^39 (A)Why should a living man complain,
    a man, about the punishment of his sins?

²² “How long, O ^(A)simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will ^(B)scoffers delight in their scoffing
    and fools ^(C)hate knowledge?

^19 (A)Your evil will chastise you,
    and ^(B)your apostasy will reprove you.
Know and see that it is evil and ^(C)bitter
    for ^(D)you to forsake the Lord your God;
    the fear of me is not in you,
declares the Lord God of hosts.

⁶ Behold, ^(A)it is written before me:
    ^(B)“I will not keep silent, but I will repay;
^(C)I will indeed repay into their lap
⁷     both your iniquities ^(D)and your fathers' iniquities together,
says the Lord;
^(E)because they made offerings on the mountains
    ^(F)and insulted me on the hills,
I will measure into their lap
    payment for their former deeds.”^[a]

¹⁷ Because of the iniquity of his ^(A)unjust gain I was angry,
    I struck him; I hid my face and was angry,
    but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart.
¹⁸ I have seen his ways, ^(B)but I will heal him;
    I will lead him ^(C)and restore comfort to him and his mourners,

⁷ and I have seen among ^(A)the simple,
    I have perceived among the youths,
    a young man ^(B)lacking sense,

⁶ The stupid man cannot know;
    the fool cannot understand this:

38 O Lord, ^(B)rebuke me not in your anger,
    nor discipline me in your wrath!
² For your ^(C)arrows have sunk into me,
    and your hand ^(D)has come down on me.
