Psalm 107:17-22

¹⁷Some became fools^(A) through their rebellious ways^(B)
    and suffered affliction^(C) because of their iniquities.

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives^(A)

³⁹Jesus went out as usual^(B) to the Mount of Olives,^(C) and his disciples followed him. ⁴⁰On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”^(D) ⁴¹He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down^(E) and prayed, ⁴²“Father, if you are willing, take this cup^(F) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”^(G) ⁴³An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.^(H) ⁴⁴And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.^[a]

⁴⁵When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. ⁴⁶“Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”^(I)

¹⁷By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.^(A) He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, ¹⁸even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”^[a]^(B) ¹⁹Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,^(C) and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.

²⁰By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.^(D)

²¹By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons,^(E) and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.

²²By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.^(F)

²³By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born,^(G) because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.^(H)
