and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
23 Therefore (O)he said he would destroy them—
had not Moses, his (P)chosen one,
(Q)stood in the breach before him,
to turn away his wrath from destroying them.
24 Then they (R)despised (S)the pleasant land,
having (T)no faith in his promise.
25 They (U)murmured in their tents,
and did not obey the voice of the Lord.
26 Therefore he (V)raised his hand and swore to them
that he would make them fall in the wilderness,
27 and would make their offspring fall among the nations,
(W)scattering them among the lands.
28 Then they (X)yoked themselves to the (Y)Baal of Peor,
and ate sacrifices offered to (Z)the dead;
29 they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,
and a plague broke out among them.
30 Then (AA)Phinehas stood up and intervened,
and the plague was stayed.
31 And that was (AB)counted to him as righteousness
from generation to generation forever.
32 They (AC)angered him at the waters of Meribah,
and it went ill with Moses on their account,

29 they aroused the Lord’s anger(AC) by their wicked deeds,(AD)
and a plague(AE) broke out among them.
30 But Phinehas(AF) stood up and intervened,
and the plague was checked.(AG)
31 This was credited to him(AH) as righteousness
for endless generations(AI) to come.
32 By the waters of Meribah(AJ) they angered the Lord,
and trouble came to Moses because of them;

And (G)I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’ 15 (H)So I turned and came down from the mountain, and (I)the mountain was burning with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And (J)I looked, and behold, you had sinned against the Lord your God. You had made yourselves a golden[a] calf. (K)You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes. 18 Then I (L)lay prostrate before the Lord (M)as before, forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all the sin that you had committed, (N)in doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke him to anger. 19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure that the Lord bore against you, so that he was ready to destroy you. (O)But the Lord listened to me that time also. 20 And the Lord was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him. And I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. 21 Then (P)I took the sinful thing, the calf that you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust. And I threw the dust of it into the brook that ran down from the mountain.
