³⁵ The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.^(A) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”^(B)

²⁷ A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed^(A) for him.

³⁹ Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^{(A) 40} and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^(B) save yourself!^(C) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”^{(D) 41} In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him.

²⁹ Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^(A) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^{(B) 30} come down from the cross and save yourself!” ³¹ In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him^(C) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! ³² Let this Messiah,^(D) this king of Israel,^(E) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

³⁶ And sitting down, they kept watch^(A) over him there.
