Psalm 145:1-7

Psalm 145^[a]

A psalm of praise. Of David.

¹I will exalt you,^(A) my God the King;^(B)
I will praise your name^(C) for ever and ever.
²Every day I will praise^(D) you
and extol your name^(E) for ever and ever.

³Great^(F) is the Lord and most worthy of praise;^(G)
    his greatness no one can fathom.^(H)
⁴One generation^(I) commends your works to another;
    they tell^(J) of your mighty acts.^(K)
⁵They speak of the glorious splendor^(L) of your majesty—
    and I will meditate on your wonderful works.^[b]^(M)
⁶They tell^(N) of the power of your awesome works—^(O)
    and I will proclaim^(P) your great deeds.^(Q)
⁷They celebrate your abundant goodness^(R)
    and joyfully sing^(S) of your righteousness.^(T)

Proverbs 31:4-7

New International Version

⁴It is not for kings, Lemuel—
    it is not for kings to drink wine,^(A)
    not for rulers to crave beer,
⁵lest they drink^(B) and forget what has been decreed,^(C)
    and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
⁶Let beer be for those who are perishing,
    wine^(D) for those who are in anguish!
⁷Let them drink^(E) and forget their poverty
    and remember their misery no more.

John 19:1-16

New International Version

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified^(A)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.^(B) ²The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe ³and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”^(C) And they slapped him in the face.^(D)

⁴Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out^(E) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”^(F) ⁵When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,^(G) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

⁶As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.^(H) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”^(I)

⁷The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,^(J) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”^(K)

⁸When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, ⁹and he went back inside the palace.^(L) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.^(M) ¹⁰“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

¹¹Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.^(N) Therefore the one who handed me over to you^(O) is guilty of a greater sin.”

¹²From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king^(P) opposes Caesar.”

¹³When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat^(Q) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic^(R) is Gabbatha). ¹⁴It was the day of Preparation^(S) of the Passover; it was about noon.^(T)

“Here is your king,”^(U) Pilate said to the Jews.

¹⁵But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

¹⁶Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.^(V)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

Revelation 18:1-8

Lament Over Fallen Babylon

18 After this I saw another angel^(A) coming down from heaven.^(B) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.^(C) ²With a mighty voice he shouted:

“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’^[a]^(D)
    She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,^(E)
    a haunt for every unclean bird,
    a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.^(F)
³For all the nations have drunk
    the maddening wine of her adulteries.^(G)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,^(H)
    and the merchants of the earth grew rich^(I) from her excessive luxuries.”^(J)

Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment

⁴Then I heard another voice from heaven say:

“‘Come out of her, my people,’^[b]^(K)
    so that you will not share in her sins,
    so that you will not receive any of her plagues;^(L)
⁵for her sins are piled up to heaven,^(M)
    and God has remembered^(N) her crimes.
⁶Give back to her as she has given;
    pay her back^(O) double^(P) for what she has done.
    Pour her a double portion from her own cup.^(Q)
⁷Give her as much torment and grief
    as the glory and luxury she gave herself.^(R)
In her heart she boasts,
    ‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;^[c]
    I will never mourn.’^(S)
⁸Therefore in one day^(T) her plagues will overtake her:
    death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,^(U)
    for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
