⁶ And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, ^(A)who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ⁷ Now ^(B)when Phinehas ^(C)the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; ⁸ and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So ^(D)the plague was ^(E)stopped among the children of Israel.

^12 (A)Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because ^(B)they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.

¹⁴ Now the name of the Israelite who was killed, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites. ¹⁵ And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of ^(A)Zur; he was head of the people of a father’s house in Midian.

¹² And he said to them, ^(A)“Pick me up and ^[a]throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”

¹³ Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, ^(B)but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them. ¹⁴ Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said, “We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and ^(C)do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, ^(D)have done as it pleased You.” ¹⁵ So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, ^(E)and the sea ceased from its raging.
