⁴⁰ Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people,
    and he abhorred his heritage;^(A)

⁷ The Lord has scorned his altar,
    disowned his sanctuary;
he has delivered into the hand of the enemy
    the walls of her palaces;
a clamor was raised in the house of the Lord
    as on a day of festival.^(A)

² The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind
    to see if there are any who are wise,
    who seek after God.^(A)

³ They have all gone astray; they are all alike perverse;
    there is no one who does good,
    no, not one.^(B)

⁴ Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers
    who eat up my people as they eat bread
    and do not call upon the Lord?^(C)

⁵ There they shall be in great terror,
    for God is with the company of the righteous.^(D)

⁴ The Lord is in his holy temple;
    the Lord’s throne is in heaven.
    His eyes behold; his gaze examines humankind.^(A)

¹⁹ The Lord saw it and was jealous;^[a]
    he spurned^[b] his sons and daughters.^(A)
