⁷ And he called the place Massah^[a](A) and Meribah^[b](B) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

¹³ These were the waters of Meribah,^[a](A) where the Israelites quarreled^(B) with the Lord and where he was proved holy among them.^(C)

¹⁵ As has just been said:

¹⁶ Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?^{(B) 17} And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?^{(C) 18} And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest^(D) if not to those who disobeyed?^{(E) 19} So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.^(F)

²² not one of those who saw my glory and the signs^(A) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times^(B)—

⁶ Why do you harden^(A) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them,^(B) did they^(C) not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?

¹¹ The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?^(A) How long will they refuse to believe in me,^(B) in spite of all the signs^(C) I have performed among them?

¹⁶ Do not put the Lord your God to the test^(A) as you did at Massah.
