There Is None Who Does Good

To the choirmaster: according to ^(A)Mahalath. A Maskil^[a] of David.

^36 (A)Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; ^(B)whoever does not obey the Son shall not ^(C)see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

²⁹ Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, ^(A)that you believe in him whom ^(B)he has sent.” ³⁰ So they said to him, ^(C)“Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? ^31 (D)Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ^(E)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” ³² Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. ³³ For the bread of God is ^(F)he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” ³⁴ They said to him, ^(G)“Sir, give us this bread always.”

³⁵ Jesus said to them, ^(H)“I am the bread of life; ^(I)whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. ³⁶ But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. ^37 (J)All that ^(K)the Father gives me will come to me, and ^(L)whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

¹⁴ The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are ^(A)folly to him, and ^(B)he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

¹⁹ For ^(A)the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, ^(B)“He catches the wise in their craftiness,” ²⁰ and again, ^(C)“The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”

¹⁴ How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him ^(A)of whom they have never heard?^[a] And how are they to hear ^(B)without someone preaching? ¹⁵ And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ^(C)“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” ¹⁶ But ^(D)they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, ^(E)“Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” ¹⁷ So ^(F)faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

¹⁸ They ^(A)are darkened in their understanding, ^(B)alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to ^(C)their hardness of heart.
