    lying to him with their tongues;

“These people^(A) come near to me with their mouth
    and honor me with their lips,^(B)
    but their hearts are far from me.^(C)
Their worship of me
    is based on merely human rules they have been taught.^[a](D)

¹¹ “Whom have you so dreaded and feared^(A)
    that you have not been true to me,
and have neither remembered^(B) me
    nor taken this to heart?^(C)
Is it not because I have long been silent^(D)
    that you do not fear me?

¹² Then they believed his promises
    and sang his praise.^(A)

¹³ But they soon forgot^(B) what he had done
    and did not wait for his plan to unfold.^(C)

⁴⁴     foreigners^(A) cower before me;
    as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
