¹⁹ Then I saw the beast^(A) and the kings of the earth^(B) and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse^(C) and his army.

¹³ They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast.^(A)

The Plot to Kill Paul

¹² The next morning some Jews formed a conspiracy^(A) and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.^{(B) 13} More than forty men were involved in this plot.

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees^(A) called a meeting^(B) of the Sanhedrin.^(C)

“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.^{(D) 48} If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

⁴⁹ Then one of them, named Caiaphas,^(E) who was high priest that year,^(F) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! ⁵⁰ You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”^(G)

⁵¹ He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, ⁵² and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.^{(H) 53} So from that day on they plotted to take his life.^(I)

⁵ Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s^(A) son have plotted^(B) your ruin, saying, ⁶ “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” ⁷ Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:^(C)

² Now the house of David^(A) was told, “Aram has allied itself with^[a] Ephraim^(B)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,^(C) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.
