⁶ And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were ^(A)weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. ^7 (B)When Phinehas ^(C)the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand ⁸ and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped.

^12 (A)Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They ^(B)turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become ^(C)devoted for destruction.^[a] I will be with you no more, unless you destroy ^(D)the devoted things from among you.

¹⁴ The name of the slain man of Israel, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of a father's house belonging to the Simeonites. ¹⁵ And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of ^(A)Zur, who was the tribal head of a father's house in Midian.

¹² He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, ^(A)for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” ¹³ Nevertheless, the men rowed hard^[a] to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. ¹⁴ Therefore they called out to the Lord, “O Lord, let us not perish for this man's life, and ^(B)lay not on us innocent blood, ^(C)for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.” ¹⁵ So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, ^(D)and the sea ceased from its raging.

⁴⁰ And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to ^(A)the brook Kishon and ^(B)slaughtered them there.

The Lord Sends Rain

⁴¹ And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.”

¹⁵ you shall surely put the inhabitants of that city to the sword, devoting it to destruction,^[a] all who are in it and its cattle, with the edge of the sword. ¹⁶ You shall gather all its spoil into the midst of its open square and ^(A)burn the city and all its spoil with fire, as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. It shall be a ^(B)heap forever. It shall not be built again. ^17 (C)None of the devoted things shall stick to your hand, ^(D)that the Lord may turn from the fierceness of his anger and show you mercy and have compassion on you and multiply you, ^(E)as he swore to your fathers,

⁹ But you shall kill him. ^(A)Your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. ^10 (B)You shall stone him to death with stones, because he sought to draw you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. ¹¹ And ^(C)all Israel shall hear and fear and never again do any such wickedness as this among you.
