7 My son, obey my words,
and treasure my commands.(A)
2 Keep my commands and live,(B)
and guard my instructions
as you would the pupil of your eye.(C)
3 Tie them to your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.(D)
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”(E)
and call understanding your relative.
5 She will keep you from a forbidden woman,
a wayward woman with her flattering talk.(F)
A Story of Seduction
6 At the window of my house
I looked through my lattice.(G)
7 I saw among the inexperienced,[a]
I noticed among the youths,
a young man lacking sense.
8 Crossing the street near her corner,
he strolled down the road to her house
9 at twilight, in the evening,
in the dark of the night.(H)
10 A woman came to meet him
dressed like a prostitute,(I)
having a hidden agenda.[b]
11 She is loud and defiant;(J)
her feet do not stay at home.(K)
12 Now in the street, now in the squares,(L)
she lurks at every corner.(M)
13 She grabs him and kisses him;
she brazenly says[c] to him,
14 “I’ve made fellowship offerings;
today I’ve fulfilled my vows.(N)
15 So I came out to meet you,
to search for you, and I’ve found you.
16 I’ve spread coverings on my bed(O)—
richly colored linen from Egypt.(P)
17 I’ve perfumed my bed
with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.(Q)
18 Come, let’s drink deeply of lovemaking until morning.(R)
Let’s feast on each other’s love!
19 My husband isn’t home;
he went on a long journey.
20 He took a bag of silver with him
and will come home at the time of the full moon.”
21 She seduces him with her persistent pleading;
she lures with her flattering talk.
22 He follows her impulsively
like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer bounding toward a trap[d]
23 until an arrow pierces its[e] liver,(S)
like a bird darting into a snare(T)—
he doesn’t know it will cost him his life.

7 Mon fils, retiens mes paroles
et garde mes commandements avec toi!
2 Retiens mes commandements et tu vivras.
Garde mon enseignement comme la prunelle de tes yeux!
3 Attache-les sur tes doigts,
écris-les sur la table de ton cœur!
4 Dis à la sagesse: «Tu es ma sœur»
et appelle l'intelligence ton amie
5 pour qu'elles te préservent de la femme étrangère,
de l'inconnue au discours flatteur.
6 Alors que j'étais à la fenêtre de ma maison
et que je regardais à travers mon treillis,
7 j'ai vu parmi ceux qui manquent d’expérience,
j'ai remarqué parmi les jeunes gens, un garçon dépourvu de bon sens.
8 Il passait dans la rue, près de l'angle où se tenait une de ces femmes,
et il prenait le chemin de sa maison;
9 c'était au crépuscule, en fin de journée,
au moment où viennent la nuit et l'obscurité.
10 La femme est venue à sa rencontre,
habillée comme une prostituée, la ruse dans le cœur.
11 Elle était bruyante et sans pudeur.
Ses pieds ne tenaient pas en place chez elle:
12 tantôt dans la rue, tantôt sur les places,
à tous les carrefours elle était aux aguets.
13 Elle l'a agrippé et embrassé
et, d'un air effronté, lui a dit:
14 «Je devais un sacrifice de communion,
aujourd'hui j'ai accompli mes vœux.
15 Voilà pourquoi je suis sortie à ta rencontre
pour te chercher, et je t'ai trouvé.
16 J'ai orné mon divan de couvertures,
de tissus en lin d'Egypte.
17 J'ai parfumé mon lit
de myrrhe, d'aloès et de cinnamome.
18 Viens, enivrons-nous d'amour jusqu'au matin,
livrons-nous aux jouissances de la passion!
19 En effet, mon mari n'est pas à la maison,
il est parti pour un voyage lointain;
20 il a pris la bourse avec lui,
il ne reviendra à la maison qu'à la pleine lune.»
21 Elle l'a attiré à force de persuasion,
elle l'a séduit par la flatterie de ses lèvres.
22 Il s'est tout à coup mis à la suivre,
pareil au bœuf qui va à la boucherie,
au fou qu'on attache pour le corriger,
23 jusqu'à ce qu'une flèche lui transperce le foie.
Il était pareil à l'oiseau qui se précipite dans un piège
sans savoir que c'est au prix de sa vie.
24 Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi
et soyez attentifs aux paroles de ma bouche!
25 Que ton cœur ne se tourne pas vers les voies d'une telle femme!
Ne t'égare pas dans ses sentiers!
26 En effet, elle a fait beaucoup de victimes.
Ils sont nombreux, tous ceux qu'elle a détruits.
27 Sa maison, c'est le chemin du séjour des morts
qui descend vers les chambres de la mort.

Warning Against the Adulterous Woman
7 My son,(A) keep my words
and store up my commands within you.
2 Keep my commands and you will live;(B)
guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.(C)
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and to insight, “You are my relative.”
5 They will keep you from the adulterous woman,
from the wayward woman with her seductive words.(D)
6 At the window of my house
I looked down through the lattice.
7 I saw among the simple,
I noticed among the young men,
a youth who had no sense.(E)
8 He was going down the street near her corner,
walking along in the direction of her house
9 at twilight,(F) as the day was fading,
as the dark of night set in.
10 Then out came a woman to meet him,
dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11 (She is unruly(G) and defiant,
her feet never stay at home;
12 now in the street, now in the squares,
at every corner she lurks.)(H)
13 She took hold of him(I) and kissed him
and with a brazen face she said:(J)
14 “Today I fulfilled my vows,
and I have food from my fellowship offering(K) at home.
15 So I came out to meet you;
I looked for you and have found you!
16 I have covered my bed
with colored linens from Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed(L)
with myrrh,(M) aloes and cinnamon.
18 Come, let’s drink deeply of love till morning;
let’s enjoy ourselves with love!(N)
19 My husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey.
20 He took his purse filled with money
and will not be home till full moon.”
21 With persuasive words she led him astray;
she seduced him with her smooth talk.(O)
22 All at once he followed her
like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer[a] stepping into a noose[b](P)
23 till an arrow pierces(Q) his liver,
like a bird darting into a snare,
little knowing it will cost him his life.(R)
