The Testing of Jesus

4 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the devil. ² He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was famished.^{(A) 3} The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”^{(B) 4} But he answered, “It is written,

⁵ Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple,^{(D) 6} saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

⁷ Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”^(F)

⁸ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, ⁹ and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written,

¹¹ Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.^(H)

²⁹ If anyone should rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living under the care of the Lord your God, but the lives of your enemies he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling.

17 Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will set out and pursue David tonight. ² I will come upon him while he is weary and discouraged and throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him will flee. I will strike down only the king,^{(A) 3} and I will bring all the people back to you as a bride comes home to her husband. You seek the life of only one man,^[a] and all the people will be at peace.”

¹⁴ Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,^(A)
