Psalm 107:39-43

New International Version

³⁹Then their numbers decreased,^(A) and they were humbled^(B)
    by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
⁴⁰he who pours contempt on nobles^(C)
    made them wander in a trackless waste.^(D)
⁴¹But he lifted the needy^(E) out of their affliction
    and increased their families like flocks.^(F)
⁴²The upright see and rejoice,^(G)
    but all the wicked shut their mouths.^(H)

The Guards Mock Jesus^(A)

⁶³The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. ⁶⁴They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” ⁶⁵And they said many other insulting things to him.^(B)

⁶⁶At daybreak the council^(F) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,^(G) and Jesus was led before them. ⁶⁷“If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, ⁶⁸and if I asked you, you would not answer.^(H) ⁶⁹But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”^(I)

⁷⁰They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”^(J)

He replied, “You say that I am.”^(K)

Hebrews 12:4-13

God Disciplines His Children

⁴In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.^(A) ⁵And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart^(B) when he rebukes you,
⁶because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,^(C)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”^[a]^(D)

⁷Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.^(E) For what children are not disciplined by their father? ⁸If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline^(F)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. ⁹Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits^(G) and live!^(H) ¹⁰They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.^(I) ¹¹No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace^(J) for those who have been trained by it.

¹²Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.^(K) ¹³“Make level paths for your feet,”^[b]^(L) so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.^(M)
