Let my prayer come before you;
    (A)incline your ear to my cry!

For my soul is full of troubles,
    and (B)my life draws near to (C)Sheol.
I am counted among those who (D)go down to the pit;
    I am a man who has no strength,
like one set loose among the dead,
    like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom (E)you remember no more,
    for they are (F)cut off from your hand.
You have put me in (G)the depths of the pit,
    in the (H)regions dark and (I)deep.
Your wrath (J)lies heavy upon me,
    and you overwhelm me with (K)all your waves. Selah

You have caused (L)my companions to shun me;
    you have made me (M)a horror[a] to them.
I am (N)shut in so that I cannot escape;
    (O)my eye grows dim through sorrow.
Every day I call upon you, O Lord;
    I (P)spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you work wonders for the dead?
    (Q)Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
11 Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
    or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
12 Are your (R)wonders known in (S)the darkness,
    or your righteousness in the land of (T)forgetfulness?

13 But I, O Lord, cry (U)to you;
    (V)in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 O Lord, why (W)do you cast my soul away?
    Why (X)do you hide your face from me?
15 Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,
    I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.[b]
16 Your wrath has swept over me;
    your (Y)dreadful assaults destroy me.
17 They (Z)surround me like a flood (AA)all day long;
    they (AB)close in on me together.
18 You have caused (AC)my beloved and my friend to shun me;
    my companions have become darkness.[c]

So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest (A)prayer for him was made to God by the church.

Peter Is Rescued

Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, (B)bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. And behold, (C)an angel of the Lord (D)stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. (E)He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And (F)the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and (G)put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but (H)thought he was seeing a vision. 10 When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. (I)It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. 11 When Peter (J)came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that (K)the Lord has sent his angel and (L)rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of (M)John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and (N)were praying. 13 And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, (O)a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 Recognizing Peter's voice, (P)in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is (Q)his angel!” 16 But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. 17 But (R)motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to (S)James and to (T)the brothers.”[a] Then he departed and went to another place.

18 Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. 19 And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and (U)ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there.

The Death of Herod

20 Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and (V)having persuaded Blastus, the king's chamberlain,[b] they asked for peace, because (W)their country depended on the king's country for food. 21 On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. 22 And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” 23 Immediately (X)an angel of the Lord struck him down, because (Y)he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

24 But (Z)the word of God increased and multiplied.

25 (AA)And Barnabas and Saul returned from[c] Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them (AB)John, whose other name was Mark.

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.(A)

The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains,(B) and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel(C) of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.(D)

Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.(E) 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself,(F) and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.

11 Then Peter came to himself(G) and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me(H) from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”

12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark,(I) where many people had gathered and were praying.(J) 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.(K) 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed(L) she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”

15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”(M)

16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand(N) for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James(O) and the other brothers and sisters(P) about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.

18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.(Q)

Herod’s Death

Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea(R) and stayed there. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon;(S) they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.(T)

21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel(U) of the Lord struck him down,(V) and he was eaten by worms and died.

24 But the word of God(W) continued to spread and flourish.(X)
