¹⁷ It is not the dead^(A) who praise the Lord,
    those who go down to the place of silence;

¹⁷ Let me not be put to shame,^(A) Lord,
    for I have cried out to you;
but let the wicked be put to shame
    and be silent^(B) in the realm of the dead.

⁵ Among the dead no one proclaims your name.
    Who praises you from the grave?^(A)

¹⁰ Do you show your wonders to the dead?
    Do their spirits rise up and praise you?^(A)
11 Is your love declared in the grave,
    your faithfulness^(B) in Destruction^[a]?
¹² Are your wonders known in the place of darkness,
    or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?

¹⁸ For the grave^(A) cannot praise you,
    death cannot sing your praise;^(B)
those who go down to the pit^(C)
    cannot hope for your faithfulness.
¹⁹ The living, the living—they praise^(D) you,
    as I am doing today;
parents tell their children^(E)
    about your faithfulness.

⁹ “What is gained if I am silenced,
    if I go down to the pit?^(A)
Will the dust praise you?
    Will it proclaim your faithfulness?^(B)

⁹ He will guard the feet^(A) of his faithful servants,^(B)
    but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.^(C)
