¹⁷ And with whom was he angry forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?^{(A) 18} And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, if not to those who were disobedient?^{(B) 19} So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.^(C)

The Rest That God Promised

4 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest is still open, let us take care that none of you should seem to have failed to reach it.^{(D) 2} For indeed the good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them because they were not united by faith with those who listened.^[a](E)

⁸ while for those who are self-seeking and who obey not the truth but injustice, there will be wrath and fury.^{(A) 9} There will be affliction and distress for everyone who does evil, both the Jew first and the Greek,^(B)

¹⁴ And the length of time we had traveled from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation of warriors had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn concerning them.^{(A) 15} Indeed, the Lord’s own hand was against them, to root them out from the camp, until all had perished.^(B)
