    Contend^(C) for me, my God and Lord.

¹⁴ “For a long time I have kept silent,^(F)
    I have been quiet and held myself back.^(G)
But now, like a woman in childbirth,
    I cry out, I gasp and pant.^(H)

²³ Awake,^(A) Lord! Why do you sleep?^(B)
    Rouse yourself!^(C) Do not reject us forever.^(D)
24 Why do you hide your face^(E)
    and forget^(F) our misery and oppression?^(G)

²⁵ We are brought down to the dust;^(H)
    our bodies cling to the ground.
²⁶ Rise up^(I) and help us;
    rescue^(J) us because of your unfailing love.^(K)

²² For the Lord is our judge,^(A)
    the Lord is our lawgiver,^(B)
the Lord is our king;^(C)
    it is he who will save^(D) us.

“Surely this is our God;^(B)
    we trusted^(C) in him, and he saved^(D) us.
This is the Lord, we trusted in him;
    let us rejoice^(E) and be glad in his salvation.”^(F)

³⁸ Yet he was merciful;^(A)
    he forgave^(B) their iniquities^(C)
    and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger^(D)
    and did not stir up his full wrath.
