Psalm 142

Psalm 142^[a]

A maskil^[b] of David. When he was in the cave.^(A) A prayer.

¹I cry aloud^(B) to the Lord;
I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy.^(C)
²I pour out before him my complaint;^(D)
before him I tell my trouble.^(E)

³When my spirit grows faint^(F) within me,
    it is you who watch over my way.
In the path where I walk
    people have hidden a snare for me.
⁴Look and see, there is no one at my right hand;
    no one is concerned for me.
I have no refuge;^(G)
    no one cares^(H) for my life.

⁵I cry to you, Lord;
I say, “You are my refuge,^(I)
my portion^(J) in the land of the living.”^(K)

⁶Listen to my cry,^(L)
    for I am in desperate need;^(M)
rescue me^(N) from those who pursue me,
    for they are too strong^(O) for me.
⁷Set me free from my prison,^(P)
    that I may praise your name.^(Q)
Then the righteous will gather about me
    because of your goodness to me.^(R)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

⁶“I have revealed you^[a]^(A) to those whom you gave me^(B) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. ⁷Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. ⁸For I gave them the words you gave me^(C) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,^(D) and they believed that you sent me.^(E) ⁹I pray for them.^(F) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,^(G) for they are yours. ¹⁰All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.^(H) And glory has come to me through them. ¹¹I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,^(I) and I am coming to you.^(J) Holy Father, protect them by the power of^[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one^(K) as we are one.^(L) ¹²While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by^[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost^(M) except the one doomed to destruction^(N) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.^(O)

¹³“I am coming to you now,^(P) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy^(Q) within them. ¹⁴I have given them your word and the world has hated them,^(R) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.^(S) ¹⁵My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.^(T) ¹⁶They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.^(U) ¹⁷Sanctify them by^[d] the truth; your word is truth.^(V) ¹⁸As you sent me into the world,^(W) I have sent them into the world.^(X) ¹⁹For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.^(Y)

Harvesting the Earth and Trampling the Winepress

¹⁴I looked, and there before me was a white cloud,^(A) and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man^[a]^(B) with a crown^(C) of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. ¹⁵Then another angel came out of the temple^(D) and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle^(E) and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest^(F) of the earth is ripe.” ¹⁶So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

¹⁷Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle.^(G) ¹⁸Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar^(H) and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle^(I) and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” ¹⁹The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath.^(J) ²⁰They were trampled in the winepress^(K) outside the city,^(L) and blood^(M) flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.^[b]
