⁴ They have venom like the venom of a serpent,
    like the deaf adder that stops its ear,^(A)

³ They make their tongue sharp as a snake’s,
    and under their lips is the venom of vipers. Selah^(A)

¹¹ If the snake bites before it is charmed,
    there is no advantage in a charmer.^(A)

¹³ “Their throats are opened graves;
    they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of vipers is under their lips.”^(A)

¹⁷ See, I am letting snakes loose among you,
    adders that cannot be charmed,
    and they shall bite you,
            says the Lord.^(A)

⁸ The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,
    and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den.

¹⁶ They will suck the poison of asps;
    the tongue of a viper will kill them.^(A)
