Give Thanks to the Lord

138 (A)I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
before (B)the gods I sing your praise;
2 I bow down (C)toward your (D)holy temple
and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
your name and your word.[a]
3 On the day I called, you answered me;
my strength of soul you increased.[b]
4 (E)All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord,
for they have heard the words of your mouth,
5 and they shall sing of (F)the ways of the Lord,
for great is the glory of the Lord.
6 (G)For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,
but the haughty he knows from afar.
7 (H)Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you (I)preserve my life;
you (J)stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and your (K)right hand delivers me.
8 The Lord will (L)fulfill his purpose for me;
(M)your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake (N)the work of your hands.
Search Me, O God, and Know My Heart

139 O Lord, you have (O)searched me and known me!
2 You (P)know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you (Q)discern my thoughts from afar.
3 You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, (R)you know it altogether.
5 You (S)hem me in, behind and before,
and (T)lay your hand upon me.
6 (U)Such knowledge is (V)too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.
7 (W)Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where (X)shall I flee from your presence?
8 (Y)If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
(Z)If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
9 If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall (AA)lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, (AB)“Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 (AC)even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.
13 For you (AD)formed my inward parts;
you (AE)knitted me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.[c]
(AF)Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
15 (AG)My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in (AH)the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your (AI)book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.
17 How precious to me are your (AJ)thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 (AK)If I would count them, they are more than (AL)the sand.
I awake, and I am still with you.
19 Oh that you would (AM)slay the wicked, O God!
O (AN)men of blood, (AO)depart from me!
20 They (AP)speak against you with malicious intent;
your enemies (AQ)take your name in vain.[d]
21 (AR)Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?
And do I not (AS)loathe those who (AT)rise up against you?
22 I hate them with complete hatred;
I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!

140 (AX)Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men;
preserve me from (AY)violent men,
2 who plan evil things in their heart
and (AZ)stir up wars continually.
3 They make (BA)their tongue sharp as (BB)a serpent's,
and (BC)under their lips is the (BD)venom of asps. Selah
4 Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
preserve me from (BE)violent men,
who have planned to trip up my feet.
5 The arrogant have (BF)hidden a trap for me,
and with cords they have spread (BG)a net;[g]
beside the way they have set (BH)snares for me. Selah
6 (BI)I say to the Lord, You are my God;
give ear to (BJ)the voice of my pleas for mercy, O Lord!
7 O Lord, my Lord, (BK)the strength of my salvation,
you have covered my head in the day of battle.
8 (BL)Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked;
do not further their[h] evil plot, or (BM)they will be exalted! Selah
9 As for the head of those who surround me,
let (BN)the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!
10 Let (BO)burning coals fall upon them!
Let them be cast into fire,
into miry pits, no more to rise!
11 Let not the slanderer be established in the land;
let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!
12 I know that the Lord will (BP)maintain the cause of the afflicted,
and (BQ)will execute justice for the needy.
13 Surely (BR)the righteous shall give thanks to your name;
(BS)the upright shall dwell in your presence.
Give Ear to My Voice

141 O Lord, I call upon you; (BT)hasten to me!
Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
2 Let (BU)my prayer be counted as incense before you,
and (BV)the lifting up of my hands as (BW)the evening sacrifice!
3 (BX)Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
(BY)keep watch over the door of my lips!
4 (BZ)Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who (CA)work iniquity,
and (CB)let me not eat of their delicacies!
5 (CC)Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness;
let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head;
let my head not refuse it.
Yet (CD)my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.
6 When their judges are (CE)thrown over the cliff,[i]
then they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant.
7 As when one plows and breaks up the earth,
so shall our bones (CF)be scattered at the mouth of Sheol.[j]
8 But (CG)my eyes are toward you, O God, my Lord;
(CH)in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless![k]
9 Keep me from (CI)the trap that they have laid for me
and from the snares of evildoers!
10 Let the wicked (CJ)fall into their own nets,
while I pass by safely.

142 With my voice I (CL)cry out to the Lord;
with my voice I (CM)plead for mercy to the Lord.
2 I (CN)pour out my complaint before him;
I tell my trouble before him.

In the path where I walk
they have (CP)hidden a trap for me.

(CS)there is none who takes notice of me;
(CT)no refuge remains to me;
no one cares for my soul.

Deliver me from my persecutors,

3 For the enemy has pursued my soul;

my heart within me is appalled.

(EI)who trains my hands for war,
and my fingers for battle;

3 O Lord, (EO)what is man that you (EP)regard him,
or the son of man that you think of him?
4 (EQ)Man is like a breath;
his days are like (ER)a passing (ES)shadow.
5 (ET)Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down!
(EU)Touch the mountains so that they smoke!
6 (EV)Flash forth the lightning and scatter them;
(EW)send out your arrows and rout them!
7 (EX)Stretch out your hand from on high;
(EY)rescue me and deliver me from the many waters,
from the hand (EZ)of foreigners,

145 (FO)I will extol you, my God and (FP)King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you
(FQ)and praise your name forever and ever.
3 (FR)Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his (FS)greatness is unsearchable.
4 (FT)One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On (FU)the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 They shall speak of (FV)the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall pour forth the fame of your (FW)abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

1 I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;

for you have so exalted your solemn decree
that it surpasses your fame.(F)

protect me from the violent,(BP)
2 who devise evil plans(BQ) in their hearts
and stir up war(BR) every day.
3 They make their tongues as sharp as(BS) a serpent’s;
the poison of vipers(BT) is on their lips.[c]
4 Keep me safe,(BU) Lord, from the hands of the wicked;(BV)
protect me from the violent,
who devise ways to trip my feet.
5 The arrogant have hidden a snare(BW) for me;
they have spread out the cords of their net(BX)
and have set traps(BY) for me along my path.
6 I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”(BZ)

Psalm 141
A psalm of David.
1 I call to you, Lord, come quickly(CM) to me;
hear me(CN) when I call to you.
2 May my prayer be set before you like incense;(CO)
may the lifting up of my hands(CP) be like the evening sacrifice.(CQ)
3 Set a guard over my mouth,(CR) Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips.(CS)
4 Do not let my heart(CT) be drawn to what is evil
so that I take part in wicked deeds(CU)
along with those who are evildoers;
do not let me eat their delicacies.(CV)
5 Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness;
let him rebuke me(CW)—that is oil on my head.(CX)
My head will not refuse it,
for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.
6 Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs,(CY)
and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.
7 They will say, “As one plows(CZ) and breaks up the earth,(DA)
so our bones have been scattered at the mouth(DB) of the grave.”
8 But my eyes are fixed(DC) on you, Sovereign Lord;
in you I take refuge(DD)—do not give me over to death.
9 Keep me safe(DE) from the traps set by evildoers,(DF)

people have hidden a snare for me.

listen to my cry for mercy;(EC)

come to my relief.
2 Do not bring your servant into judgment,
for no one living is righteous(EF) before you.
3 The enemy pursues me,
he crushes me to the ground;
he makes me dwell in the darkness(EG)
like those long dead.(EH)
4 So my spirit grows faint within me;
my heart within me is dismayed.(EI)
5 I remember(EJ) the days of long ago;
I meditate(EK) on all your works
and consider what your hands have done.

1 Praise be to the Lord my Rock,(FE)
who trains my hands for war,
my fingers for battle.
2 He is my loving God and my fortress,(FF)

my shield,(FH) in whom I take refuge,
who subdues peoples[g](FI) under me.
3 Lord, what are human beings(FJ) that you care for them,
mere mortals that you think of them?
4 They are like a breath;(FK)
their days are like a fleeting shadow.(FL)
5 Part your heavens,(FM) Lord, and come down;(FN)
touch the mountains, so that they smoke.(FO)
6 Send forth lightning(FP) and scatter(FQ) the enemy;
shoot your arrows(FR) and rout them.

deliver me and rescue me(FT)
from the mighty waters,(FU)

12 Then our sons in their youth
will be like well-nurtured plants,(GI)
and our daughters will be like pillars(GJ)
carved to adorn a palace.
13 Our barns will be filled(GK)
with every kind of provision.
Our sheep will increase by thousands,
by tens of thousands in our fields;

There will be no breaching of walls,(GM)
no going into captivity,
no cry of distress in our streets.(GN)
15 Blessed is the people(GO) of whom this is true;
blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.

1 I will exalt you,(GP) my God the King;(GQ)
I will praise your name(GR) for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will praise(GS) you
and extol your name(GT) for ever and ever.
3 Great(GU) is the Lord and most worthy of praise;(GV)
his greatness no one can fathom.(GW)
4 One generation(GX) commends your works to another;
they tell(GY) of your mighty acts.(GZ)
5 They speak of the glorious splendor(HA) of your majesty—
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.[j](HB)

The Lord is trustworthy(HV) in all he promises(HW)
and faithful in all he does.[k]
14 The Lord upholds(HX) all who fall

15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food(IA) at the proper time.
16 You open your hand
and satisfy the desires(IB) of every living thing.
17 The Lord is righteous(IC) in all his ways
and faithful in all he does.(ID)
18 The Lord is near(IE) to all who call on him,(IF)
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desires(IG) of those who fear him;(IH)
he hears their cry(II) and saves them.(IJ)
20 The Lord watches over(IK) all who love him,(IL)
but all the wicked he will destroy.(IM)
