The Lord Surrounds His People.

A Song of Ascents.

125 Those who trust in the Lord
Are like Mount Zion, which (A)cannot be moved but (B)remains forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
So (C)the Lord surrounds His people
(D)From this time and forever.
For the (E)scepter of wickedness will not rest upon the [a]land of the righteous,
So that the righteous (F)will not extend their hands to do wrong.

(G)Do good, Lord, to those who are good
And to those who are (H)upright in their hearts.
But as for those who (I)turn aside to their (J)crooked ways,
The Lord will lead them away with those who (K)practice injustice.
(L)Peace be upon Israel.

Thanksgiving for Return from Captivity.

A Song of Ascents.

126 When the Lord (M)brought back [b]the captives of Zion,
We were (N)like those who dream.
Then our (O)mouth was filled with laughter
And our (P)tongue with joyful shouting;
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has (Q)done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
We are (R)joyful.

Restore our fortunes, Lord,
As the [c](S)streams in the [d]South.
Those who sow in (T)tears shall harvest with (U)joyful shouting.
One who goes here and there weeping, carrying his bag of seed,
Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

Prosperity Comes from the Lord.

A Song of Ascents, of Solomon.

127 Unless the Lord (V)builds a house,
They who build it labor in vain;
Unless the Lord (W)guards a city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is futile for you to rise up early,
To [e]stay up late,
To (X)eat the bread of painful labor;
This is how He gives to His (Y)beloved (Z)sleep.

Behold, (AA)children are a [f]gift of the Lord,
The (AB)fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a (AC)warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
(AD)Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
(AE)They will not be ashamed
When they (AF)speak with their enemies (AG)in the gate.

Blessedness of the Fear of the Lord.

A Song of Ascents.

128 (AH)Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
Who (AI)walks in His ways.
When you (AJ)eat the (AK)fruit of the labor of your hands,
You will be happy and (AL)it will go well for you.
Your wife will be like a (AM)fruitful vine
[g]Within your house,
Your children like (AN)olive plants
Around your table.
Behold, for so shall a man
Who fears the Lord be blessed.

(AO)The Lord bless you (AP)from Zion,
And may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
Indeed, may you see your (AQ)children’s children.
(AR)Peace be upon Israel!

Prayer for the Overthrow of Zion’s Enemies.

A Song of Ascents.

129 [h]Many times they have (AS)attacked me from my (AT)youth up,”
(AU)Let Israel say,
[i]Many times they have attacked me from my youth up;
Yet they have (AV)not prevailed against me.
The plowers plowed upon my back;
They lengthened their furrows.”
The Lord (AW)is righteous;
He has cut up the (AX)ropes of the wicked.

May all who (AY)hate Zion
Be (AZ)put to shame and turned backward;
May they be like (BA)grass upon the housetops,
Which withers before it [j]grows up;
With which the harvester does not fill his [k]hand,
Or the binder of sheaves his [l](BB)arms;
Nor do those who pass by say,
“The (BC)blessing of the Lord be upon you;
We bless you in the name of the Lord.”

  2. Psalm 126:1 Or those restored to health
  3. Psalm 126:4 Or Bring back our captives
  4. Psalm 127:2 Or eat— / for while they sleep he provides for

125 They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.

As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.

For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.

Do good, O Lord, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts.

As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

126 When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.

The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

Turn again our captivity, O Lord, as the streams in the south.

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

127 Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

128 Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.

For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord.

The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.

Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel.

129 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:

Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.

The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

The Lord is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.

Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.

Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:

Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.

Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the Lord be upon you: we bless you in the name of the Lord.
