Psalm 9[a][b]

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Death of the Son.” A psalm of David.

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;(A)
    I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.(B)
I will be glad and rejoice(C) in you;
    I will sing the praises(D) of your name,(E) O Most High.

My enemies turn back;
    they stumble and perish before you.
For you have upheld my right(F) and my cause,(G)
    sitting enthroned(H) as the righteous judge.(I)
You have rebuked the nations(J) and destroyed the wicked;
    you have blotted out their name(K) for ever and ever.
Endless ruin has overtaken my enemies,
    you have uprooted their cities;(L)
    even the memory of them(M) has perished.

The Lord reigns forever;(N)
    he has established his throne(O) for judgment.
He rules the world in righteousness(P)
    and judges the peoples with equity.(Q)
The Lord is a refuge(R) for the oppressed,(S)
    a stronghold in times of trouble.(T)
10 Those who know your name(U) trust in you,
    for you, Lord, have never forsaken(V) those who seek you.(W)

11 Sing the praises(X) of the Lord, enthroned in Zion;(Y)
    proclaim among the nations(Z) what he has done.(AA)
12 For he who avenges blood(AB) remembers;
    he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.(AC)

13 Lord, see how my enemies(AD) persecute me!
    Have mercy(AE) and lift me up from the gates of death,(AF)
14 that I may declare your praises(AG)
    in the gates of Daughter Zion,(AH)
    and there rejoice in your salvation.(AI)

15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;(AJ)
    their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.(AK)
16 The Lord is known by his acts of justice;
    the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.[c](AL)
17 The wicked go down to the realm of the dead,(AM)
    all the nations that forget God.(AN)
18 But God will never forget the needy;
    the hope(AO) of the afflicted(AP) will never perish.

19 Arise,(AQ) Lord, do not let mortals triumph;(AR)
    let the nations be judged(AS) in your presence.
20 Strike them with terror,(AT) Lord;
    let the nations know they are only mortal.(AU)

20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded[a] to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine,(A) he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked(B) and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.

24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said,

“Cursed(C) be Canaan!(D)
    The lowest of slaves
    will he be to his brothers.(E)

26 He also said,

“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem!(F)
    May Canaan be the slave(G) of Shem.
27 May God extend Japheth’s[b] territory;(H)
    may Japheth live in the tents of Shem,(I)
    and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.”

28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died.(J)

The Table of Nations

10 This is the account(K) of Shem, Ham and Japheth,(L) Noah’s sons,(M) who themselves had sons after the flood.

The Japhethites(N)

The sons[c] of Japheth:

Gomer,(O) Magog,(P) Madai, Javan,(Q) Tubal,(R) Meshek(S) and Tiras.

The sons of Gomer:

Ashkenaz,(T) Riphath and Togarmah.(U)

The sons of Javan:

Elishah,(V) Tarshish,(W) the Kittites(X) and the Rodanites.[d] (From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.)(Y)

The Hamites(Z)

The sons of Ham:

Cush,(AA) Egypt, Put(AB) and Canaan.(AC)

The sons of Cush:

Seba,(AD) Havilah,(AE) Sabtah, Raamah(AF) and Sabteka.

The sons of Raamah:

Sheba(AG) and Dedan.(AH)

Cush was the father[e] of Nimrod,(AI) who became a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty(AJ) hunter(AK) before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon,(AL) Uruk,(AM) Akkad and Kalneh,(AN) in[f] Shinar.[g](AO) 11 From that land he went to Assyria,(AP) where he built Nineveh,(AQ) Rehoboth Ir,[h] Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city.

13 Egypt was the father of

the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, 14 Pathrusites, Kasluhites (from whom the Philistines(AR) came) and Caphtorites.(AS)

15 Canaan(AT) was the father of

Sidon(AU) his firstborn,[i](AV) and of the Hittites,(AW) 16 Jebusites,(AX) Amorites,(AY) Girgashites,(AZ) 17 Hivites,(BA) Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites,(BB) Zemarites and Hamathites.(BC)

Later the Canaanite(BD) clans scattered 19 and the borders of Canaan(BE) reached from Sidon(BF) toward Gerar(BG) as far as Gaza,(BH) and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim,(BI) as far as Lasha.

20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

The Semites(BJ)

21 Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was[j] Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.(BK)

22 The sons of Shem:

Elam,(BL) Ashur,(BM) Arphaxad,(BN) Lud and Aram.(BO)

23 The sons of Aram:

Uz,(BP) Hul, Gether and Meshek.[k]

24 Arphaxad was the father of[l] Shelah,

and Shelah the father of Eber.(BQ)

25 Two sons were born to Eber:

One was named Peleg,[m] because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.

26 Joktan was the father of

Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal,(BR) Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba,(BS) 29 Ophir,(BT) Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan.

30 The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.

31 These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

32 These are the clans of Noah’s sons,(BU) according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth(BV) after the flood.

Saul Takes His Life(A)

10 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.

Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.”

But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.

When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. 10 They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.(B)

11 When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead(C) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

13 Saul died(D) because he was unfaithful(E) to the Lord; he did not keep(F) the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium(G) for guidance, 14 and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned(H) the kingdom(I) over to David son of Jesse.

Blessings and Woes(A)

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(B) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(C) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(D)

20 Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
    for yours is the kingdom of God.(E)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.(F)
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.(G)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
    when they exclude you(H) and insult you(I)
    and reject your name as evil,
        because of the Son of Man.(J)

23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,(K) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.(L)

24 “But woe to you who are rich,(M)
    for you have already received your comfort.(N)
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.(O)
Woe to you who laugh now,
    for you will mourn and weep.(P)
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
    for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.(Q)

Love for Enemies(R)

27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,(S) 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(T) 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.(U) 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.(V)

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?(W) Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?(X) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them,(Y) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children(Z) of the Most High,(AA) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful,(AB) just as your Father(AC) is merciful.

Judging Others(AD)

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(AE) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(AF) 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.(AG) For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(AH)

39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?(AI) 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(AJ)

41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit(AK)

43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.(AL) People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(AM)

The Wise and Foolish Builders(AN)

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(AO) and do not do what I say?(AP) 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,(AQ) I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
