Proverbs 1:20-33

New International Version

Wisdom’s Rebuke

²⁰Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,^(A)
she raises her voice in the public square;
²¹on top of the wall^[a] she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:

²²“How long will you who are simple^(B) love your simple ways?
    How long will mockers delight in mockery
    and fools hate^(C) knowledge?
²³Repent at my rebuke!
    Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
    I will make known to you my teachings.
²⁴But since you refuse^(D) to listen when I call^(E)
    and no one pays attention^(F) when I stretch out my hand,
²⁵since you disregard all my advice
    and do not accept my rebuke,
²⁶I in turn will laugh^(G) when disaster^(H) strikes you;
    I will mock^(I) when calamity overtakes you^(J)—
²⁷when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
    when disaster^(K) sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
    when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

²⁸“Then they will call to me but I will not answer;^(L)
    they will look for me but will not find me,^(M)
²⁹since they hated knowledge
    and did not choose to fear the Lord.^(N)
³⁰Since they would not accept my advice
    and spurned my rebuke,^(O)
³¹they will eat the fruit of their ways
    and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.^(P)
³²For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
    and the complacency of fools will destroy them;^(Q)
³³but whoever listens to me will live in safety^(R)
    and be at ease, without fear of harm.”^(S)

³²The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

³³Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,^(A) and then I am going to the one who sent me.^(B) ³⁴You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”^(C)

³⁵The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered^(D) among the Greeks,^(E) and teach the Greeks? ³⁶What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”^(F)

³⁷On the last and greatest day of the festival,^(G) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.^(H) ³⁸Whoever believes^(I) in me, as Scripture has said,^(J) rivers of living water^(K) will flow from within them.”^[a]^(L) ³⁹By this he meant the Spirit,^(M) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.^(N) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.^(O)

The Day of the Lord

5 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates^(A) we do not need to write to you,^(B) ²for you know very well that the day of the Lord^(C) will come like a thief in the night.^(D) ³While people are saying, “Peace and safety,”^(E) destruction will come on them suddenly,^(F) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.^(G)

⁴But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness^(H) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.^(I) ⁵You are all children of the light^(J) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. ⁶So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,^(K) but let us be awake^(L) and sober.^(M) ⁷For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.^(N) ⁸But since we belong to the day,^(O) let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,^(P) and the hope of salvation^(Q) as a helmet.^(R) ⁹For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath^(S) but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.^(T) ¹⁰He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.^(U) ¹¹Therefore encourage one another^(V) and build each other up,^(W) just as in fact you are doing.
