¹¹ Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water^(A) gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

¹² So Sarah laughed^(A) to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord^(B) is old, will I now have this pleasure?”

¹³ Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’^{(C) 14} Is anything too hard for the Lord?^(D) I will return to you at the appointed time next year,^(E) and Sarah will have a son.”^(F)

²¹ But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men^(A) on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ ²² Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”^(B)

²³ The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm too short?^(C) Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.^(D)”

¹⁸ “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves^(A) in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed,^(B) “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!”^(C) Now the Lord will give you meat,^(D) and you will eat it.

⁶ I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.^(A) Strike^(B) the rock, and water^(C) will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. ⁷ And he called the place Massah^[a](D) and Meribah^[b](E) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
