40 Then (A)the anger of the Lord was kindled against (B)his people,
    and he abhorred his (C)heritage;
41 he (D)gave them into the hand of the nations,
    so that those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies (E)oppressed them,
    and they were brought into subjection under their power.
43 (F)Many times he delivered them,
    but they were rebellious in their (G)purposes
    and were (H)brought low through their iniquity.

44 Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
    when he (I)heard their cry.
45 For their sake he (J)remembered his covenant,
    and (K)relented according to (L)the abundance of his steadfast love.
46 He caused them to be (M)pitied
    by all those who held them captive.

47 (N)Save us, O Lord our God,
    and (O)gather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
    and glory in your praise.

48 (P)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting!
(Q)And let all the people say, “Amen!”
    (R)Praise the Lord!

17 (A)Gather up your bundle from the ground,
    O you who dwell under siege!
18 For thus says the Lord:
(B)“Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land
    at this time,
(C)and I will bring distress on them,
    that they may feel it.”

19 Woe is me because of my hurt!
    (D)My wound is grievous.
But I said, “Truly this is an affliction,
    and I must bear it.”
20 (E)My tent is destroyed,
    and all my cords are broken;
my children have gone from me,
    (F)and they are not;
there is no one to spread my tent again
    and (G)to set up my curtains.
21 (H)For the shepherds (I)are stupid
    and do not inquire of the Lord;
therefore they have not prospered,
    (J)and all their flock is scattered.

22 A voice, a rumor! Behold, it comes!—
    (K)a great commotion out of the north country
to make (L)the cities of Judah a desolation,
    (M)a lair of jackals.

23 (N)I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself,
    that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
24 (O)Correct me, O Lord, but in justice;
    not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.

25 (P)Pour out your wrath on the nations that know you not,
    and on the peoples that call not on your name,
(Q)for they have devoured Jacob;
    they have devoured him and consumed him,
    and have laid waste his habitation.

Beware of the Scribes

45 (A)And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and (B)the places of honor at feasts, 47 (C)who devour widows' houses and (D)for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

The Widow's Offering

21 (E)Jesus[a] looked up and saw the rich (F)putting their gifts into (G)the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two (H)small copper coins.[b] And he said, “Truly, I tell you, (I)this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her (J)poverty put in all (K)she had to live on.”
