7 My son, obey my words,
and treasure my commands.(A)
2 Keep my commands and live,(B)
and guard my instructions
as you would the pupil of your eye.(C)
3 Tie them to your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.(D)
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”(E)
and call understanding your relative.
5 She will keep you from a forbidden woman,
a wayward woman with her flattering talk.(F)
A Story of Seduction
6 At the window of my house
I looked through my lattice.(G)
7 I saw among the inexperienced,[a]
I noticed among the youths,
a young man lacking sense.
8 Crossing the street near her corner,
he strolled down the road to her house
9 at twilight, in the evening,
in the dark of the night.(H)
10 A woman came to meet him
dressed like a prostitute,(I)
having a hidden agenda.[b]
11 She is loud and defiant;(J)
her feet do not stay at home.(K)
12 Now in the street, now in the squares,(L)
she lurks at every corner.(M)
13 She grabs him and kisses him;
she brazenly says[c] to him,
14 “I’ve made fellowship offerings;
today I’ve fulfilled my vows.(N)
15 So I came out to meet you,
to search for you, and I’ve found you.
16 I’ve spread coverings on my bed(O)—
richly colored linen from Egypt.(P)
17 I’ve perfumed my bed
with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.(Q)
18 Come, let’s drink deeply of lovemaking until morning.(R)
Let’s feast on each other’s love!
19 My husband isn’t home;
he went on a long journey.
20 He took a bag of silver with him
and will come home at the time of the full moon.”
21 She seduces him with her persistent pleading;
she lures with her flattering talk.
22 He follows her impulsively
like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer bounding toward a trap[d]
23 until an arrow pierces its[e] liver,(S)
like a bird darting into a snare(T)—
he doesn’t know it will cost him his life.

Waarschuwing tegen de vrouw van een ander (vervolg)
7 Mijn zoon, bewaar mijn woorden.
Berg wat ik je zeg goed op in je hart.
2 Onthoud mijn lessen, dan zul je leven.
Beschouw ze als het kostbaarste wat je hebt.
3 Draag ze bij je, zoals een ring aan je vinger.
Schrijf ze op in je hart.
4 Houd van de wijsheid alsof ze je zus is.
Laat verstandigheid je beste vriend zijn.
5 Dat zal je beschermen voor de vrouw van een ander,
al heeft ze nog zulke gladde praatjes.
6 Ik stond op een keer bij het raam van mijn huis,
en keek naar buiten.
7 Daar liep een aantal jongemannen.
Ik zag dat één van hen een dwaas was.
8 Hij stak de straat over, naar de hoek waar een vrouw woont.
Hij liep in de richting van haar huis.
9 Het was avond, bijna nacht,
en het was al bijna helemaal donker.
10 De vrouw kwam naar buiten, naar hem toe.
Ze had zich uitdagend gekleed, als een hoer.
11 Het is een brutale vrouw die er maar op los leeft.
Ze blijft nooit thuis.
12 Altijd is ze op straat te vinden.
Ze hangt rond op de pleinen.
Op de straathoeken loert ze op mannen.
13 Ze kwam dus naar buiten, greep hem beet en kuste hem.
Met een brutaal gezicht zei ze:
14 'Ik wilde net een dank-offer gaan brengen.
Vandaag ga ik de offers brengen die ik had beloofd.
15 Daarom ben ik je tegemoet gelopen.
Ik ging je zoeken en nu heb ik je gevonden.
16 Ik heb prachtig geborduurde dekens op mijn bed gelegd,
gemaakt van Egyptisch linnen.
17 Ik heb mijn bed besprenkeld met parfum.
18 Kom mee naar mijn bed, dan gaan we samen plezier maken.
We kunnen tot morgenochtend van elkaar genieten.
19 Want mijn man is niet thuis.
Hij is ver weg, op reis.
20 Hij heeft veel geld meegenomen,
en komt pas volgende maand terug.'
21 Ze haalde hem over met haar gepraat.
Met vleiende woorden praatte zij hem om.
22 Hij gaf toe en liep met haar mee,
als een koe die naar de slachter gaat,
als een dwaas die geboeid meeloopt om zijn straf te krijgen,
23 als een vogel die het vangnet in vliegt.
Hij beseft niet dat zijn leven gevaar loopt,
totdat hij dodelijk getroffen wordt door de pijl.
24 Mijn zonen, luister dus naar mij.
Onthoud wat ik jullie zeg.
25 Laat je niet door zo'n vrouw verleiden.
Ga niet naar haar toe.
26 Ze heeft al heel veel slachtoffers gemaakt,
heel veel mannen de dood ingejaagd.
27 Haar huis is een poort naar de dood.
Als je daar doorheen gaat, is er geen weg terug.

2 Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
3 Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.
4 Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:
5 That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
6 For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,
7 And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
8 Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
9 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
20 He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.
21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
24 Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
25 Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
26 For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

Warning Against the Adulterous Woman
7 My son,(A) keep my words
and store up my commands within you.
2 Keep my commands and you will live;(B)
guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.(C)
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and to insight, “You are my relative.”
5 They will keep you from the adulterous woman,
from the wayward woman with her seductive words.(D)
6 At the window of my house
I looked down through the lattice.
7 I saw among the simple,
I noticed among the young men,
a youth who had no sense.(E)
8 He was going down the street near her corner,
walking along in the direction of her house
9 at twilight,(F) as the day was fading,
as the dark of night set in.
10 Then out came a woman to meet him,
dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11 (She is unruly(G) and defiant,
her feet never stay at home;
12 now in the street, now in the squares,
at every corner she lurks.)(H)
13 She took hold of him(I) and kissed him
and with a brazen face she said:(J)
14 “Today I fulfilled my vows,
and I have food from my fellowship offering(K) at home.
15 So I came out to meet you;
I looked for you and have found you!
16 I have covered my bed
with colored linens from Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed(L)
with myrrh,(M) aloes and cinnamon.
18 Come, let’s drink deeply of love till morning;
let’s enjoy ourselves with love!(N)
19 My husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey.
20 He took his purse filled with money
and will not be home till full moon.”
21 With persuasive words she led him astray;
she seduced him with her smooth talk.(O)
22 All at once he followed her
like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer[a] stepping into a noose[b](P)
23 till an arrow pierces(Q) his liver,
like a bird darting into a snare,
little knowing it will cost him his life.(R)
