(A)They committed harlotry in Egypt,
They committed harlotry in (B)their youth;
Their breasts were there embraced,
Their virgin bosom was there pressed.
Their names: [a]Oholah the elder and [b]Oholibah (C)her sister;
(D)They were Mine,
And they bore sons and daughters.
As for their names,
Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem is Oholibah.

The Older Sister, Samaria

“Oholah played the harlot even though she was Mine;
And she lusted for her lovers, the neighboring (E)Assyrians,
Who were clothed in purple,
Captains and rulers,
All of them desirable young men,
Horsemen riding on horses.
Thus she committed her harlotry with them,
All of them choice men of Assyria;
And with all for whom she lusted,
With all their idols, she defiled herself.
She has never given up her harlotry brought (F)from Egypt,
For in her youth they had lain with her,
Pressed her virgin bosom,
And poured out their immorality upon her.

“Therefore I have delivered her
Into the hand of her lovers,
Into the hand of the (G)Assyrians,
For whom she lusted.
10 They uncovered her nakedness,
Took away her sons and daughters,
And slew her with the sword;
She became a byword among women,
For they had executed judgment on her.

The Younger Sister, Jerusalem

11 “Now (H)although her sister Oholibah saw this, (I)she became more corrupt in her lust than she, and in her harlotry more corrupt than her sister’s harlotry.

12 “She lusted for the neighboring (J)Assyrians,
(K)Captains and rulers,
Clothed most gorgeously,
Horsemen riding on horses,
All of them desirable young men.
13 Then I saw that she was defiled;
Both took the same way.
14 But she increased her harlotry;
She looked at men portrayed on the wall,
Images of (L)Chaldeans portrayed in vermilion,
15 Girded with belts around their waists,
Flowing turbans on their heads,
All of them looking like captains,
In the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea,
The land of their nativity.
16 (M)As soon as her eyes saw them,
She lusted for them
And sent (N)messengers to them in Chaldea.

17 “Then the [c]Babylonians came to her, into the bed of love,
And they defiled her with their immorality;
So she was defiled by them, (O)and alienated herself from them.
18 She revealed her harlotry and uncovered her nakedness.
Then (P)I (Q)alienated Myself from her,
As I had alienated Myself from her sister.

19 “Yet she multiplied her harlotry
In calling to remembrance the days of her youth,
(R)When she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.
20 For she lusted for her [d]paramours,
Whose flesh is like the flesh of donkeys,
And whose issue is like the issue of horses.
21 Thus you called to remembrance the lewdness of your youth,
When the (S)Egyptians pressed your bosom
Because of your youthful breasts.

Judgment on Jerusalem

22 “Therefore, Oholibah, thus says the Lord God:

(T)‘Behold, I will stir up your lovers against you,
From whom you have alienated yourself,
And I will bring them against you from every side:
23 The Babylonians,
All the Chaldeans,
(U)Pekod, Shoa, Koa,
(V)All the Assyrians with them,
All of them desirable young men,
Governors and rulers,
Captains and men of renown,
All of them riding on horses.
24 And they shall come against you
With chariots, wagons, and war-horses,
With a horde of people.
They shall array against you
Buckler, shield, and helmet all around.

‘I will delegate judgment to them,
And they shall judge you according to their judgments.
25 I will set My (W)jealousy against you,
And they shall deal furiously with you;
They shall remove your nose and your ears,
And your remnant shall fall by the sword;
They shall take your sons and your daughters,
And your remnant shall be devoured by fire.
26 (X)They shall also strip you of your clothes
And take away your beautiful jewelry.

27 ‘Thus (Y)I will make you cease your lewdness and your (Z)harlotry
Brought from the land of Egypt,
So that you will not lift your eyes to them,
Nor remember Egypt anymore.’

28 “For thus says the Lord God: ‘Surely I will deliver you into the hand of (AA)those you hate, into the hand of those (AB)from whom you alienated yourself. 29 (AC)They will deal hatefully with you, take away all you have worked for, and (AD)leave you naked and bare. The nakedness of your harlotry shall be uncovered, both your lewdness and your harlotry. 30 I will do these things to you because you have (AE)gone as a harlot after the Gentiles, because you have become defiled by their idols. 31 You have walked in the way of your sister; therefore I will put her (AF)cup in your hand.’

32 “Thus says the Lord God:

‘You shall drink of your sister’s cup,
The deep and wide one;
(AG)You shall be laughed to scorn
And held in derision;
It contains much.
33 You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow,
The cup of horror and desolation,
The cup of your sister Samaria.
34 You shall (AH)drink and drain it,
You shall break its [e]shards,
And tear at your own breasts;
For I have spoken,’
Says the Lord God.

35 “Therefore thus says the Lord God:

‘Because you (AI)have forgotten Me and (AJ)cast Me behind your back,
Therefore you shall bear the penalty
Of your lewdness and your harlotry.’ ”

Both Sisters Judged

36 The Lord also said to me: “Son of man, will you (AK)judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then (AL)declare to them their abominations. 37 For they have committed adultery, and (AM)blood is on their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols, and even sacrificed their sons (AN)whom they bore to Me, passing them through the fire, to devour them. 38 Moreover they have done this to Me: They have (AO)defiled My sanctuary on the same day and (AP)profaned My Sabbaths. 39 For after they had slain their children for their idols, on the same day they came into My sanctuary to profane it; and indeed (AQ)thus they have done in the midst of My house.

40 “Furthermore you sent for men to come from afar, (AR)to whom a messenger was sent; and there they came. And you (AS)washed yourself for them, (AT)painted your eyes, and adorned yourself with ornaments. 41 You sat on a stately (AU)couch, with a table prepared before it, (AV)on which you had set My incense and My oil. 42 The sound of a carefree multitude was with her, and [f]Sabeans were brought from the wilderness with men of the common sort, who put bracelets on their [g]wrists and beautiful crowns on their heads. 43 Then I said concerning her who had grown old in adulteries, ‘Will they commit harlotry with her now, and she with them? 44 Yet they went in to her, as men go in to a woman who plays the harlot; thus they went in to Oholah and Oholibah, the lewd women. 45 But righteous men will (AW)judge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses, and (AX)blood is on their hands.

46 “For thus says the Lord God: (AY)‘Bring up an assembly against them, give them up to trouble and plunder. 47 (AZ)The assembly shall stone them with stones and [h]execute them with their swords; (BA)they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn their houses with fire. 48 Thus (BB)I will cause lewdness to cease from the land, (BC)that all women may be taught not to practice your lewdness. 49 They shall repay you for your lewdness, and you shall (BD)pay for your idolatrous sins. (BE)Then you shall know that I am the Lord God.’ ”

They became prostitutes in Egypt,(A) engaging in prostitution(B) from their youth.(C) In that land their breasts were fondled and their virgin bosoms caressed.(D) The older was named Oholah, and her sister was Oholibah. They were mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.(E)

“Oholah engaged in prostitution while she was still mine; and she lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians(F)—warriors(G) clothed in blue, governors and commanders, all of them handsome young men, and mounted horsemen. She gave herself as a prostitute to all the elite of the Assyrians and defiled herself with all the idols of everyone she lusted after.(H) She did not give up the prostitution she began in Egypt,(I) when during her youth men slept with her, caressed her virgin bosom and poured out their lust on her.(J)

“Therefore I delivered her into the hands(K) of her lovers,(L) the Assyrians, for whom she lusted.(M) 10 They stripped(N) her naked, took away her sons and daughters and killed her with the sword. She became a byword among women,(O) and punishment was inflicted(P) on her.(Q)

11 “Her sister Oholibah saw this,(R) yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister.(S) 12 She too lusted after the Assyrians—governors and commanders, warriors in full dress, mounted horsemen, all handsome young men.(T) 13 I saw that she too defiled herself; both of them went the same way.(U)

14 “But she carried her prostitution still further. She saw men portrayed on a wall,(V) figures of Chaldeans[a] portrayed in red,(W) 15 with belts(X) around their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like Babylonian chariot officers, natives of Chaldea.[b] 16 As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers(Y) to them in Chaldea.(Z) 17 Then the Babylonians(AA) came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her. After she had been defiled by them, she turned away from them in disgust.(AB) 18 When she carried on her prostitution openly and exposed her naked body,(AC) I turned away(AD) from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister.(AE) 19 Yet she became more and more promiscuous as she recalled the days of her youth, when she was a prostitute in Egypt. 20 There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. 21 So you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when in Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breasts fondled.[c](AF)

22 “Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stir up your lovers(AG) against you, those you turned away from in disgust, and I will bring them against you from every side(AH) 23 the Babylonians(AI) and all the Chaldeans,(AJ) the men of Pekod(AK) and Shoa and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them, handsome young men, all of them governors and commanders, chariot officers and men of high rank, all mounted on horses.(AL) 24 They will come against you with weapons,[d] chariots and wagons(AM) and with a throng of people; they will take up positions against you on every side with large and small shields and with helmets. I will turn you over to them for punishment,(AN) and they will punish you according to their standards. 25 I will direct my jealous anger(AO) against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and your ears, and those of you who are left will fall by the sword. They will take away your sons and daughters,(AP) and those of you who are left will be consumed by fire.(AQ) 26 They will also strip(AR) you of your clothes and take your fine jewelry.(AS) 27 So I will put a stop(AT) to the lewdness and prostitution you began in Egypt. You will not look on these things with longing or remember Egypt anymore.

28 “For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to deliver you into the hands(AU) of those you hate, to those you turned away from in disgust. 29 They will deal with you in hatred and take away everything you have worked for. They will leave you stark naked,(AV) and the shame of your prostitution will be exposed.(AW) Your lewdness(AX) and promiscuity(AY) 30 have brought this on you, because you lusted after the nations and defiled yourself with their idols.(AZ) 31 You have gone the way of your sister; so I will put her cup(BA) into your hand.(BB)

32 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“You will drink your sister’s cup,
    a cup large and deep;
it will bring scorn and derision,(BC)
    for it holds so much.(BD)
33 You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow,
    the cup of ruin and desolation,
    the cup of your sister Samaria.(BE)
34 You will drink it(BF) and drain it dry
    and chew on its pieces—
    and you will tear your breasts.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.(BG)

35 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you have forgotten(BH) me and turned your back on me,(BI) you must bear(BJ) the consequences of your lewdness and prostitution.”

36 The Lord said to me: “Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then confront(BK) them with their detestable practices,(BL) 37 for they have committed adultery and blood is on their hands. They committed adultery with their idols; they even sacrificed their children, whom they bore to me, as food for them.(BM) 38 They have also done this to me: At that same time they defiled my sanctuary(BN) and desecrated my Sabbaths.(BO) 39 On the very day they sacrificed their children to their idols, they entered my sanctuary and desecrated(BP) it. That is what they did in my house.(BQ)

40 “They even sent messengers for men who came from far away,(BR) and when they arrived you bathed yourself for them, applied eye makeup(BS) and put on your jewelry.(BT) 41 You sat on an elegant couch,(BU) with a table(BV) spread before it on which you had placed the incense(BW) and olive oil that belonged to me.(BX)

42 “The noise of a carefree(BY) crowd was around her; drunkards(BZ) were brought from the desert along with men from the rabble, and they put bracelets(CA) on the wrists of the woman and her sister and beautiful crowns on their heads.(CB) 43 Then I said about the one worn out by adultery, ‘Now let them use her as a prostitute,(CC) for that is all she is.’ 44 And they slept with her. As men sleep with a prostitute, so they slept with those lewd women, Oholah and Oholibah. 45 But righteous judges will sentence them to the punishment of women who commit adultery and shed blood,(CD) because they are adulterous and blood is on their hands.(CE)

46 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Bring a mob(CF) against them and give them over to terror and plunder.(CG) 47 The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords; they will kill their sons and daughters(CH) and burn(CI) down their houses.(CJ)

48 “So I will put an end(CK) to lewdness in the land, that all women may take warning and not imitate you.(CL) 49 You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry.(CM) Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.(CN)

Jerusalem’s Harlotry

15 (A)“But you trusted in your own beauty, (B)played the harlot because of your fame, and poured out your harlotry on everyone passing by who would have it. 16 (C)You took some of your garments and adorned multicolored [a]high places for yourself, and played the harlot on them. Such things should not happen, nor be. 17 You have also taken your beautiful jewelry from My gold and My silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself male images and played the harlot with them. 18 You took your embroidered garments and covered them, and you set My oil and My incense before them. 19 Also (D)My food which I gave you—the pastry of fine flour, oil, and honey which I fed you—you set it before them as [b]sweet incense; and so it was,” says the Lord God.

20 (E)“Moreover you took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to Me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your acts of harlotry a small matter, 21 that you have slain My children and offered them up to them by causing them to pass through the (F)fire? 22 And in all your abominations and acts of harlotry you did not remember the days of your (G)youth, (H)when you were naked and bare, struggling in your blood.

23 “Then it was so, after all your wickedness—‘Woe, woe to you!’ says the Lord God 24 that (I)you also built for yourself a shrine, and (J)made a [c]high place for yourself in every street. 25 You built your high places (K)at the head of every road, and made your beauty to be abhorred. You offered yourself to everyone who passed by, and multiplied your acts of harlotry. 26 You also committed harlotry with (L)the Egyptians, your very fleshly neighbors, and increased your acts of harlotry to (M)provoke Me to anger.

27 “Behold, therefore, I stretched out My hand against you, diminished your [d]allotment, and gave you up to the will of those who hate you, (N)the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd behavior. 28 You also played the harlot with the (O)Assyrians, because you were insatiable; indeed you played the harlot with them and still were not satisfied. 29 Moreover you multiplied your acts of harlotry as far as the land of the trader, (P)Chaldea; and even then you were not satisfied.

30 “How degenerate is your heart!” says the Lord God, “seeing you do all these things, the deeds of a brazen harlot.

Jerusalem’s Adultery

31 (Q)“You erected your shrine at the head of every road, and built your [e]high place in every street. Yet you were not like a harlot, because you scorned (R)payment. 32 You are an adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband. 33 Men make payment to all harlots, but (S)you made your payments to all your lovers, and [f]hired them to come to you from all around for your harlotry. 34 You are the opposite of other women in your harlotry, because no one solicited you to be a harlot. In that you gave payment but no payment was given you, therefore you are the opposite.”

Jerusalem’s Lovers Will Abuse Her

35 ‘Now then, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord! 36 Thus says the Lord God: “Because your filthiness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your harlotry with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of (T)the blood of your children which you gave to them, 37 surely, therefore, (U)I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved, and all those you hated; I will gather them from all around against you and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness. 38 And I will judge you as (V)women who break wedlock or (W)shed blood are judged; I will bring blood upon you in fury and jealousy. 39 I will also give you into their hand, and they shall throw down your shrines and break down (X)your [g]high places. (Y)They shall also strip you of your clothes, take your beautiful jewelry, and leave you naked and bare.

40 (Z)“They shall also bring up an assembly against you, (AA)and they shall stone you with stones and thrust you through with their swords. 41 They shall (AB)burn your houses with fire, and (AC)execute judgments on you in the sight of many women; and I will make you (AD)cease playing the harlot, and you shall no longer hire lovers. 42 So (AE)I will lay to rest My fury toward you, and My jealousy shall depart from you. I will be quiet, and be angry no more. 43 Because (AF)you did not remember the days of your youth, but [h]agitated Me with all these things, surely (AG)I will also recompense your [i]deeds on your own head,” says the Lord God. “And you shall not commit lewdness in addition to all your abominations.

More Wicked than Samaria and Sodom

44 “Indeed everyone who quotes proverbs will use this proverb against you: ‘Like mother, like daughter!’ 45 You are your mother’s daughter, [j]loathing husband and children; and you are the (AH)sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children; (AI)your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

46 “Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells with her daughters to the north of you; and (AJ)your younger sister, who dwells to the south of you, is Sodom and her daughters. 47 You did not walk in their ways nor act according to their abominations; but, as if that were too little, (AK)you became more corrupt than they in all your ways.

48 As I live,” says the Lord God, “neither (AL)your sister Sodom nor her daughters have done as you and your daughters have done. 49 Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, (AM)fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And they were haughty and (AN)committed abomination before Me; therefore (AO)I took them away as [k]I saw fit.

51 “Samaria did not commit (AP)half of your sins; but you have multiplied your abominations more than they, and (AQ)have justified your sisters by all the abominations which you have done. 52 You who judged your sisters, bear your own shame also, because the sins which you committed were more abominable than theirs; they are more righteous than you. Yes, be disgraced also, and bear your own shame, because you justified your sisters.

53 (AR)“When I bring back their captives, the captives of Sodom and her daughters, and the captives of Samaria and her daughters, then I will also bring back (AS)the captives of your captivity among them, 54 that you may bear your own shame and be disgraced by all that you did when (AT)you comforted them. 55 When your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters return to their former state, then you and your daughters will return to your former state. 56 For your sister Sodom was not a byword in your mouth in the days of your pride, 57 before your wickedness was uncovered. It was like the time of the (AU)reproach of the daughters of [l]Syria and all those around her, and of (AV)the daughters of the Philistines, who despise you everywhere. 58 (AW)You have paid for your lewdness and your abominations,” says the Lord. 59 For thus says the Lord God: “I will deal with you as you have done, who (AX)despised (AY)the oath by breaking the covenant.

An Everlasting Covenant

60 “Nevertheless I will (AZ)remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish (BA)an everlasting covenant with you. 61 Then (BB)you will remember your ways and be ashamed, when you receive your older and your younger sisters; for I will give them to you for (BC)daughters, (BD)but not because of My covenant with you. 62 (BE)And I will establish My covenant with you. Then you shall know that I am the Lord, 63 that you may (BF)remember and be ashamed, (BG)and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame, when I provide you an atonement for all you have done,” says the Lord God.’ ”

15 “‘But you trusted in your beauty and used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by(A) and your beauty became his.(B) 16 You took some of your garments to make gaudy high places,(C) where you carried on your prostitution.(D) You went to him, and he possessed your beauty.[a] 17 You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them.(E) 18 And you took your embroidered clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil and incense(F) before them. 19 Also the food I provided for you—the flour, olive oil and honey I gave you to eat—you offered as fragrant incense before them. That is what happened, declares the Sovereign Lord.(G)

20 “‘And you took your sons and daughters(H) whom you bore to me(I) and sacrificed them as food to the idols. Was your prostitution not enough?(J) 21 You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols.(K) 22 In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth,(L) when you were naked and bare,(M) kicking about in your blood.(N)

23 “‘Woe!(O) Woe to you, declares the Sovereign Lord. In addition to all your other wickedness, 24 you built a mound for yourself and made a lofty shrine(P) in every public square.(Q) 25 At every street corner(R) you built your lofty shrines and degraded your beauty, spreading your legs with increasing promiscuity to anyone who passed by.(S) 26 You engaged in prostitution(T) with the Egyptians,(U) your neighbors with large genitals, and aroused my anger(V) with your increasing promiscuity.(W) 27 So I stretched out my hand(X) against you and reduced your territory; I gave you over(Y) to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines,(Z) who were shocked by your lewd conduct. 28 You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians(AA) too, because you were insatiable; and even after that, you still were not satisfied.(AB) 29 Then you increased your promiscuity to include Babylonia,[b](AC) a land of merchants, but even with this you were not satisfied.(AD)

30 “‘I am filled with fury against you,[c] declares the Sovereign Lord, when you do all these things, acting like a brazen prostitute!(AE) 31 When you built your mounds at every street corner and made your lofty shrines(AF) in every public square, you were unlike a prostitute, because you scorned payment.

32 “‘You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband! 33 All prostitutes receive gifts,(AG) but you give gifts(AH) to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from everywhere for your illicit favors.(AI) 34 So in your prostitution you are the opposite of others; no one runs after you for your favors. You are the very opposite, for you give payment and none is given to you.

35 “‘Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord! 36 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you poured out your lust and exposed your naked body in your promiscuity with your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because you gave them your children’s blood,(AJ) 37 therefore I am going to gather all your lovers, with whom you found pleasure, those you loved as well as those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around and will strip(AK) you in front of them, and they will see you stark naked.(AL) 38 I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit adultery and who shed blood;(AM) I will bring on you the blood vengeance of my wrath and jealous anger.(AN) 39 Then I will deliver you into the hands(AO) of your lovers, and they will tear down your mounds and destroy your lofty shrines. They will strip you of your clothes and take your fine jewelry and leave you stark naked.(AP) 40 They will bring a mob against you, who will stone(AQ) you and hack you to pieces with their swords. 41 They will burn down(AR) your houses and inflict punishment on you in the sight of many women.(AS) I will put a stop(AT) to your prostitution, and you will no longer pay your lovers. 42 Then my wrath against you will subside and my jealous anger will turn away from you; I will be calm and no longer angry.(AU)

43 “‘Because you did not remember(AV) the days of your youth but enraged me with all these things, I will surely bring down(AW) on your head what you have done, declares the Sovereign Lord. Did you not add lewdness to all your other detestable practices?(AX)

44 “‘Everyone who quotes proverbs(AY) will quote this proverb about you: “Like mother, like daughter.” 45 You are a true daughter of your mother, who despised(AZ) her husband(BA) and her children; and you are a true sister of your sisters, who despised their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.(BB) 46 Your older sister(BC) was Samaria, who lived to the north of you with her daughters; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you with her daughters, was Sodom.(BD) 47 You not only followed their ways and copied their detestable practices, but in all your ways you soon became more depraved than they.(BE) 48 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign(BF) Lord, your sister Sodom(BG) and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done.(BH)

49 “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom:(BI) She and her daughters were arrogant,(BJ) overfed and unconcerned;(BK) they did not help the poor and needy.(BL) 50 They were haughty(BM) and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.(BN) 51 Samaria did not commit half the sins you did. You have done more detestable things than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous by all these things you have done.(BO) 52 Bear your disgrace, for you have furnished some justification for your sisters. Because your sins were more vile than theirs, they appear more righteous(BP) than you. So then, be ashamed and bear(BQ) your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.

53 “‘However, I will restore(BR) the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and of Samaria and her daughters, and your fortunes along with them,(BS) 54 so that you may bear your disgrace(BT) and be ashamed of all you have done in giving them comfort. 55 And your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to what they were before; and you and your daughters will return to what you were before.(BU) 56 You would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of your pride, 57 before your wickedness was uncovered. Even so, you are now scorned(BV) by the daughters of Edom[d](BW) and all her neighbors and the daughters of the Philistines—all those around you who despise you. 58 You will bear the consequences of your lewdness and your detestable practices, declares the Lord.(BX)

59 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will deal with you as you deserve, because you have despised my oath by breaking the covenant.(BY) 60 Yet I will remember the covenant(BZ) I made with you in the days of your youth,(CA) and I will establish an everlasting covenant(CB) with you. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed(CC) when you receive your sisters, both those who are older than you and those who are younger. I will give them to you as daughters,(CD) but not on the basis of my covenant with you. 62 So I will establish my covenant(CE) with you, and you will know that I am the Lord.(CF) 63 Then, when I make atonement(CG) for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed(CH) and never again open your mouth(CI) because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign Lord.(CJ)’”

A Call to Repentance

The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: “Have you seen what (A)backsliding Israel has done? She has (B)gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there played the harlot. (C)And I said, after she had done all these things, ‘Return to Me.’ But she did not return. And her treacherous (D)sister Judah saw it. Then I saw that (E)for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had (F)put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; (G)yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also. So it came to pass, through her casual harlotry, that she (H)defiled the land and committed adultery with (I)stones and trees.

Unfaithful Israel

During the reign of King Josiah,(A) the Lord said to me, “Have you seen what faithless(B) Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree(C) and has committed adultery(D) there. I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister(E) Judah saw it.(F) I gave faithless Israel(G) her certificate of divorce(H) and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear;(I) she also went out and committed adultery. Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land(J) and committed adultery(K) with stone(L) and wood.(M)
