¹⁷ As for the rich in ^(A)this present age, charge them ^(B)not to be haughty, nor ^(C)to set their hopes on ^(D)the uncertainty of riches, but on God, ^(E)who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

¹⁰ “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities ^(A)that you did not build, ¹¹ and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, ^12 (B)then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of ^(A)all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

¹⁵ And he said to them, ^(A)“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” ¹⁶ And he told them a parable, saying, ^(B)“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, ¹⁷ and he thought to himself, ^(C)‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ ¹⁸ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my ^(D)barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up ^(E)for many years; relax, ^(F)eat, drink, be merry.”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, ^(G)‘Fool! ^(H)This night ^(I)your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, ^(J)whose will they be?’ ²¹ So is the one ^(K)who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

²³ And Jesus ^(A)looked around and said to his disciples, ^(B)“How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter ^(C)the kingdom of God!”
