¹⁴ He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.^(A)

⁴ But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared,^{(A) 5} he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water^[a] of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.^{(B) 6} This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.^{(C) 8} The saying is sure.

I desire that you insist on these things, so that those who have come to believe in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works; these things are excellent and profitable to everyone.^(D)

²¹ She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”^(A)

¹⁵ And the Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to you, but deliver us this day!”^{(A) 16} So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord, and he could no longer bear to see Israel suffer.^(B)
