⁵ The Lord examines the righteous,^(A)
    but the wicked, those who love violence,
    he hates with a passion.^(B)
6 On the wicked he will rain
    fiery coals and burning sulfur;^(C)
    a scorching wind^(D) will be their lot.

⁷ For the Lord is righteous,^(E)
    he loves justice;^(F)
    the upright^(G) will see his face.^(H)

³ May the Lord silence all flattering lips^(L)
    and every boastful tongue—^(M)
4 those who say,
    “By our tongues we will prevail;^(N)
    our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?”

⁵ “Because the poor are plundered^(O) and the needy groan,^(P)
    I will now arise,^(Q)” says the Lord.
    “I will protect them^(R) from those who malign them.”
⁶ And the words of the Lord are flawless,^(S)
    like silver purified^(T) in a crucible,^(U)
    like gold^[c] refined seven times.

⁷ You, Lord, will keep the needy safe^(V)
    and will protect us forever from the wicked,^(W)
8 who freely strut^(X) about
    when what is vile is honored by the human race.

³ Look on me^(AD) and answer,^(AE) Lord my God.
    Give light to my eyes,^(AF) or I will sleep in death,^(AG)
4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,^(AH)”
    and my foes will rejoice when I fall.^(AI)

⁵ But I trust in your unfailing love;^(AJ)
    my heart rejoices in your salvation.^(AK)
6 I will sing^(AL) the Lord’s praise,
    for he has been good to me.

² The Lord looks down from heaven^(AO)
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,^(AP)
    any who seek God.^(AQ)
3 All have turned away,^(AR) all have become corrupt;^(AS)
    there is no one who does good,^(AT)
    not even one.^(AU)

⁴ Do all these evildoers know nothing?^(AV)

They devour my people^(AW) as though eating bread;
    they never call on the Lord.^(AX)
5 But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.
⁶ You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.^(AY)

⁷ Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!^(AZ)
    When the Lord restores^(BA) his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

² The one whose walk is blameless,^(BE)
    who does what is righteous,
    who speaks the truth^(BF) from their heart;
³ whose tongue utters no slander,^(BG)
    who does no wrong to a neighbor,
    and casts no slur on others;
⁴ who despises a vile person
    but honors^(BH) those who fear the Lord;
who keeps an oath^(BI) even when it hurts,
    and does not change their mind;
⁵ who lends money to the poor without interest;^(BJ)
    who does not accept a bribe^(BK) against the innocent.

Whoever does these things
    will never be shaken.^(BL)

² I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;^(BO)
    apart from you I have no good thing.”^(BP)
3 I say of the holy people^(BQ) who are in the land,^(BR)
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
⁴ Those who run after other gods^(BS) will suffer^(BT) more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names^(BU) on my lips.

⁵ Lord, you alone are my portion^(BV) and my cup;^(BW)
    you make my lot^(BX) secure.
⁶ The boundary lines^(BY) have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.^(BZ)
7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;^(CA)
    even at night^(CB) my heart instructs me.
⁸ I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand,^(CC) I will not be shaken.^(CD)

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad^(CE) and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,^(CF)
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,^(CG)
    nor will you let your faithful^[g] one^(CH) see decay.^(CI)
11 You make known to me the path of life;^(CJ)
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,^(CK)
    with eternal pleasures^(CL) at your right hand.^(CM)

³ Though you probe my heart,^(CT)
    though you examine me at night and test me,^(CU)
you will find that I have planned no evil;^(CV)
    my mouth has not transgressed.^(CW)
4 Though people tried to bribe me,
    I have kept myself from the ways of the violent
    through what your lips have commanded.
⁵ My steps have held to your paths;^(CX)
    my feet have not stumbled.^(CY)

⁶ I call on you, my God, for you will answer me;^(CZ)
    turn your ear to me^(DA) and hear my prayer.^(DB)
7 Show me the wonders of your great love,^(DC)
    you who save by your right hand^(DD)
    those who take refuge^(DE) in you from their foes.
⁸ Keep me^(DF) as the apple of your eye;^(DG)
    hide me^(DH) in the shadow of your wings^(DI)
9 from the wicked who are out to destroy me,
    from my mortal enemies who surround me.^(DJ)

¹⁰ They close up their callous hearts,^(DK)
    and their mouths speak with arrogance.^(DL)
11 They have tracked me down, they now surround me,^(DM)
    with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.
¹² They are like a lion^(DN) hungry for prey,^(DO)
    like a fierce lion crouching in cover.

¹³ Rise up,^(DP) Lord, confront them, bring them down;^(DQ)
    with your sword rescue me from the wicked.
¹⁴ By your hand save me from such people, Lord,
    from those of this world^(DR) whose reward is in this life.^(DS)
May what you have stored up for the wicked fill their bellies;
    may their children gorge themselves on it,
    and may there be leftovers^(DT) for their little ones.

¹⁵ As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face;
    when I awake,^(DU) I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.^(DV)

² The Lord is my rock,^(DY) my fortress^(DZ) and my deliverer;^(EA)
    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,^(EB)
    my shield^[i](EC) and the horn^[j] of my salvation,^(ED) my stronghold.

³ I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,^(EE)
    and I have been saved from my enemies.^(EF)
4 The cords of death^(EG) entangled me;
    the torrents^(EH) of destruction overwhelmed me.
⁵ The cords of the grave coiled around me;
    the snares of death^(EI) confronted me.

⁶ In my distress^(EJ) I called to the Lord;^(EK)
    I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;^(EL)
    my cry came^(EM) before him, into his ears.
⁷ The earth trembled^(EN) and quaked,^(EO)
    and the foundations of the mountains shook;^(EP)
    they trembled because he was angry.^(EQ)
8 Smoke rose from his nostrils;^(ER)
    consuming fire^(ES) came from his mouth,
    burning coals^(ET) blazed out of it.
⁹ He parted the heavens and came down;^(EU)
    dark clouds^(EV) were under his feet.
¹⁰ He mounted the cherubim^(EW) and flew;
    he soared^(EX) on the wings of the wind.^(EY)
11 He made darkness his covering,^(EZ) his canopy^(FA) around him—
    the dark rain clouds of the sky.
¹² Out of the brightness of his presence^(FB) clouds advanced,
    with hailstones^(FC) and bolts of lightning.^(FD)
13 The Lord thundered^(FE) from heaven;
    the voice of the Most High resounded.^[k]
14 He shot his arrows^(FF) and scattered the enemy,
    with great bolts of lightning^(FG) he routed them.^(FH)
15 The valleys of the sea were exposed
    and the foundations^(FI) of the earth laid bare
at your rebuke,^(FJ) Lord,
    at the blast of breath from your nostrils.^(FK)

¹⁶ He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
    he drew me out of deep waters.^(FL)
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,^(FM)
    from my foes, who were too strong for me.^(FN)
18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,^(FO)
    but the Lord was my support.^(FP)
19 He brought me out into a spacious place;^(FQ)
    he rescued me because he delighted in me.^(FR)

²⁰ The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;^(FS)
    according to the cleanness of my hands^(FT) he has rewarded me.^(FU)
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;^(FV)
    I am not guilty of turning^(FW) from my God.
²² All his laws are before me;^(FX)
    I have not turned away from his decrees.
²³ I have been blameless^(FY) before him
    and have kept myself from sin.
²⁴ The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,^(FZ)
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

²⁵ To the faithful^(GA) you show yourself faithful,^(GB)
    to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
²⁶ to the pure^(GC) you show yourself pure,
    but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.^(GD)
27 You save the humble^(GE)
    but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.^(GF)
28 You, Lord, keep my lamp^(GG) burning;
    my God turns my darkness into light.^(GH)
29 With your help^(GI) I can advance against a troop^[l];
    with my God I can scale a wall.

³⁰ As for God, his way is perfect:^(GJ)
    The Lord’s word is flawless;^(GK)
    he shields^(GL) all who take refuge^(GM) in him.
³¹ For who is God besides the Lord?^(GN)
    And who is the Rock^(GO) except our God?
³² It is God who arms me with strength^(GP)
    and keeps my way secure.^(GQ)
33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;^(GR)
    he causes me to stand on the heights.^(GS)
34 He trains my hands for battle;^(GT)
    my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
³⁵ You make your saving help my shield,
    and your right hand sustains^(GU) me;
    your help has made me great.
³⁶ You provide a broad path^(GV) for my feet,
    so that my ankles do not give way.^(GW)

³⁷ I pursued my enemies^(GX) and overtook them;
    I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
³⁸ I crushed them^(GY) so that they could not rise;^(GZ)
    they fell beneath my feet.^(HA)
39 You armed me with strength^(HB) for battle;
    you humbled my adversaries^(HC) before me.
⁴⁰ You made my enemies turn their backs^(HD) in flight,
    and I destroyed^(HE) my foes.
⁴¹ They cried for help, but there was no one to save them^(HF)—
    to the Lord, but he did not answer.^(HG)
42 I beat them as fine as windblown dust;^(HH)
    I trampled them^[m] like mud in the streets.
⁴³ You have delivered me from the attacks of the people;
    you have made me the head of nations.^(HI)
People I did not know^(HJ) now serve me,
⁴⁴     foreigners^(HK) cower before me;
    as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
⁴⁵ They all lose heart;^(HL)
    they come trembling^(HM) from their strongholds.^(HN)

⁴⁶ The Lord lives!^(HO) Praise be to my Rock!^(HP)
    Exalted be God^(HQ) my Savior!^(HR)
47 He is the God who avenges^(HS) me,
    who subdues nations^(HT) under me,
⁴⁸     who saves^(HU) me from my enemies.^(HV)
You exalted me above my foes;
    from a violent man^(HW) you rescued me.
⁴⁹ Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;^(HX)
    I will sing^(HY) the praises of your name.^(HZ)

⁵⁰ He gives his king great victories;
    he shows unfailing love to his anointed,^(IA)
    to David^(IB) and to his descendants forever.^(IC)

⁷ The law of the Lord^(IR) is perfect,^(IS)
    refreshing the soul.^(IT)
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,^(IU)
    making wise the simple.^(IV)
8 The precepts of the Lord are right,^(IW)
    giving joy^(IX) to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.^(IY)
9 The fear of the Lord^(IZ) is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
    and all of them are righteous.^(JA)

¹⁰ They are more precious than gold,^(JB)
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,^(JC)
    than honey from the honeycomb.^(JD)
11 By them your servant is warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.
¹² But who can discern their own errors?
    Forgive my hidden faults.^(JE)
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;^(JF)
    may they not rule over me.^(JG)
Then I will be blameless,^(JH)
    innocent of great transgression.

¹⁴ May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
    be pleasing^(JI) in your sight,
    Lord, my Rock^(JJ) and my Redeemer.^(JK)

May the Lord grant all your requests.^(JY)

⁶ Now this I know:
    The Lord gives victory to his anointed.^(JZ)
He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary
    with the victorious power of his right hand.^(KA)
7 Some trust in chariots^(KB) and some in horses,^(KC)
    but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.^(KD)
8 They are brought to their knees and fall,^(KE)
    but we rise up^(KF) and stand firm.^(KG)
9 Lord, give victory to the king!
    Answer us^(KH) when we call!

² You have granted him his heart’s desire^(KK)
    and have not withheld the request of his lips.^[s]
3 You came to greet him with rich blessings
    and placed a crown of pure gold^(KL) on his head.^(KM)
4 He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
    length of days, for ever and ever.^(KN)
5 Through the victories^(KO) you gave, his glory is great;
    you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.^(KP)
6 Surely you have granted him unending blessings
    and made him glad with the joy^(KQ) of your presence.^(KR)
7 For the king trusts in the Lord;^(KS)
    through the unfailing love^(KT) of the Most High^(KU)
    he will not be shaken.^(KV)

⁸ Your hand will lay hold^(KW) on all your enemies;
    your right hand will seize your foes.
⁹ When you appear for battle,
    you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
    and his fire will consume them.^(KX)
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
    their posterity from mankind.^(KY)
11 Though they plot evil^(KZ) against you
    and devise wicked schemes,^(LA) they cannot succeed.
¹² You will make them turn their backs^(LB)
    when you aim at them with drawn bow.

¹³ Be exalted^(LC) in your strength, Lord;^(LD)
    we will sing and praise your might.

³ Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;^(LJ)
    you are the one Israel praises.^[v](LK)
4 In you our ancestors put their trust;
    they trusted and you delivered them.^(LL)
5 To you they cried out^(LM) and were saved;
    in you they trusted^(LN) and were not put to shame.^(LO)

⁶ But I am a worm^(LP) and not a man,
    scorned by everyone,^(LQ) despised^(LR) by the people.
⁷ All who see me mock me;^(LS)
    they hurl insults,^(LT) shaking their heads.^(LU)
