John 6:31-71
New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”(A) 32 Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which[a] comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”(B) 34 They said to him, “Sir,[b] give us this bread always.”(C)
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.(D) 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.(E) 37 Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away,(F) 38 for I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.(G) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me but raise it up on the last day.(H) 40 This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day.”(I)
41 Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”(J) 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I will raise that person up on the last day.(K) 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me.(L) 46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.(M) 47 Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life.(N) 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever, and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”(O)
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”(P) 53 So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.(Q) 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day,(R) 55 for my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me and I in them.(S) 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which the ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” 59 He said these things while he was teaching in a synagogue at Capernaum.
The Words of Eternal Life
60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” 61 But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, “Does this offend you?(T) 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?(U) 63 It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But among you there are some who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were the ones who did not believe and who was the one who would betray him.(V) 65 And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.”(W)
66 Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. 67 So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”[c](X) 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.”(Y) 71 He was speaking of Judas son of Simon Iscariot,[d] for he, though one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

New International Version
31 Our ancestors ate the manna(A) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[a]”(B)
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(C) and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(D)
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(E) the bread of life.(F) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(G) in me will never be thirsty.(H) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(I) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(J) not to do my will but to do the will(K) of him who sent me.(L) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(M) but raise them up at the last day.(N) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(O) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(P) and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(Q) whose father and mother we know?(R) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(S)
43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(T) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[b](U) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(V) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(W) 48 I am the bread of life.(X) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(Y) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(Z) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(AA) that came down from heaven.(AB) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(AC)
52 Then the Jews(AD) began to argue sharply among themselves,(AE) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(AF) of the Son of Man(AG) and drink his blood,(AH) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(AI) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(AJ) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(AK) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(AL) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(AM) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(AN)
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(AO) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(AP) ascend to where he was before!(AQ) 63 The Spirit gives life;(AR) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[c] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(AS) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(AT) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(AU)
66 From this time many of his disciples(AV) turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(AW)
68 Simon Peter answered him,(AX) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(AY) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(AZ)
70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(BA) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(BB) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(BC) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(BD)
