² But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears?

For he is like a refiner’s fire and like washers’ soap;^{(A) 3} he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness.^[a](B)

⁴⁹ So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous^{(A) 50} and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.^(B)

²³ Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; go away from me, you who behave lawlessly.’^(A)

¹² His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”^(A)

¹⁸ Mortal, the house of Israel has become dross to me; all of them, silver,^[a] bronze, tin, iron, and lead. In the smelter they have become dross.^{(A) 19} Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have all become dross, I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. ²⁰ As one gathers silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin into a smelter, to blow the fire upon them in order to melt them, so I will gather you in my anger and in my wrath, and I will put you in and melt you. ²¹ I will gather you and blow upon you with the fire of my wrath, and you shall be melted within it. ²² As silver is melted in a smelter, so you shall be melted in it, and you shall know that I the Lord have poured out my wrath upon you.^(B)
