11 (A)I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and [a]bear young; I will make you inhabited as in former times, and do (B)better for you than at your beginnings. (C)Then you shall know that I am the Lord. 12 Yes, I will cause men to walk on you, My people Israel; (D)they shall take possession of you, and you shall be their inheritance; no more shall you (E)bereave them of children.

13 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Because they say to you, (F)‘You devour men and bereave your nation of children, 14 therefore you shall devour men no more, nor bereave your nation anymore,” says the Lord God. 15 (G)“Nor will I let you hear the taunts of the nations anymore, nor bear the reproach of the peoples anymore, nor shall you cause your nation to stumble anymore,” says the Lord God.’ ”

The Renewal of Israel

16 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 17 “Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, (H)they defiled it by their own ways and deeds; to Me their way was like (I)the uncleanness of a woman in her customary impurity. 18 Therefore I poured out My fury on them (J)for the blood they had shed on the land, and for their idols with which they had defiled it. 19 So I (K)scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed throughout the countries; I judged them (L)according to their ways and their deeds. 20 When they came to the nations, wherever they went, they (M)profaned My holy name—when they said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they have gone out of His land.’ 21 But I had concern (N)for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went.

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, (O)but for My holy name’s sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went. 23 And I will sanctify My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord,” says the Lord God, “when I am (P)hallowed in you before their eyes. 24 For (Q)I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. 25 (R)Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you (S)from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a (T)new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My (U)Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. 28 (V)Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; (W)you shall be My people, and I will be your God. 29 I will (X)deliver you from all your uncleannesses. (Y)I will call for the grain and multiply it, and (Z)bring no famine upon you. 30 (AA)And I will multiply the fruit of your trees and the increase of your fields, so that you need never again bear the reproach of famine among the nations. 31 Then (AB)you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good; and you (AC)will [b]loathe yourselves in your own sight, for your iniquities and your abominations. 32 (AD)Not for your sake do I do this,” says the Lord God, “let it be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel!”

33 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, (AE)and the ruins shall be rebuilt. 34 The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass by. 35 So they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like the garden of (AF)Eden; and the wasted, desolate, and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ 36 Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, the Lord, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. (AG)I, the Lord, have spoken it, and I will do it.

37 ‘Thus says the Lord God: (AH)“I will also let the house of Israel inquire of Me to do this for them: I will (AI)increase their men like a flock. 38 Like a [c]flock offered as holy sacrifices, like the flock at Jerusalem on its [d]feast days, so shall the ruined cities be filled with flocks of men. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” ’ ”

Israel’s Restoration Assured

16 Again the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman’s monthly uncleanness(H) in my sight.(I) 18 So I poured out(J) my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. 19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered(K) through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions.(L) 20 And wherever they went among the nations they profaned(M) my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’(N) 21 I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.(O)

22 “Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name,(P) which you have profaned(Q) among the nations where you have gone.(R) 23 I will show the holiness of my great name,(S) which has been profaned(T) among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,(U) declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy(V) through you before their eyes.(W)

24 “‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.(X) 25 I will sprinkle(Y) clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse(Z) you from all your impurities(AA) and from all your idols.(AB) 26 I will give you a new heart(AC) and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone(AD) and give you a heart of flesh.(AE) 27 And I will put my Spirit(AF) in you and move you to follow my decrees(AG) and be careful to keep my laws.(AH) 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people,(AI) and I will be your God.(AJ) 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine(AK) upon you. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine.(AL) 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices.(AM) 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed(AN) and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!(AO)

33 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse(AP) you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins(AQ) will be rebuilt.(AR) 34 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. 35 They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden;(AS) the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.(AT) 36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’(AU)

37 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Once again I will yield to Israel’s plea(AV) and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep,(AW) 38 as numerous as the flocks for offerings(AX) at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(AY)

10 And he carried me away (A)in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me (B)the [a]great city, the [b]holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11 (C)having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. 12 Also she had a great and high wall with (D)twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 13 (E)three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.

14 Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and (F)on them were the [c]names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he who talked with me (G)had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand [d]furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. 17 Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. 18 The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 (H)The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve (I)pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. (J)And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

The Glory of the New Jerusalem

22 (K)But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 (L)The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine [e]in it, for the [f]glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. 24 (M)And the nations [g]of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor [h]into it. 25 (N)Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (O)(there shall be no night there). 26 (P)And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into [i]it. 27 But (Q)there shall by no means enter it anything [j]that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s (R)Book of Life.

10 And he carried me away(A) in the Spirit(B) to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.(C) 11 It shone with the glory of God,(D) and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper,(E) clear as crystal.(F) 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates,(G) and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.(H) 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations,(I) and on them were the names of the twelve apostles(J) of the Lamb.

15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod(K) of gold to measure the city, its gates(L) and its walls. 16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia[a] in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17 The angel measured the wall using human(M) measurement, and it was 144 cubits[b] thick.[c] 18 The wall was made of jasper,(N) and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.(O) 19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone.(P) The first foundation was jasper,(Q) the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby,(R) the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.[d] 21 The twelve gates(S) were twelve pearls,(T) each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.(U)

22 I did not see a temple(V) in the city, because the Lord God Almighty(W) and the Lamb(X) are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God(Y) gives it light,(Z) and the Lamb(AA) is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.(AB) 25 On no day will its gates(AC) ever be shut,(AD) for there will be no night there.(AE) 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.(AF) 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful,(AG) but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.(AH)

Assurance of Zion’s Salvation

62 For Zion’s sake I will not [c]hold My peace,

Until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
And her salvation as a lamp that burns.
(R)The Gentiles shall see your righteousness,

(T)You shall be called by a new name,
Which the mouth of the Lord will name.
You shall also be (U)a crown of glory
In the hand of the Lord,

In the hand of your God.
(V)You shall no longer be termed (W)Forsaken,[d]
Nor shall your land any more be termed (X)Desolate;[e]
But you shall be called [f]Hephzibah, and your land [g]Beulah;
For the Lord delights in you,
And your land shall be married.
For as a young man marries a virgin,
So shall your sons marry you;
And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
(Y)So shall your God rejoice over you.

(Z)I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem;
They shall [h]never hold their peace day or night.
You who [i]make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent,
And give Him no rest till He establishes
And till He makes Jerusalem (AA)a praise in the earth.

The Lord has sworn by His right hand

Says the Lord.

21 “As(B) for Me,” says the Lord, “this is My covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants’ descendants,” says the Lord, “from this time and forevermore.”

The Gentiles Bless Zion

60 Arise, (C)shine;
For your light has come!
And (D)the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.
For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness the people;
But the Lord will arise over you,
And His glory will be seen upon you.
The (E)Gentiles shall come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

“Lift(F) up your eyes all around, and see:
They all gather together, (G)they come to you;
Your sons shall come from afar,
And your daughters shall be nursed at your side.
Then you shall see and become radiant,
And your heart shall swell with joy;
Because (H)the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you,
The wealth of the Gentiles shall come to you.
The multitude of camels shall cover your land,
The dromedaries of Midian and (I)Ephah;
All those from (J)Sheba shall come;
They shall bring (K)gold and incense,
And they shall proclaim the praises of the Lord.
All the flocks of (L)Kedar shall be gathered together to you,
The rams of Nebaioth shall minister to you;
They shall ascend with (M)acceptance on My altar,
And (N)I will glorify the house of My glory.

“Who are these who fly like a cloud,
And like doves to their roosts?
(O)Surely the coastlands shall wait for Me;
And the ships of Tarshish will come first,
(P)To bring your sons from afar,
(Q)Their silver and their gold with them,
To the name of the Lord your God,
And to the Holy One of Israel,
(R)Because He has glorified you.

10 “The(S) sons of foreigners shall build up your walls,
(T)And their kings shall minister to you;
For (U)in My wrath I struck you,
(V)But in My favor I have had mercy on you.
11 Therefore your gates (W)shall be open continually;
They shall not be shut day or night,
That men may bring to you the wealth of the Gentiles,
And their kings in procession.
12 (X)For the nation and kingdom which will not serve you shall perish,
And those nations shall be utterly ruined.

13 “The(Y) glory of Lebanon shall come to you,
The cypress, the pine, and the box tree together,
To beautify the place of My sanctuary;
And I will make (Z)the place of My feet glorious.
14 Also the sons of those who afflicted you
Shall come (AA)bowing to you,
And all those who despised you shall (AB)fall prostrate at the soles of your feet;
And they shall call you The City of the Lord,
(AC)Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 “Whereas you have been forsaken and hated,
So that no one went through you,
I will make you an eternal excellence,
A joy of many generations.
16 You shall drink the milk of the Gentiles,
(AD)And milk the breast of kings;
You shall know that (AE)I, the Lord, am your Savior
And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

17 “Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
Instead of iron I will bring silver,
Instead of wood, bronze,
And instead of stones, iron.
I will also make your officers peace,
And your magistrates righteousness.
18 Violence shall no longer be heard in your land,
Neither [a]wasting nor destruction within your borders;
But you shall call (AF)your walls Salvation,
And your gates Praise.

God the Glory of His People

19 “The (AG)sun shall no longer be your light by day,
Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you;
But the Lord will be to you an everlasting light,
And (AH)your God your glory.
20 (AI)Your sun shall no longer go down,
Nor shall your moon withdraw itself;
For the Lord will be your everlasting light,
And the days of your mourning shall be ended.
21 (AJ)Also your people shall all be righteous;
(AK)They shall inherit the land forever,
(AL)The branch of My planting,
(AM)The work of My hands,
That I may be glorified.
22 (AN)A little one shall become a thousand,
And a small one a strong nation.
I, the Lord, will hasten it in its time.”

  1. Isaiah 60:9 Or the trading ships

“Enlarge(A) the place of your tent,
And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings;
Do not spare;
Lengthen your cords,
And strengthen your stakes.
For you shall expand to the right and to the left,
And your descendants will (B)inherit the nations,
And make the desolate cities inhabited.

“Do(C) not fear, for you will not be ashamed;
Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame;
For you will forget the shame of your youth,
And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore.
(D)For your Maker is your husband,
The Lord of hosts is His name;
And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;
He is called (E)the God of the whole earth.
For the Lord (F)has called you
Like a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit,
Like a youthful wife when you were refused,”
Says your God.
“For(G) a mere moment I have forsaken you,
But with great mercies (H)I will gather you.
With a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment;
(I)But with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you,”
Says the Lord, your Redeemer.

“For this is like the waters of (J)Noah to Me;
For as I have sworn
That the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth,
So have I sworn
That I would not be angry with (K)you, nor rebuke you.
10 For (L)the mountains shall depart
And the hills be removed,
(M)But My kindness shall not depart from you,
Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,”
Says the Lord, who has mercy on you.

God Will Remember Zion

14 (A)But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me,
And my Lord has forgotten me.”

15 “Can(B) a woman forget her nursing child,
[a]And not have compassion on the son of her womb?
Surely they may forget,
(C)Yet I will not forget you.
16 See, (D)I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
Your walls are continually before Me.
17 Your [b]sons shall make haste;
Your destroyers and those who laid you waste
Shall go away from you.
18 (E)Lift up your eyes, look around and see;
All these gather together and come to you.
As I live,” says the Lord,
“You shall surely clothe yourselves with them all (F)as an ornament,
And bind them on you as a bride does.

19 “For your waste and desolate places,
And the land of your destruction,
(G)Will even now be too small for the inhabitants;
And those who swallowed you up will be far away.
20 (H)The children you will have,
(I)After you have lost the others,
Will say again in your ears,
‘The place is too small for me;
Give me a place where I may dwell.’
21 Then you will say in your heart,
‘Who has begotten these for me,
Since I have lost my children and am desolate,
A captive, and wandering to and fro?
And who has brought these up?
There I was, left alone;
But these, where were they?’ ”

22 (J)Thus says the Lord God:

“Behold, I will lift My hand in an oath to the nations,
And set up My [c]standard for the peoples;
They shall bring your sons in their [d]arms,
And your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders;
23 (K)Kings shall be your foster fathers,
And their queens your nursing mothers;
They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth,
And (L)lick up the dust of your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord,
(M)For they shall not be ashamed who wait for Me.”

24 (N)Shall the prey be taken from the mighty,
Or the captives [e]of the righteous be delivered?

25 But thus says the Lord:

“Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away,
And the prey of the terrible be delivered;
For I will contend with him who contends with you,
And I will save your children.
26 I will (O)feed those who oppress you with their own flesh,
And they shall be drunk with their own (P)blood as with sweet wine.
All flesh (Q)shall know
That I, the Lord, am your Savior,
And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
