Prayer for God’s Mercy upon the Nation.

For the music director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

85 Lord, You showed (A)favor to Your land;
You (B)restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2 You (C)forgave the guilt of Your people;
You (D)covered all their sin. Selah
3 You (E)withdrew all Your fury;
You (F)turned away from Your burning anger.

4 (G)Restore us, God of our salvation,
And (H)cause Your indignation toward us to cease.
5 Will (I)You be angry with us forever?
Will You prolong Your anger to [a]all generations?
6 Will You not [b](J)revive us again,
So that Your people may (K)rejoice in You?
7 Show us Your mercy, Lord,
And (L)grant us Your salvation.

8 [c]I will hear what God the Lord will say;
For He will (M)speak peace to His people, to His godly ones;
And may they not (N)turn back to [d]foolishness.
9 Certainly (O)His salvation is near to those who [e]fear Him,
That (P)glory may dwell in our land.
10 (Q)Graciousness and [f]truth have met together;
(R)Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 [g]Truth (S)sprouts from the earth,
And righteousness looks down from heaven.
12 Indeed, (T)the Lord will give what is good,
And our (U)land will yield its produce.
13 (V)Righteousness will go before Him
And will make His footsteps into a way.

86 (W)Incline Your ear, Lord, and answer me;
For I am (X)afflicted and needy.
2 (Y)Protect my [h]soul, for I am (Z)godly;
You my God, save Your servant who (AA)trusts in You.
3 Be (AB)gracious to me, Lord,
For (AC)I call upon You all day long.
4 Make the soul of Your servant joyful,
For to You, Lord, (AD)I lift up my soul.
5 For You, Lord, are (AE)good, and (AF)ready to forgive,
And (AG)abundant in mercy to all who call upon You.
6 (AH)Listen, Lord, to my prayer;
And give Your attention to the sound of my pleading!
7 On (AI)the day of my trouble I will call upon You,
For (AJ)You will answer me.
8 There is (AK)no one like You among the gods, Lord,
Nor are there any works (AL)like Yours.
9 (AM)All nations whom You have made will come and worship before You, Lord,
And they will glorify Your name.
10 For You are (AN)great, and you (AO)do [i]wondrous deeds;
You alone (AP)are God.

11 (AQ)Teach me Your way, Lord;
I will walk in Your truth;
(AR)Unite my heart to fear Your name.
12 I will (AS)give thanks to You, Lord my God, with all my heart,
And I will glorify Your name forever.
13 For Your graciousness toward me is great,
And You have (AT)saved my soul from the [j]depths of [k]Sheol.

14 God, arrogant men have (AU)risen up against me,
And a gang of violent men have sought my [l]life,
And they have not set You before them.
15 But You, Lord, are a (AV)compassionate and gracious God,
Slow to anger and abundant in mercy and [m]truth.
16 (AW)Turn to me, and be gracious to me;
(AX)Grant Your strength to Your servant,
And save the (AY)son of Your maidservant.
17 (AZ)Show me a sign of good,
That those who hate me may (BA)see it and be ashamed,
Because You, Lord, (BB)have helped me and comforted me.

2 The Lord (BD)loves the gates of Zion
More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob.
3 (BE)Glorious things are spoken of you,
(BF)City of God. Selah
4 “I shall mention [n](BG)Rahab and Babylon [o]among those who know Me;
Behold, Philistia and (BH)Tyre with [p](BI)Cush:
‘This one was born there.’”
5 But of Zion it will be said, “This one and that one were born in her”;
And the Most High Himself will (BJ)establish her.
6 The Lord will count when He (BK)registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah
7 Then those who (BL)sing as well as those who [q](BM)play the flutes will say,
“All my (BN)springs of joy are in you.”

88 Lord, the (BO)God of my salvation,
I have (BP)cried out by day and in the night before You.
2 Let my prayer (BQ)come before You;
(BR)Incline Your ear to my cry!
3 For my (BS)soul has [t]had enough troubles,
And (BT)my life has approached [u]Sheol.
4 I am counted among those who (BU)go down to the pit;
I have become like a man (BV)without strength,
5 [v]Abandoned (BW)among the dead,
Like the slain who lie in the grave,
Whom You no longer remember,
And they are (BX)cut off from Your hand.
6 You have put me in (BY)the lowest pit,
In (BZ)dark places, in the (CA)depths.
7 Your wrath (CB)has rested upon me,
And You have afflicted me with (CC)all Your waves. Selah
8 You have removed (CD)my acquaintances far from me;

10 Will You perform wonders for the dead?

11 Will Your graciousness be declared in the grave,

And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

13 But I, Lord, have cried out (CL)to You for help,
And (CM)in the morning my prayer comes before You.
14 Lord, why (CN)do You reject my soul?
Why do You (CO)hide Your face from me?
15 I was miserable and (CP)about to die from my youth on;
I suffer (CQ)Your terrors; I grow weary.

89 I will (CX)sing of the graciousness of the Lord forever;
To all generations I will (CY)make Your (CZ)faithfulness known with my mouth.
2 For I have said, “(DA)Graciousness will be built up forever;
In the heavens You will establish Your (DB)faithfulness.”
3 “I have made a covenant with (DC)My chosen;
I have (DD)sworn to My servant David,
4 I will establish your [ad](DE)descendants forever
And build up your (DF)throne to all generations.” Selah

5 The (DG)heavens will praise Your wonders, Lord;
Your faithfulness also (DH)in the assembly of the (DI)holy ones.
6 For (DJ)who in the skies is comparable to the Lord?
Who among the [ae](DK)sons of the mighty is like the Lord,
7 A God (DL)greatly feared in the council of the (DM)holy ones,
And (DN)awesome above all those who are around Him?
8 Lord God of armies, (DO)who is like You, mighty [af]Lord?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
9 You rule the surging of the sea;
When its waves rise, You (DP)calm them.
10 You Yourself crushed [ag](DQ)Rahab like one who is slain;

11 The (DS)heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;

And said, “I have [aq]given help to one who is (EI)mighty;

With My holy (EL)oil I have anointed him,
21 With whom (EM)My hand will be established;
My arm also will (EN)strengthen him.
22 The enemy will not [ar]deceive him,
Nor will the [as](EO)son of wickedness afflict him.
23 But I will (EP)crush his adversaries before him,
And strike those who hate him.
24 My (EQ)faithfulness and My favor will be with him,
And in My name his (ER)horn will be exalted.
25 I will also place his hand (ES)on the sea,
And his right hand on the rivers.
26 He will call to Me, ‘You are (ET)my Father,
My God, and the (EU)rock of my salvation.’
27 I will also make him My (EV)firstborn,
The (EW)highest of the kings of the earth.
28 I will maintain My (EX)favor for him forever,
And My (EY)covenant shall be confirmed to him.
29 So I will establish his [at](EZ)descendants forever,
And his (FA)throne (FB)as the days of heaven.

30 “If his sons (FC)abandon My Law
And do not walk in My judgments,
31 If they [au]violate My statutes
And do not keep My commandments,
32 Then I will punish their wrongdoing with the (FD)rod,
And their guilt with [av]afflictions.
33 But I will not [aw]withhold (FE)My favor from him,
Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.
34 I will not [ax]violate My (FF)covenant,
Nor will I (FG)alter [ay]the utterance of My lips.
35 [az]Once I have (FH)sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David.
36 His [ba](FI)descendants shall endure forever,
And his (FJ)throne (FK)as the sun before Me.
37 It shall be established forever (FL)like the moon,
And a (FM)witness in the sky is faithful.” Selah

38 But You have (FN)rejected and (FO)refused,
You have been full of wrath [bb]against Your (FP)anointed.
39 You have [bc](FQ)repudiated the covenant of Your servant;
You have (FR)profaned (FS)his crown [bd]in the dust.
40 You have (FT)broken down all his walls;
You have (FU)brought his strongholds to ruin.
41 (FV)All who pass along the way plunder him;
He has become a (FW)disgrace to his neighbors.
42 You have (FX)exalted the right hand of his adversaries;
You have (FY)made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You also turn back the edge of his sword,
And have (FZ)not made him stand in battle.
44 You have put an end to his [be](GA)splendor
And cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have (GB)shortened the days of his youth;
You have (GC)covered him with shame. Selah

46 (GD)How long, Lord?
Will You hide Yourself forever?
Will Your (GE)wrath burn like fire?
47 (GF)Remember [bf]what my lifespan is;
For what (GG)futility [bg]You have created all the sons of mankind!
48 What man can live and not (GH)see death?
Can he (GI)save his soul from the [bh]power of [bi]Sheol? Selah

49 Where are Your former acts of favor, Lord,
Which You (GJ)swore to David in Your faithfulness?
50 Remember, Lord, the (GK)taunt against Your servants;
[bj]How I carry in my heart the taunts of all the many peoples,
51 With which (GL)Your enemies have taunted, Lord,
With which they have taunted the footsteps of (GM)Your anointed.

1 You, Lord, showed favor to your land;
    you restored the fortunes(A) of Jacob.
2 You forgave(B) the iniquity(C) of your people
    and covered all their sins.[b]
3 You set aside all your wrath(D)
    and turned from your fierce anger.(E)

4 Restore(F) us again, God our Savior,(G)
    and put away your displeasure toward us.
5 Will you be angry with us forever?(H)
    Will you prolong your anger through all generations?
6 Will you not revive(I) us again,
    that your people may rejoice(J) in you?
7 Show us your unfailing love,(K) Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.(L)

8 I will listen to what God the Lord says;
    he promises peace(M) to his people, his faithful servants—
    but let them not turn to folly.(N)
9 Surely his salvation(O) is near those who fear him,
    that his glory(P) may dwell in our land.

10 Love and faithfulness(Q) meet together;
    righteousness(R) and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,

Psalm 86

A prayer of David.

1 Hear me, Lord, and answer(V) me,
    for I am poor and needy.
2 Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
    save your servant who trusts in you.(W)
You are my God; 3 have mercy(X) on me, Lord,
    for I call(Y) to you all day long.
4 Bring joy to your servant, Lord,
    for I put my trust(Z) in you.

5 You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
    abounding in love(AA) to all who call to you.

1 He has founded his city on the holy mountain.(BE)
2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion(BF)
    more than all the other dwellings of Jacob.

3 Glorious things are said of you,
    city of God:[c](BG)
4 “I will record Rahab[d](BH) and Babylon
    among those who acknowledge me—
Philistia(BI) too, and Tyre(BJ), along with Cush[e]—
    and will say, ‘This one was born in Zion.’”[f](BK)
5 Indeed, of Zion it will be said,
    “This one and that one were born in her,
    and the Most High himself will establish her.”
6 The Lord will write in the register(BL) of the peoples:
    “This one was born in Zion.”

7 As they make music(BM) they will sing,

    I am like one without strength.(BT)
5 I am set apart with the dead,

whom you remember no more,

2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.(CV)
3 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
    I have sworn to David my servant,
4 ‘I will establish your line forever
    and make your throne firm through all generations.’”[n](CW)

5 The heavens(CX) praise your wonders, Lord,
    your faithfulness too, in the assembly(CY) of the holy ones.
6 For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?
    Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?(CZ)
7 In the council(DA) of the holy ones(DB) God is greatly feared;
    he is more awesome than all who surround him.(DC)

    You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
    I have raised up a young man from among the people.

    with my sacred oil(EA) I have anointed(EB) him.
21 My hand will sustain him;
    surely my arm will strengthen him.(EC)
22 The enemy will not get the better of him;(ED)
    the wicked will not oppress(EE) him.
23 I will crush his foes before him(EF)
    and strike down his adversaries.(EG)
24 My faithful love will be with him,(EH)
    and through my name his horn[q] will be exalted.
25 I will set his hand over the sea,

30 “If his sons forsake my law
    and do not follow my statutes,
31 if they violate my decrees
    and fail to keep my commands,
32 I will punish their sin with the rod,
    their iniquity with flogging;(ER)
33 but I will not take my love from him,(ES)
    nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant
    or alter what my lips have uttered.(ET)
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
    and I will not lie to David—
36 that his line will continue forever
    and his throne endure before me like the sun;(EU)
37 it will be established forever like the moon,
    the faithful witness in the sky.”(EV)

38 But you have rejected,(EW) you have spurned,
    you have been very angry with your anointed one.
39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant
    and have defiled his crown in the dust.(EX)
40 You have broken through all his walls(EY)
    and reduced his strongholds(EZ) to ruins.
41 All who pass by have plundered(FA) him;
    he has become the scorn of his neighbors.(FB)
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.(FC)
43 Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword
    and have not supported him in battle.(FD)
44 You have put an end to his splendor
    and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short(FE) the days of his youth;
    you have covered him with a mantle of shame.(FF)

46 How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath burn like fire?(FG)

    which in your faithfulness you swore to David?

    how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
51 the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked,
