Our Eyes Look to the Lord Our God
A Song of (A)Ascents.
123 To you I (B)lift up my eyes,
O you who are (C)enthroned in the heavens!
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maidservant
to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
till he has mercy upon us.
3 (D)Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
for we have had more than enough of (E)contempt.
4 Our soul has had more than enough
of (F)the scorn of (G)those who are at ease,
of the contempt of (H)the proud.
Our Help Is in the Name of the Lord

124 (J)If it had not been the Lord who was on our side—
(K)let Israel now say—
2 if it had not been the Lord who was on our side
when people rose up against us,
3 then they would have (L)swallowed us up alive,
when their anger was kindled against us;
4 then (M)the flood would have (N)swept us away,
the torrent would have gone (O)over us;
5 then over us would have gone
the raging waters.
6 Blessed be the Lord,
who has not given us
as prey to their teeth!
7 We have escaped like a bird
from (P)the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
and we have escaped!
8 (Q)Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
The Lord Surrounds His People

125 Those who (S)trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which (T)cannot be moved, but abides forever.
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so (U)the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
3 For (V)the scepter of wickedness shall not (W)rest
on (X)the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous (Y)stretch out
their hands to do wrong.
4 (Z)Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are (AA)upright in their hearts!
5 But those who (AB)turn aside to their (AC)crooked ways
the Lord will lead away with (AD)evildoers!

Restore Our Fortunes, O Lord

126 When the Lord (AG)restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who (AH)dream.
2 Then our (AI)mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
(AJ)“The Lord has done great things for them.”
3 The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad.
4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negeb!
5 (AK)Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
6 He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.
Unless the Lord Builds the House

127 Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord (AM)watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
2 It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious (AN)toil;
for he gives to his (AO)beloved (AP)sleep.
3 Behold, (AQ)children are a heritage from the Lord,
(AR)the fruit of the womb a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of (AS)a warrior
are the children[a] of one's youth.
5 Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies (AT)in the gate.[b]

2 You (AX)shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.

within your house;
your children will be like (AZ)olive shoots
around your table.
4 Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
who fears the Lord.

May you see (BC)the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life!

They Have Afflicted Me from My Youth

129 “Greatly[c] have they (BG)afflicted me (BH)from my youth”—
(BI)let Israel now say—
2 “Greatly have they (BJ)afflicted me (BK)from my youth,
(BL)yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 (BM)The plowers plowed (BN)upon my back;
they made long their furrows.”
4 The Lord is righteous;
he has cut (BO)the cords of the wicked.
5 May all who hate Zion
be (BP)put to shame and turned backward!
6 Let them be like (BQ)the grass on the housetops,
which (BR)withers before it grows up,
7 with which the reaper does not fill his hand
nor the binder of sheaves his arms,
8 nor do those who pass by say,
(BS)“The blessing of the Lord be upon you!

My Soul Waits for the Lord

130 Out of (BV)the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
2 O Lord, hear my voice!
(BW)Let your ears be attentive
to (BX)the voice of my pleas for mercy!
3 If you, O Lord, should (BY)mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could (BZ)stand?
4 But with you there is (CA)forgiveness,
(CB)that you may be feared.
5 I (CC)wait for the Lord, (CD)my soul waits,
and (CE)in his word I hope;

131 O Lord, my heart is not (CM)lifted up;
my eyes are not (CN)raised too high;
I do not (CO)occupy myself with things
too great and (CP)too marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,

like a weaned child is my soul within me.

you and the ark of your (DF)might.
9 Let your (DG)priests be (DH)clothed with righteousness,
and let your (DI)saints shout for joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
(DJ)do not turn away the face of (DK)your anointed one.
11 (DL)The Lord swore to David a sure oath
(DM)from which he will not turn back:
(DN)“One of the sons of your body[d]
I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
and my testimonies that I shall teach them,
their sons also forever
shall (DO)sit on your throne.”
13 For the Lord has (DP)chosen Zion;
he has (DQ)desired it for his dwelling place:
14 “This is my (DR)resting place forever;
here I will (DS)dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly (DT)bless her provisions;
I will (DU)satisfy her poor with bread.
16 Her (DV)priests I will clothe with salvation,
and her (DW)saints will shout for joy.
17 There I will make (DX)a horn to sprout for David;
I have prepared (DY)a lamp for (DZ)my anointed.
18 His enemies I will (EA)clothe with shame,
but on him his crown will shine.”

133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when (EC)brothers dwell in unity![e]
2 It is like the precious (ED)oil on (EE)the head,
running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on (EF)the collar of his robes!
3 It is like (EG)the dew of (EH)Hermon,
which falls on (EI)the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord (EJ)has commanded the blessing,

a heritage to his people Israel.

14 (FP)For the Lord will vindicate his people
and (FQ)have compassion on his servants.
15 (FR)The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
16 They have mouths, but do not speak;
they have eyes, but do not see;
17 they have ears, but do not hear,
nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them become like them,
so do all who trust in them.

How Shall We Sing the Lord's Song?
137 By the waters of Babylon,
there we sat down and wept,
when we remembered Zion.
2 On the willows[i] there
we hung up our lyres.
3 For there our captors
required of us songs,
and our tormentors, mirth, saying,
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 (GT)How shall we sing the Lord's song
in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
(GU)let my right hand forget its skill!
6 Let my (GV)tongue stick to the roof of my mouth,
if I do not remember you,
if I do not set Jerusalem
above my highest joy!
7 Remember, O Lord, against the (GW)Edomites
(GX)the day of Jerusalem,
how they said, (GY)“Lay it bare, lay it bare,
down to its foundations!”
8 O daughter of Babylon, (GZ)doomed to be destroyed,
blessed shall he be who (HA)repays you
with what you have done to us!

and (HB)dashes them against the rock!

and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,

139 O Lord, you have (HQ)searched me and known me!
2 You (HR)know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you (HS)discern my thoughts from afar.
3 You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, (HT)you know it altogether.
5 You (HU)hem me in, behind and before,
and (HV)lay your hand upon me.
6 (HW)Such knowledge is (HX)too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.

How vast is the sum of them!

preserve me from (JA)violent men,
2 who plan evil things in their heart
and (JB)stir up wars continually.

4 Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
preserve me from (JG)violent men,
who have planned to trip up my feet.
5 The arrogant have (JH)hidden a trap for me,

6 (JK)I say to the Lord, You are my God;
give ear to (JL)the voice of my pleas for mercy, O Lord!
7 O Lord, my Lord, (JM)the strength of my salvation,
you have covered my head in the day of battle.
8 (JN)Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked;
do not further their[q] evil plot, or (JO)they will be exalted! Selah
9 As for the head of those who surround me,
let (JP)the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!
10 Let (JQ)burning coals fall upon them!
Let them be cast into fire,
into miry pits, no more to rise!
11 Let not the slanderer be established in the land;
let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!
12 I know that the Lord will (JR)maintain the cause of the afflicted,
and (JS)will execute justice for the needy.
13 Surely (JT)the righteous shall give thanks to your name;
(JU)the upright shall dwell in your presence.

141 O Lord, I call upon you; (JV)hasten to me!
Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
2 Let (JW)my prayer be counted as incense before you,
and (JX)the lifting up of my hands as (JY)the evening sacrifice!
3 (JZ)Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
(KA)keep watch over the door of my lips!
4 (KB)Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who (KC)work iniquity,
and (KD)let me not eat of their delicacies!
5 (KE)Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness;
let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head;
let my head not refuse it.
Yet (KF)my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.
6 When their judges are (KG)thrown over the cliff,[r]
then they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant.
7 As when one plows and breaks up the earth,
so shall our bones (KH)be scattered at the mouth of Sheol.[s]
8 But (KI)my eyes are toward you, O God, my Lord;
(KJ)in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless![t]
9 Keep me from (KK)the trap that they have laid for me
and from the snares of evildoers!

while I pass by safely.

I tell my trouble before him.

they have (KR)hidden a trap for me.

(KU)there is none who takes notice of me;
(KV)no refuge remains to me;
no one cares for my soul.

Deliver me from my persecutors,

and my fingers for battle;

3 O Lord, (MQ)what is man that you (MR)regard him,
or the son of man that you think of him?
4 (MS)Man is like a breath;
his days are like (MT)a passing (MU)shadow.
5 (MV)Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down!
(MW)Touch the mountains so that they smoke!
6 (MX)Flash forth the lightning and scatter them;
(MY)send out your arrows and rout them!
7 (MZ)Stretch out your hand from on high;
(NA)rescue me and deliver me from the many waters,
from the hand (NB)of foreigners,
8 whose mouths speak (NC)lies
and whose right hand is (ND)a right hand of falsehood.
9 I will sing (NE)a new song to you, O God;
upon (NF)a ten-stringed harp I will play to you,
10 who gives victory to kings,
who (NG)rescues David his servant from the cruel sword.
11 Rescue me and deliver me
from the hand (NH)of foreigners,

and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
12 May our sons in their youth
be like (NJ)plants full grown,
our daughters like (NK)corner pillars
cut for the structure of a palace;
13 (NL)may our granaries be full,
(NM)providing all kinds of produce;
may our sheep bring forth thousands
and ten thousands in our fields;
14 may our cattle be heavy with young,
suffering no mishap or failure in bearing;[x]
may there be no (NN)cry of distress in our streets!

145 (NQ)I will extol you, my God and (NR)King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you
(NS)and praise your name forever and ever.
3 (NT)Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his (NU)greatness is unsearchable.
4 (NV)One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On (NW)the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 They shall speak of (NX)the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall pour forth the fame of your (NY)abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
8 The Lord is (NZ)gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The Lord is (OA)good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.

11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
and tell of your power,

13 (OG)Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.

From the deadly sword(PA) 11 deliver me;
rescue me(PB) from the hands of foreigners(PC)
whose mouths are full of lies,(PD)
whose right hands are deceitful.(PE)
12 Then our sons in their youth
will be like well-nurtured plants,(PF)
and our daughters will be like pillars(PG)
carved to adorn a palace.
13 Our barns will be filled(PH)
with every kind of provision.
Our sheep will increase by thousands,
by tens of thousands in our fields;
14 our oxen(PI) will draw heavy loads.[p]
There will be no breaching of walls,(PJ)
no going into captivity,
no cry of distress in our streets.(PK)
15 Blessed is the people(PL) of whom this is true;
blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.

A psalm of praise. Of David.
1 I will exalt you,(PM) my God the King;(PN)
I will praise your name(PO) for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will praise(PP) you
and extol your name(PQ) for ever and ever.
3 Great(PR) is the Lord and most worthy of praise;(PS)
his greatness no one can fathom.(PT)
4 One generation(PU) commends your works to another;
they tell(PV) of your mighty acts.(PW)
5 They speak of the glorious splendor(PX) of your majesty—
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.[r](PY)
6 They tell(PZ) of the power of your awesome works—(QA)

7 They celebrate your abundant goodness(QD)
and joyfully sing(QE) of your righteousness.(QF)
9 The Lord is good(QI) to all;

11 They tell of the glory of your kingdom(QN)
and speak of your might,(QO)
12 so that all people may know of your mighty acts(QP)

13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,(QR)
and your dominion endures through all generations.
The Lord is trustworthy(QS) in all he promises(QT)
and faithful in all he does.[s]
14 The Lord upholds(QU) all who fall
and lifts up all(QV) who are bowed down.(QW)
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food(QX) at the proper time.
16 You open your hand
and satisfy the desires(QY) of every living thing.
17 The Lord is righteous(QZ) in all his ways
and faithful in all he does.(RA)
18 The Lord is near(RB) to all who call on him,(RC)
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desires(RD) of those who fear him;(RE)
he hears their cry(RF) and saves them.(RG)
20 The Lord watches over(RH) all who love him,(RI)
but all the wicked he will destroy.(RJ)
21 My mouth will speak(RK) in praise of the Lord.
Let every creature(RL) praise his holy name(RM)
for ever and ever.
Psalm 146
1 Praise the Lord.[t]
Praise the Lord,(RN) my soul.
2 I will praise the Lord all my life;(RO)
I will sing praise(RP) to my God as long as I live.(RQ)
3 Do not put your trust in princes,(RR)
in human beings,(RS) who cannot save.
4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;(RT)
on that very day their plans come to nothing.(RU)
5 Blessed are those(RV) whose help(RW) is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.
