wise the simple.(GJ)
The precepts of the Lord are right,(GK)
    giving joy(GL) to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.(GM)
The fear of the Lord(GN) is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
    and all of them are righteous.(GO)

10 They are more precious than gold,(GP)
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,(GQ)
    than honey from the honeycomb.(GR)
11 By them your servant is warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
    Forgive my hidden faults.(GS)
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;(GT)
    may they not rule over me.(GU)
Then I will be blameless,(GV)
    innocent of great transgression.

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
    be pleasing(GW) in your sight,
    Lord, my Rock(GX) and my Redeemer.(GY)

Psalm 20[k]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;(GZ)
    may the name of the God of Jacob(HA) protect you.(HB)
May he send you help(HC) from the sanctuary(HD)
    and grant you support(HE) from Zion.(HF)
May he remember(HG) all your sacrifices
    and accept your burnt offerings.[l](HH)
May he give you the desire of your heart(HI)
    and make all your plans succeed.(HJ)
May we shout for joy(HK) over your victory
    and lift up our banners(HL) in the name of our God.

May the Lord grant all your requests.(HM)

Now this I know:
    The Lord gives victory to his anointed.(HN)
He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary
    with the victorious power of his right hand.(HO)
Some trust in chariots(HP) and some in horses,(HQ)
    but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.(HR)
They are brought to their knees and fall,(HS)
    but we rise up(HT) and stand firm.(HU)
Lord, give victory to the king!
    Answer us(HV) when we call!

Psalm 21[m]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The king rejoices in your strength, Lord.(HW)
    How great is his joy in the victories you give!(HX)

You have granted him his heart’s desire(HY)
    and have not withheld the request of his lips.[n]
You came to greet him with rich blessings
    and placed a crown of pure gold(HZ) on his head.(IA)
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
    length of days, for ever and ever.(IB)
Through the victories(IC) you gave, his glory is great;
    you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.(ID)
Surely you have granted him unending blessings
    and made him glad with the joy(IE) of your presence.(IF)
For the king trusts in the Lord;(IG)
    through the unfailing love(IH) of the Most High(II)
    he will not be shaken.(IJ)

Your hand will lay hold(IK) on all your enemies;
    your right hand will seize your foes.
When you appear for battle,
    you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
    and his fire will consume them.(IL)
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
    their posterity from mankind.(IM)
11 Though they plot evil(IN) against you
    and devise wicked schemes,(IO) they cannot succeed.
12 You will make them turn their backs(IP)
    when you aim at them with drawn bow.

13 Be exalted(IQ) in your strength, Lord;(IR)
    we will sing and praise your might.
