Our Help Is in the Name of the Lord

A Song of (A)Ascents. Of David.

124 (B)If it had not been the Lord who was on our side—
    (C)let Israel now say—
if it had not been the Lord who was on our side
when people rose up against us,
then they would have (D)swallowed us up alive,
    when their anger was kindled against us;
then (E)the flood would have (F)swept us away,
    the torrent would have gone (G)over us;
then over us would have gone
    the raging waters.

Blessed be the Lord,
    who has not given us
    as prey to their teeth!
We have escaped like a bird
    from (H)the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
    and we have escaped!

(I)Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

The Lord Surrounds His People

A Song of (J)Ascents.

125 Those who (K)trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which (L)cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so (M)the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
For (N)the scepter of wickedness shall not (O)rest
on (P)the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous (Q)stretch out
    their hands to do wrong.
(R)Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are (S)upright in their hearts!
But those who (T)turn aside to their (U)crooked ways
the Lord will lead away with (V)evildoers!
    (W)Peace be upon Israel!

Psalm 124

A song of ascents. Of David.

If the Lord had not been on our side—
    let Israel say(A)
if the Lord had not been on our side
    when people attacked us,
they would have swallowed us alive
    when their anger flared against us;
the flood(B) would have engulfed us,
the torrent(C) would have swept over us,
the raging waters
    would have swept us away.

Praise be to the Lord,
who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird
    from the fowler’s snare;(D)
the snare has been broken,(E)
    and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name(F) of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven(G) and earth.

Psalm 125

A song of ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,(H)
which cannot be shaken(I) but endures forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,(J)
so the Lord surrounds(K) his people
    both now and forevermore.

The scepter(L) of the wicked will not remain(M)
over the land allotted to the righteous,
for then the righteous might use
    their hands to do evil.(N)

Lord, do good(O) to those who are good,
to those who are upright in heart.(P)
But those who turn(Q) to crooked ways(R)
the Lord will banish(S) with the evildoers.

Peace be on Israel.(T)

The Altar

13 “These are the measurements of (A)the altar by cubits (the cubit being (B)a cubit and a handbreadth):[a] its base shall be one cubit high[b] and one cubit broad, with a rim of one span[c] around its edge. And this shall be the height of the altar: 14 from the base on the ground to the lower ledge, two cubits, with a breadth of one cubit; and from the smaller ledge to the larger ledge, four cubits, with a breadth of one cubit; 15 and the altar hearth, four cubits; and from the altar hearth projecting upward, (C)four horns. 16 The altar hearth shall be (D)square, twelve cubits long by twelve broad. 17 The ledge also shall be square, fourteen cubits long by fourteen broad, with a rim around it half a cubit broad, and its base one cubit all around. (E)The steps of the altar shall face east.”

18 And he said to me, (F)“Son of man, thus says the Lord God: These are the ordinances for the altar: On the day when it is erected for offering burnt offerings upon it and (G)for throwing blood against it, 19 you shall give to (H)the Levitical priests (I)of the family of Zadok, who draw near to me to minister to me, declares the Lord God, (J)a bull from the herd for a sin offering. 20 And (K)you shall take some of its blood and put it on (L)the four horns of the altar and on the four corners of the ledge and upon (M)the rim all around. (N)Thus you shall purify the altar and make atonement for it. 21 You shall also take the bull of the sin offering, and (O)it shall be burned in the appointed place belonging to the temple, outside the sacred area. 22 And on the second day you shall offer a male goat without blemish for a sin offering; and the altar shall be purified, as it was purified with the bull. 23 When you have finished (P)purifying it, you shall offer a bull from the herd without blemish and (Q)a ram from the flock without blemish. 24 You shall present them before the Lord, and the priests (R)shall sprinkle salt on them and offer them up as a burnt offering to the Lord. 25 (S)For seven days you shall provide daily a male goat for a sin offering; also, a bull from the herd and a ram from the flock, without blemish, shall be provided. 26 Seven days shall they make atonement for the altar and cleanse it, and so consecrate it.[d] 27 And when they have completed these days, then (T)from the eighth day onward the priests shall offer on the altar your burnt offerings and your (U)peace offerings, and (V)I will accept you, declares the Lord God.”

The Gate for the Prince

44 Then he brought me (W)back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, (X)which faces east. And it was shut. And the Lord said to me, “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for (Y)the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it. Therefore it shall remain shut. Only (Z)the prince may sit in it (AA)to eat bread before the Lord. He (AB)shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gate, and shall go out by the same way.”

Then he brought me by way of (AC)the north gate to the front of the temple, and I looked, and behold, (AD)the glory of the Lord filled the temple of the Lord. And (AE)I fell on my face. And the Lord said to me, (AF)“Son of man, mark well, (AG)see with your eyes, (AH)and hear with your ears all that I shall tell you concerning (AI)all the statutes of the temple of the Lord and all its laws. And mark well (AJ)the entrance to the temple and all the exits from the sanctuary. And say to (AK)the rebellious house,[e] to the (AL)house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: O house of Israel, (AM)enough of all your abominations, in (AN)admitting foreigners, (AO)uncircumcised in heart and flesh, to be in my sanctuary, (AP)profaning my temple, when you offer to me my food, the fat and the blood. You[f] have broken my covenant, in addition to all your abominations. And (AQ)you have not kept charge of my holy things, but you have set others to keep my charge for you in my sanctuary.

“Thus says the Lord God: (AR)No foreigner, uncircumcised in heart and flesh, of all the foreigners who are among the people of Israel, shall enter my sanctuary. 10 But (AS)the Levites who went far from me, going astray from me after their idols (AT)when Israel went astray, (AU)shall bear their punishment.[g] 11 They shall be (AV)ministers in my sanctuary, having oversight (AW)at the gates of the temple and ministering in the temple. They shall slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people, and (AX)they shall stand before the people, to minister to them. 12 Because they ministered to them before their idols and became (AY)a stumbling block of iniquity to the house of Israel, therefore I have (AZ)sworn concerning them, declares the Lord God, and they shall bear their punishment. 13 They (BA)shall not come near to me, to serve me as priest, nor come near any of my holy things and the things that are most holy, but (BB)they shall bear their shame and the abominations that they have committed. 14 Yet I will appoint them to keep (BC)charge of the temple, (BD)to do all its service and all that is to be done in it.

The Great Altar Restored

13 “These are the measurements of the altar(A) in long cubits,[a] that cubit being a cubit and a handbreadth: Its gutter is a cubit deep and a cubit wide, with a rim of one span[b] around the edge. And this is the height of the altar: 14 From the gutter on the ground up to the lower ledge that goes around the altar it is two cubits high, and the ledge is a cubit wide.[c] From this lower ledge to the upper ledge that goes around the altar it is four cubits high, and that ledge is also a cubit wide.[d] 15 Above that, the altar hearth(B) is four cubits high, and four horns(C) project upward from the hearth. 16 The altar hearth is square, twelve cubits[e] long and twelve cubits wide.(D) 17 The upper ledge(E) also is square, fourteen cubits[f] long and fourteen cubits wide. All around the altar is a gutter of one cubit with a rim of half a cubit.[g] The steps(F) of the altar face east.(G)

18 Then he said to me, “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: These will be the regulations for sacrificing burnt offerings(H) and splashing blood(I) against the altar when it is built: 19 You are to give a young bull(J) as a sin offering[h] to the Levitical priests of the family of Zadok,(K) who come near(L) to minister before me, declares the Sovereign Lord. 20 You are to take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar(M) and on the four corners of the upper ledge(N) and all around the rim, and so purify the altar(O) and make atonement for it. 21 You are to take the bull for the sin offering and burn it in the designated part of the temple area outside the sanctuary.(P)

22 “On the second day you are to offer a male goat without defect for a sin offering, and the altar is to be purified as it was purified with the bull. 23 When you have finished purifying it, you are to offer a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(Q) 24 You are to offer them before the Lord, and the priests are to sprinkle salt(R) on them and sacrifice them as a burnt offering to the Lord.

25 “For seven days(S) you are to provide a male goat daily for a sin offering; you are also to provide a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(T) 26 For seven days they are to make atonement for the altar and cleanse it; thus they will dedicate it. 27 At the end of these days, from the eighth day(U) on, the priests are to present your burnt offerings(V) and fellowship offerings(W) on the altar. Then I will accept you, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

The Priesthood Restored

44 Then the man brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east,(X) and it was shut. The Lord said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no one may enter through it.(Y) It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it. The prince himself is the only one who may sit inside the gateway to eat in the presence(Z) of the Lord. He is to enter by way of the portico of the gateway and go out the same way.(AA)

Then the man brought me by way of the north gate(AB) to the front of the temple. I looked and saw the glory of the Lord filling the temple(AC) of the Lord, and I fell facedown.(AD)

The Lord said to me, “Son of man, look carefully, listen closely and give attention to everything I tell you concerning all the regulations and instructions regarding the temple of the Lord. Give attention to the entrance(AE) to the temple and all the exits of the sanctuary.(AF) Say to rebellious Israel,(AG) ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Enough of your detestable practices, people of Israel! In addition to all your other detestable practices, you brought foreigners uncircumcised in heart(AH) and flesh into my sanctuary, desecrating my temple while you offered me food, fat and blood, and you broke my covenant.(AI) Instead of carrying out your duty in regard to my holy things, you put others in charge of my sanctuary.(AJ) This is what the Sovereign Lord says: No foreigner uncircumcised in heart and flesh is to enter my sanctuary, not even the foreigners who live among the Israelites.(AK)

10 “‘The Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray(AL) and who wandered from me after their idols must bear the consequences of their sin.(AM) 11 They may serve in my sanctuary, having charge of the gates of the temple and serving in it; they may slaughter the burnt offerings(AN) and sacrifices for the people and stand before the people and serve them.(AO) 12 But because they served them in the presence of their idols and made the people of Israel fall(AP) into sin, therefore I have sworn with uplifted hand(AQ) that they must bear the consequences of their sin, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AR) 13 They are not to come near to serve me as priests or come near any of my holy things or my most holy offerings; they must bear the shame(AS) of their detestable practices.(AT) 14 And I will appoint them to guard the temple for all the work that is to be done in it.(AU)

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 (A)“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are (B)ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them (C)by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, (D)every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 (E)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them (F)by their fruits.

I Never Knew You

21 (G)“Not everyone who (H)says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will (I)enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who (J)does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 (K)On that day (L)many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not (M)prophesy in your name, and cast out demons (N)in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 (O)And then will I declare to them, ‘I (P)never knew you; (Q)depart from me, (R)you workers of lawlessness.’

Build Your House on the Rock

24 (S)“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like (T)a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like (U)a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

The Authority of Jesus

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, (V)the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 (W)for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

When he came down from the mountain, (X)great crowds followed him. (Y)And behold, a leper[a] came to him and (Z)knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus[b] stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, (AA)“See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, (AB)show yourself to the priest and (AC)offer the gift that Moses commanded, (AD)for a proof to them.”

True and False Prophets

15 “Watch out for false prophets.(A) They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.(B) 16 By their fruit you will recognize them.(C) Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?(D) 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.(E) 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.(F) 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

True and False Disciples

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(G) will enter the kingdom of heaven,(H) but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.(I) 22 Many will say to me on that day,(J) ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’(K) 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’(L)

The Wise and Foolish Builders(M)

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice(N) is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,(O) the crowds were amazed at his teaching,(P) 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(Q)

When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy[a](R) came and knelt before him(S) and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone.(T) But go, show yourself to the priest(U) and offer the gift Moses commanded,(V) as a testimony to them.”
