⁶ And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke ^(A)of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul,^[a] each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

⁵ For even ^(A)when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn—^(B)fighting without and fear within. ⁶ But ^(C)God, who comforts the downcast, ^(D)comforted us by the coming of Titus,

³ Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face ^(A)to seek the Lord, and ^(B)proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

⁸ For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers,^[a] of ^(A)the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. ⁹ Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us ^(B)rely not on ourselves ^(C)but on God ^(D)who raises the dead. ^10 (E)He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. ^(F)On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.
