^14 (A)I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, ^(B)I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,

⁷ It is for discipline that you have to endure. ^(B)God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? ⁸ If you are left without discipline, ^(C)in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. ⁹ Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to ^(D)the Father of spirits ^(E)and live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, ^(F)that we may share his holiness. ^11 (G)For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields ^(H)the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

³⁹ And I will afflict the offspring of David because of this, but not forever.’”

¹⁴ And the Lord raised up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite. He was of the royal house in Edom.

^31 (A)But if we judged^[a] ourselves truly, we would not be judged. ³² But when we are judged by the Lord, ^(B)we are disciplined^[b] so that we may not be ^(C)condemned along with the world.
