11 (A)“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a [a]hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and (B)leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and (C)I know My sheep, and (D)am known by My own. 15 (E)As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; (F)and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And (G)other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; (H)and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

17 “Therefore My Father (I)loves Me, (J)because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I (K)have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. (L)This command I have received from My Father.”

19 Therefore (M)there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. 20 And many of them said, (N)“He has a demon and is [b]mad. Why do you listen to Him?”

21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. (O)Can a demon (P)open the eyes of the blind?”

The Shepherd Knows His Sheep

22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple, (Q)in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in [c]doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (R)The works that I do in My Father’s name, they (S)bear witness of Me. 26 But (T)you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, [d]as I said to you. 27 (U)My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 (V)My Father, (W)who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 (X)I and My Father are one.”

Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus

31 Then (Y)the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”

33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for (Z)blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, (AA)make Yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, (AB)‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, (AC)to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture (AD)cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him (AE)whom the Father sanctified and (AF)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ (AG)because I said, ‘I am (AH)the Son of God’? 37 (AI)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, (AJ)believe the works, that you may know and [e]believe (AK)that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39 (AL)Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.

The Believers Beyond Jordan

40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place (AM)where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. 41 Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, (AN)but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.

So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.(D) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd;(E) I know my sheep(F) and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father(G)—and I lay down my life for the sheep.(H) 16 I have other sheep(I) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock(J) and one shepherd.(K) 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life(L)—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.(M) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”(N)

19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided.(O) 20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed(P) and raving mad.(Q) Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.(R) Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”(S)

Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[a] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.(T) 24 The Jews(U) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”(V)

25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you,(W) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,(X) 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.(Y) 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,(Z) and they follow me.(AA) 28 I give them eternal life,(AB) and they shall never perish;(AC) no one will snatch them out of my hand.(AD) 29 My Father, who has given them to me,(AE) is greater than all[b];(AF) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(AG)

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,(AH) 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”(AI)

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law,(AJ) ‘I have said you are “gods”’[c]?(AK) 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God(AL) came—and Scripture cannot be set aside(AM) 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart(AN) as his very own(AO) and sent into the world?(AP) Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?(AQ) 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.(AR) 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”(AS) 39 Again they tried to seize him,(AT) but he escaped their grasp.(AU)

40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan(AV) to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign,(AW) all that John said about this man was true.”(AX) 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.(AY)

God, the True Shepherd

11 ‘For thus says the Lord God: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. 12 As a (A)shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on (B)a cloudy and dark day. 13 And (C)I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land; I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, [a]in the valleys and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14 (D)I will feed them in good pasture, and their fold shall be on the high mountains of Israel. (E)There they shall lie down in a good fold and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 I will feed My flock, and I will make them lie down,” says the Lord God. 16 (F)“I will seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy (G)the fat and the strong, and feed them (H)in judgment.”

17 ‘And as for you, O My flock, thus says the Lord God: (I)“Behold, I shall judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and goats. 18 Is it too little for you to have eaten up the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the [b]residue of your pasture—and to have drunk of the clear waters, that you must foul the residue with your feet? 19 And as for My flock, they eat what you have trampled with your feet, and they drink what you have fouled with your feet.”

20 ‘Therefore thus says the Lord God to them: (J)“Behold, I Myself will judge between the fat and the lean sheep. 21 Because you have pushed with side and shoulder, butted all the weak ones with your horns, and scattered them abroad, 22 therefore I will save My flock, and they shall no longer be a prey; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23 I will establish one (K)shepherd over them, and he shall feed them—(L)My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 And (M)I, the Lord, will be their God, and My servant David (N)a prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken.

25 (O)“I will make a covenant of peace with them, and (P)cause wild beasts to cease from the land; and they (Q)will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. 26 I will make them and the places all around (R)My hill (S)a blessing; and I will (T)cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be (U)showers of blessing. 27 Then (V)the trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase. They shall be safe in their land; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have (W)broken the bands of their yoke and delivered them from the hand of those who (X)enslaved them. 28 And they shall no longer be a prey for the nations, nor shall beasts of the land devour them; but (Y)they shall dwell safely, and no one shall make them afraid. 29 I will raise up for them a (Z)garden[c] of renown, and they shall (AA)no longer be consumed with hunger in the land, (AB)nor bear the shame of the Gentiles anymore. 30 Thus they shall know that (AC)I, the Lord their God, am with them, and they, the house of Israel, are (AD)My people,” says the Lord God.’

31 “You are My (AE)flock, the flock of My pasture; you are men, and I am your God,” says the Lord God.
