⁴⁰ Then ^(A)the anger of the Lord was kindled against ^(B)his people,
    and he abhorred his ^(C)heritage;

^7 (A)The Lord has scorned his altar,
    ^(B)disowned his sanctuary;
^(C)he has delivered into the hand of the enemy
    the walls of her palaces;
^(D)they raised a clamor in the house of the Lord
    as on the day of festival.

² The Lord ^(A)looks down from heaven on the children of man,
    to see if there are any who understand,^[a]
    who ^(B)seek after God.

³ They have all turned aside; together they have become ^(C)corrupt;
    there is none who does good,
    not even one.

⁴ Have they no ^(D)knowledge, all the evildoers
    who ^(E)eat up my people as they eat bread
    and ^(F)do not call upon the Lord?

⁵ There they are in great terror,
    for God is with ^(G)the generation of the righteous.
