6 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, thou hast engaged fast thy hand to a stranger.
2 Thou art ensnared with the words of thy mouth, and caught with thy own words.
3 Do therefore, my son, what I say, and deliver thyself: because thou art fallen into the hand of thy neighbour. Run about, make haste, stir up thy friend:
4 Give not sleep to thy eyes, neither let thy eyelids slumber.
5 Deliver thyself as a doe from the hand, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Go to the ant, O sluggard, and consider her ways, and learn wisdom:
7 Which, although she hath no guide, nor master, nor captain,
8 Provideth her meat for herself in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou rise out of thy sleep?
10 Thou wilt sleep a little, thou wilt slumber a little, thou wilt fold thy hands a little to sleep:
11 And want shall come upon thee, as a traveller, and poverty as a man armed. But if thou be diligent, thy harvest shall come as a fountain, and want shall flee far from thee.
12 A man that is an apostate, an unprofitable man, walketh with a perverse mouth,
13 He winketh with the eyes, presseth with the foot, speaketh with the finger.
14 With a wicked heart he deviseth evil, and at all times he soweth discord.
15 To such a one his destruction shall presently come, and he shall suddenly be destroyed, and shall no longer have any remedy.
16 Six things there are, which the Lord hateth, and the seventh his soul detesteth:
17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief,
19 A deceitful witness that uttereth lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren.
20 My son, keep the commandments of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.
21 Bind them in thy heart continually, and put them about thy neck.
22 When thou walkest, let them go with thee: when thou sleepest, let them keep thee; and when thou awakest, talk with them.
23 Because the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 That they may keep thee from the evil woman, and from the flattering tongue of the stranger.
25 Let not thy heart covet her beauty, be not caught with her winks:
26 For the price of a harlot is scarce one loaf: but the woman catcheth the precious soul of a man.
27 Can a man hide fire in his bosom, and his garments not burn?
28 Or can he walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be burnt?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife, shall not be clean when he shall touch her.
30 The fault is not so great when a man hath stolen: for he stealeth to fill his hungry soul:
31 And if he be taken he shall restore sevenfold, and shall give up all the substance of his house.
32 But he that is an adulterer, for the folly of his heart shall destroy his own soul:
33 He gathereth to himself shame and dishonour, and his reproach shall not be blotted out:
34 Because the jealousy and rage of the husband will not spare in the day of revenge,
35 Nor will he yield to any man's prayers, nor will he accept for satisfaction ever so many gifts.

Warnings Against Folly
6 My son,(A) if you have put up security(B) for your neighbor,(C)
if you have shaken hands in pledge(D) for a stranger,
2 you have been trapped by what you said,
ensnared by the words of your mouth.
3 So do this, my son, to free yourself,
since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands:
Go—to the point of exhaustion—[a]
and give your neighbor no rest!
4 Allow no sleep to your eyes,
no slumber to your eyelids.(E)
5 Free yourself, like a gazelle(F) from the hand of the hunter,(G)
like a bird from the snare of the fowler.(H)
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;(I)
consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer(J)
and gathers its food at harvest.(K)
9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?(L)
When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest(M)—
11 and poverty(N) will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.
12 A troublemaker and a villain,
who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13 who winks maliciously with his eye,(O)
signals with his feet
and motions with his fingers,(P)
14 who plots evil(Q) with deceit in his heart—
he always stirs up conflict.(R)
15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;(S)
he will suddenly(T) be destroyed—without remedy.(U)
16 There are six things the Lord hates,(V)
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,(W)
a lying tongue,(X)
hands that shed innocent blood,(Y)
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,(Z)
19 a false witness(AA) who pours out lies(AB)
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.(AC)
Warning Against Adultery
20 My son,(AD) keep your father’s command
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.(AE)
21 Bind them always on your heart;
fasten them around your neck.(AF)
22 When you walk, they will guide you;
when you sleep, they will watch over you;
when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For this command is a lamp,
this teaching is a light,(AG)
and correction and instruction
are the way to life,(AH)
24 keeping you from your neighbor’s wife,
from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.(AI)
25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty
or let her captivate you with her eyes.
26 For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread,
but another man’s wife preys on your very life.(AJ)
27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap
without his clothes being burned?
28 Can a man walk on hot coals
without his feet being scorched?
29 So is he who sleeps(AK) with another man’s wife;(AL)
no one who touches her will go unpunished.
30 People do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,(AM)
though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
32 But a man who commits adultery(AN) has no sense;(AO)
whoever does so destroys himself.
33 Blows and disgrace are his lot,
and his shame will never(AP) be wiped away.

Waarschuwing om niet borg te staan voor iemand anders
6 Mijn zoon, stel dat je borg bent gaan staan voor iemand anders,
en dat je hem je erewoord hebt gegeven.
2 Als je zo door je eigen woorden in de val bent gelopen,
als je gevangen bent geraakt door de beloften die je hebt gedaan,
3 dan ben je in de macht gekomen van die ander!
Mijn zoon, doe dan het volgende om je daaruit te redden.
Ga naar die man toe en smeek hem
om je niet aan je beloften te hoeven houden.
4 Gun jezelf geen rust,
ga niet naar bed,
5 maar zorg dat je aan hem ontsnapt,
zoals een hert ontsnapt aan de jager,
zoals een vogel ontsnapt aan het vangnet.
Waarschuwing tegen luiheid
6 Kijk naar de mieren, luiwammes,
kijk hoe ze leven, en leer daar iets van.
7 Want ook al hebben ze geen aanvoerder, geen leider en geen koning,
8 toch verzamelen ze in de zomer alvast hun eten voor de winter.
In de oogsttijd verzamelen ze voedsel.
9 Maar jij, luiwammes, hoelang blijf je nog liggen?
Wanneer sta je eindelijk eens op?
10 'Nog even slapen, nog even soezen,
nog even lekker liggen met de handen achter mijn hoofd' –
11 Maar daar komt de armoede al op je af, zo snel als een hardloper.
Gebrek overvalt je als een rover.
Waarschuwing tegen leugenaars
12 Mensen die alleen maar liegen en bedriegen,
zijn nietsnutten en brengen alleen maar ongeluk.
13 Ze knipogen veelbetekenend,
geven elkaar seintjes met hun voeten,
wijzen met hun vinger.
14 Ze zitten vol oneerlijke en misdadige plannen.
Ze lokken ruzies uit.
15 Daarom loopt het plotseling slecht met hen af.
In één ogenblik is er niets van hen over.
Zeven dingen die de Heer erg vindt
16 De volgende zes dingen haat de Heer,
nee, zelfs zeven vindt Hij walgelijk:
17 ogen die trots kijken, een tong die liegt,
handen die onschuldige mensen doden,
18 een hart vol kwaad,
voeten die zich naar een misdaad haasten,
19 mensen die liegen in een rechtszaak
en mensen die ruzies uitlokken tussen vrienden.
Waarschuwing tegen de vrouw van een ander
20 Mijn zoon, luister naar de goede raad van je ouders.
Doe iets met hun wijze lessen.
21 Berg ze voor altijd op in je hart.
Zorg ervoor dat je ze altijd bewaart.
22 Laat je erdoor leiden in het leven.
Laten ze je beschermen als je ligt te slapen.
Laten ze je raad geven als je wakker wordt.
23 Want ze wijzen je de weg door het leven.
Ze zijn als een lamp, als een licht.
24 Ze beschermen je tegen slechte vrouwen.
Ze beschermen je tegen hun gladde praatjes.
25 Zorg dat die vrouwen je niet verleiden door hun schoonheid,
door hun verleidende blikken.
26 Als je met de vrouw van een ander naar bed gaat,
heb je straks alleen nog maar droog brood te eten.
De vrouw van een ander kost je zelfs je leven!
27 Kun je vuur in je zak stoppen,
zonder dat je kleren in brand raken?
28 Kun je op gloeiende kolen lopen,
zonder dat je je voeten brandt?
29 Zo kun je ook niet zonder gevolgen
naar bed gaan met de vrouw van een ander.
Want je zal schuldig zijn.
30 Je mag een dief niet minachten als hij steelt omdat hij honger heeft.
31 Maar als hij betrapt wordt, moet hij zevenvoudig terugbetalen.
Het zal hem alles kosten wat hij heeft.
32 Maar als je naar bed gaat met de vrouw van een ander,
ben je een dwaas.
Want het zal slecht met je aflopen.
33 Schade en schande zullen het gevolg zijn.
Je zal voor altijd bespot worden.
34 De jaloersheid van haar man is als een vernietigend vuur.
Op de dag dat hij wraak op je komt nemen, kent hij geen genade.
35 Je kan het op geen enkele manier meer goed met hem maken.
Hij zal het je niet vergeven,
al bied je hem nog zulke grote geschenken aan. (lees verder)
