⁸ But my eyes are turned toward you, O God, my Lord;
    in you I seek refuge; do not leave me defenseless.^(A)

¹⁷ When the poor and needy seek water,
    and there is none,
    and their tongue is parched with thirst,
I the Lord will answer them,
    I the God of Israel will not forsake them.^(A)

¹⁶ Turn to me and be gracious to me,
    for I am lonely and afflicted.^(B)
17 Relieve the troubles of my heart,
    and bring me^[a] out of my distress.^(C)

Happy are all who take refuge in him.^(A)

³ For the enemy has pursued me,
    crushing my life to the ground,
    making me sit in darkness like those long dead.
⁴ Therefore my spirit faints within me;
    my heart within me is appalled.^(A)
