Psalm 58[a]

1 Do you rulers indeed speak justly?(A)
Do you judge people with equity?
2 No, in your heart you devise injustice,(B)
and your hands mete out violence on the earth.(C)
3 Even from birth the wicked go astray;
from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake,(D)
like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
5 that will not heed(E) the tune of the charmer,(F)
however skillful the enchanter may be.
6 Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;(G)
Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!(H)
7 Let them vanish like water that flows away;(I)
when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.(J)
8 May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along,(K)
like a stillborn child(L) that never sees the sun.
9 Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns(M)—
whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away.[c](N)
10 The righteous will be glad(O) when they are avenged,(P)
when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.(Q)
11 Then people will say,
“Surely the righteous still are rewarded;(R)
surely there is a God who judges the earth.”(S)

1 Deliver me from my enemies, O God;(U)
be my fortress against those who are attacking me.(V)
2 Deliver me from evildoers(W)
and save me from those who are after my blood.(X)
3 See how they lie in wait for me!
Fierce men conspire(Y) against me
for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
4 I have done no wrong,(Z) yet they are ready to attack me.(AA)
Arise to help me; look on my plight!(AB)
5 You, Lord God Almighty,
you who are the God of Israel,(AC)
rouse yourself(AD) to punish all the nations;(AE)
show no mercy to wicked traitors.[f](AF)
6 They return at evening,
snarling like dogs,(AG)
and prowl about the city.
7 See what they spew from their mouths(AH)—
the words from their lips are sharp as swords,(AI)
and they think, “Who can hear us?”(AJ)
8 But you laugh at them, Lord;(AK)
you scoff at all those nations.(AL)
9 You are my strength,(AM) I watch for you;
you, God, are my fortress,(AN)
10 my God on whom I can rely.
God will go before me
and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,[g](AO)
or my people will forget.(AP)
In your might uproot them
and bring them down.(AQ)
12 For the sins of their mouths,(AR)
for the words of their lips,(AS)
let them be caught in their pride.(AT)
For the curses and lies they utter,
13 consume them in your wrath,
consume them till they are no more.(AU)
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
that God rules over Jacob.(AV)
14 They return at evening,
snarling like dogs,
and prowl about the city.
15 They wander about for food(AW)
and howl if not satisfied.
16 But I will sing(AX) of your strength,(AY)
in the morning(AZ) I will sing of your love;(BA)
for you are my fortress,(BB)
my refuge in times of trouble.(BC)
17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely.(BD)

1 You have rejected us,(BG) God, and burst upon us;
you have been angry(BH)—now restore us!(BI)
2 You have shaken the land(BJ) and torn it open;
mend its fractures,(BK) for it is quaking.
3 You have shown your people desperate times;(BL)
you have given us wine that makes us stagger.(BM)
4 But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner(BN)
to be unfurled against the bow.[l]
5 Save us and help us with your right hand,(BO)
that those you love(BP) may be delivered.
6 God has spoken from his sanctuary:
“In triumph I will parcel out Shechem(BQ)
and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.(BR)
7 Gilead(BS) is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim(BT) is my helmet,
Judah(BU) is my scepter.(BV)
8 Moab is my washbasin,
on Edom I toss my sandal;
over Philistia I shout in triumph.(BW)”
9 Who will bring me to the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
10 Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us
and no longer go out with our armies?(BX)
11 Give us aid against the enemy,
for human help is worthless.(BY)
12 With God we will gain the victory,
and he will trample down our enemies.(BZ)

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you,
I call as my heart grows faint;(CC)
lead me to the rock(CD) that is higher than I.
3 For you have been my refuge,(CE)
a strong tower against the foe.(CF)
4 I long to dwell(CG) in your tent forever
and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.[n](CH)
5 For you, God, have heard my vows;(CI)
you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.(CJ)
6 Increase the days of the king’s life,(CK)
his years for many generations.(CL)
7 May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever;(CM)

1 Truly my soul finds rest(CQ) in God;(CR)
my salvation comes from him.
2 Truly he is my rock(CS) and my salvation;(CT)
he is my fortress,(CU) I will never be shaken.(CV)
3 How long will you assault me?
Would all of you throw me down—
this leaning wall,(CW) this tottering fence?
4 Surely they intend to topple me
from my lofty place;
they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
but in their hearts they curse.[p](CX)
5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God;(CY)
my hope comes from him.
6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
7 My salvation and my honor depend on God[q];
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.(CZ)
8 Trust in him at all times, you people;(DA)
pour out your hearts to him,(DB)
for God is our refuge.
9 Surely the lowborn(DC) are but a breath,(DD)
the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance,(DE) they are nothing;
together they are only a breath.
10 Do not trust in extortion(DF)
or put vain hope in stolen goods;(DG)
though your riches increase,
do not set your heart on them.(DH)
11 One thing God has spoken,
two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,(DI)
12 and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”;(DJ)
and, “You reward everyone
according to what they have done.”(DK)

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.
1 You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,(DL)
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.(DM)
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary(DN)
and beheld your power and your glory.(DO)
3 Because your love is better than life,(DP)
my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,(DQ)
and in your name I will lift up my hands.(DR)
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;(DS)
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6 On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.(DT)

2 Hide me from the conspiracy(EG) of the wicked,(EH)
from the plots of evildoers.
3 They sharpen their tongues like swords(EI)
and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.(EJ)
4 They shoot from ambush at the innocent;(EK)
they shoot suddenly, without fear.(EL)
5 They encourage each other in evil plans,
they talk about hiding their snares;(EM)
they say, “Who will see it[t]?”(EN)
6 They plot injustice and say,
“We have devised a perfect plan!”
Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.
7 But God will shoot them with his arrows;
they will suddenly be struck down.
8 He will turn their own tongues against them(EO)
and bring them to ruin;
all who see them will shake their heads(EP) in scorn.(EQ)
9 All people will fear;(ER)
they will proclaim the works of God
and ponder what he has done.(ES)
10 The righteous will rejoice in the Lord(ET)
and take refuge in him;(EU)
all the upright in heart will glory in him!(EV)

1 Praise awaits[v] you, our God, in Zion;(EW)
to you our vows will be fulfilled.(EX)
2 You who answer prayer,
to you all people will come.(EY)
3 When we were overwhelmed by sins,(EZ)
you forgave[w] our transgressions.(FA)
4 Blessed are those you choose(FB)
and bring near(FC) to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,(FD)
of your holy temple.
5 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,(FE)
God our Savior,(FF)
the hope of all the ends of the earth(FG)
and of the farthest seas,(FH)
6 who formed the mountains(FI) by your power,
having armed yourself with strength,(FJ)
7 who stilled the roaring of the seas,(FK)
the roaring of their waves,
and the turmoil of the nations.(FL)
8 The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
where morning dawns, where evening fades,
you call forth songs of joy.(FM)
9 You care for the land and water it;(FN)
you enrich it abundantly.(FO)
The streams of God are filled with water
to provide the people with grain,(FP)
for so you have ordained it.[x]
10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges;
you soften it with showers(FQ) and bless its crops.
11 You crown the year with your bounty,(FR)
and your carts overflow with abundance.(FS)
12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;(FT)

58 Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?
2 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.
3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.
4 Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;
5 Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.
6 Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O Lord.
7 Let them melt away as waters which run continually: when he bendeth his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.
8 As a snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.
9 Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath.
10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.
3 For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Lord.
4 They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.
5 Thou therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.

3 How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.
4 They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.
5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

9 Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

63 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:
6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
8 My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
9 But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10 They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.
64 Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:
3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:
4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.
5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?
6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.
7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.
8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.
9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.
10 The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.
65 Praise waiteth for thee, O God, in Sion: and unto thee shall the vow be performed.
2 O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.
3 Iniquities prevail against me: as for our transgressions, thou shalt purge them away.
4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.
5 By terrible things in righteousness wilt thou answer us, O God of our salvation; who art the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are afar off upon the sea:
6 Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains; being girded with power:
7 Which stilleth the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people.
8 They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy tokens: thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice.
9 Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it.
10 Thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly: thou settlest the furrows thereof: thou makest it soft with showers: thou blessest the springing thereof.
11 Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness.
12 They drop upon the pastures of the wilderness: and the little hills rejoice on every side.
13 The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing.
