⁴¹ Again and again they put God to the test;^(A)
    they vexed the Holy One of Israel.^(B)

⁸     do not harden your hearts^(A)
as you did in the rebellion,
    during the time of testing in the wilderness,
⁹ where your ancestors tested and tried me,
    though for forty years they saw what I did.^(B)
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
¹¹ So I declared on oath in my anger,^(C)
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ^(D)”^[a](E)

¹⁹ They spoke against God;^(A)
    they said, “Can God really
    spread a table in the wilderness?
²⁰ True, he struck the rock,
    and water gushed out,^(B)
    streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
    Can he supply meat^(C) for his people?”

²² Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed?^(A)
    Against whom have you raised your voice
and lifted your eyes in pride?
    Against the Holy One^(B) of Israel!
